I dropped my nextech mouse and now it says it's an unknown device code 43 but sometimes if placed in the right place, it will recognize and work but after moving it somewhere it won't recognize. Please help.

...

Grab it and swirl it around the room!

But before you do that, stop and think for a second what happens to electronics when you drop them.

The wire's frayed/ lose connection/ something very hardware specific i bet, so im go out on a limb and say no to being able to help you. As that would mean me buying a new mouse for you.

you could get a soldering iron and open the mouse up. Hopefully it's a really obvious connection.

[edit]

sometimes sticking electronics in the microwave for a short amount of time (like 10 seconds) helps.

You really should have included a smiley with that.

i wouldnt bet that theres anything user seviceable with a mouse. You could go ahead and open it up and check for a broken connection but im betting you not going to find anything. If it is a wire use a soldering iron (not an gun) to solder the connection back. Soldering gun create fields that can cause problems with digital electronics.

Surely that's not true? what else is solder used for other than electronics?

I don't believe it either... unless he's talking about a faulty soldering iron.

Open it up and if you can't find out what's going on buy a new mouse. You can get cheap no frills optical mice for 4 bucks.

I fixed it (kind of) by attaching a piece of tape to support a part so it could be detected. I found out the problem!

It seems what primal beans says is true! I didn't know that :\

then again I've never used a soldering gun

(gun not iron @grog)

@ Mad nightmare
@ grog

I was not refering to solder in general i was refering to the type of tool you use... there are soldering irons and soldering guns. Irons use a principal of resistance to create heat for melting solder while guns use an induction coil to create it. The induction coil can cause electric fields that can damage sensitive digital components (roms, transistors etc.) Soldering irons are the things that look like a pen with interchangeable tips while guns look like a gun with a trigger. While you can get away with using a gun with digital electronics its not recomended.

edit:

The other part you missread is electronics. I stated digital electronics (vs its counter part analog electronics... the is a difference.) Analog circuts are made up of things like ceramic capacitors, resistors, relays, induction coils (transformers etc.) that sort of thing. DIGITAL electronics are circuts that contain semiconductor type components such as integrated circuts (Roms, chips, whatever you call them.) that are more sensitive to electronic fields heat...etc.

Another issue to consider with circuits is that many of them have multiple layers and some of those wires are only attached to specific layers that we simply can't humanly do without a machine.

yeah, but luckily it's usually the visible-to-the-naked-eye stuff that breaks first.

I think the real question is, why are you using a wireless mouse?

Because it's easier to lose the mouse, drop it, and it's more prone to interference of which even small amounts can cause jittery movements. And it's heavier, and requires batteries (unless it has one of those battery packs, but then it still needs charging). Not to mention that wired mice are cheaper and more reliable.

Now tell me, what are the arguments for using a wireless mouse?

so that you can click things while sitting across the room!
and because you dont have wires.

@ PrimalBeans and Neuro Fuzzy:

Oh, that explains it. I've never used a soldering gun either only irons.

Also, both soldering guns and soldering irons can cause heat damage. If there's one thing copper wires are good at aside from conducting electricity, it's conducting heat!

Actually, it's wired! And I didn't really drop on the floor, I was holding it and the wire wasn't in the right place so I wanted to move it but I let go of my mouse and it landed upside down.
