As a hobby, my wife is a music artist and she works as an accompanist for a voice teacher. She has a nice 88-key keyboard and she records using Garage Band and the (garbage of a...) mic built into her MacBook Pro.

I'm thinking about buying her a new mic (and accessories)

However, she doesn't like Garage Band because the notation is so limited. So I started looking at software for editing. I'm looking for something with powerful notation editing (record from midi device, edit/fine tune with mouse, print sheet music that looks good), and the ability to do some basic voice tuning. I know that good software is expensive, I'm looking at eventually spending $100-$500 (depending on how much it is, I'm not going to buy it now, but I want to be looking so I can get a good feel of the market).

Anyone have any recommendations? It would be preferred if it worked on a Mac, but Windows is fine. And again: great notation and at least some basic/useful voice tuning.

(As a note: I know about audacity and I have personally used it. It doesn't do notation, so you don't need to mention it unless you know where I can find a good notation plugin for it )

Have you tried Digital Performer? I know it has support for notation and does support MIDI (I'm currently taking a class focusing on using Digital Performer for MIDI) but not sure about voice tuning.

Also, it's available for Mac (in fact it's only on Mac).

Reason doesn't have the ability to print sheet music. Maybe Ableton does?

Cubase is probably the main contender I'd feel, though I've not used Cubase for over a decade. If I remember rightly, it has full staff notation, uber midi support, and professional grade plug-ins to do everything under the sun. I believe it's what a lot of professional studios use.

If she's on a Mac then Logic Express is as good as it gets, the Pro version costs about £700, but express can be had for under £100. Reason is meant more for synth work, as opposed to a fully blown DAW.

Personally I wouldn't go for the USB mic, if you want decent sound quality then you'll want to buy a standard 1/4" mic + audio interface. Why? Because the mic-pre and ADCs on that mic are poo, getting a decent audio interface will get you much nicer ADCs with a lot less noise and a much higher bit depth + sample rate.
