Hey guys,

I am plannig on buying a computer and came across a computer with these specs (none more are given on the website):

Dell Poweredge T300
File Server
Xeon Quad Core, 2.8 Ghz
RAM 8 Gb
HD 600 Gb (4xHD raid)
tape unit type RD1000

Q's:
1. Can I work with this machine for a couple of 100 years?
2. Do I need an extra Graphic Card for this type?

Thanks,

RedEye

1) Was the 100 part a typo or something? Certainly not :p

2) Depends what you're going to be using it for. I recently got a computer with an integrated graphics chip, I can play fallout new vegas at medium with a quad core and 4gb ram.

To conclude, if it has a PCI-e slot and a standard RAID config - go for it! If anything it'll be overkill.

Hmm, just realized Dell Poweredges are 2U rackmount, you'll need a riser card if you want to fit a graphics card in, and you'll only be able to get a single-height card in.

Thanks for the information guys! So basicaly its not really what i am searching for?

I am searching for a computer for a price less or equal to 1000 Euros. A good machine for development and gaming. What would be a good combo of ram/graphic card/ motherboard.... withing my price range?

Honestly, I would NOT use a server as a game development computer. That particular build is suited for standard web hosting and file hosting, nothing more. It's difficult finding graphics cards that are decently priced for server hardware. Unless you're planning on building a replication of the human body in high level detail, there is no need to use a server. I'm running on a basic built gaming rig and I can work with game production.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

A server is just a specific configuration of computer. The limiting factor here is the motherboard and what connectors it has. Being a server, there is no need for PCI-e and so it probably wouldn't have this connector - therefore no graphics card.

There's a difference between Workstation and Gaming graphics cards, but both are PCI-e and just because you own a server doesn't mean you are forced into running one or the other.
