Was just having one of those "sit down and think of something stupid" moments, I started thinking about the time people spent sleeping. Now consider that energy wasn't an issue, that people didn't need sleep. How would this effect the past? The future? The present? The WORLD?!?!?!
It's your call.

I'd likely have no need for coffee, and thus my name would probably still be Yodaman Jer. That's a pretty significant event in history is the day I asked BiggAdd to change my name.

it will really screw you up. On a few occasions, i had to stay up for 3-4 days straight. yeah sure i was tired and my brain didnt work but that aside, i completley lost track of time, i coundnt tell how many days i stayed up and i count tell when i did stuff and how long has it been and my whole perception of time was really screwed up. and remembering stuff i didthose 3 somethig days was really hard. i still cant remember what i did last time i did it, all i remember was riding on the subway and playing videogames and procrastinating work and then BSing it quickly, and that was like 3 or 4 days i dont remember anything else i did.

so its really not a good idea to stay up that long

I think it would be rather BOORING to stay up 24/7 for the rest of the life to be honest

Just think of all the work you could get down... 16 hour days as standard for all

A man will one day wear a tophat in glasgow on a sunny day juggeling grapes while humming the jurrasic park theme tune.

I watched a program about sleep disorders and stuff. They say there are close to developing drugs that will keep you awake, with no side affects of tiredness etc. Apparently, physically your body doesn't need to sleep. So long as you rest, it can continue to heal and do fine without sleep.

Your brain on the other hand will turn to mush and you will DIE. Sleep is important for physical recovery as you aint moving, but mostly it's for psychological recovery. While you sleep, your sub concious process all the information, sorts out your stress etc etc blah blah (hence dreams). This is why when you 'sleep on it' you wake up feeling better about things the next day.

So one day we'll be able to take drugs that keep us awake indefinitely, without symptoms of tiredness, but if we abuse them, we will go mental, put tea coseys on our heads, drool, start muttering 'Wibble' constantly, and eventually stab each other to death.

I vote for sleep.

Trust me, sleep is my friend, on the other hand it's cool to think of what would happen if people didn't even need sleep. Heh, maybe the whole world would advance in technology twice as fast (due to the extra hours of activity). Then again, it would make some strange changes too. Ideas that people/inventors found in their dreams wouldn't exist anymore, and our schedules would completely change let alone that. What would be after dinner, besides breakfast which would be around 8 hours later? And keep in mind that even beds wouldn't exist anymore, considering there would be no use for them.

The idea of unlimited energy is somewhat forced in by this idea, which gives tons more things to think about. You could drive longer on long trips, could even program faster along with longer (your attention would never wear down). Then again, going along with what Fallout said, this wouldn't go well with the human thought process. Maybe our brains would fragment like a hard drive.

we already do have drugs like that its called meth/amphetamines. They were given to soldiers during WW2 to keep them going longer and so they require less food. but whatever these new drugs they are making they sound just like meth. people use it so stay up for like a week, first 2 days they will be very focused but after 3-4 days they will just stop thinking straight. the brain is already exhausted and overheated but physically youll be ok

Same here. i imagine even if we did have unlimited energy, there would be no need for beds because there is no sleep required.
It would also be VERY boring, i think suicide rates would increase because when someone's stressed, they can go to sleep and feel better. when someone has more time to contemplate suicide, the better it sounds to them.

Sadly I only get about 4 hours of sleep a night. So many projects going all the time, mainly with websites and what not, trying to appease clients in a decent amount of time usually lands you getting little to no sleep. I keep my laptop next to my bed at night, and when I wake up I hop on and pound out a few lines of code before trying to go back to sleep.

Anyway, I think unlimited energy would be nice at first, but you still would want to sleep. Sleeping helps pass discomfort, pain, boredom, etc. Not to mention, some of your dreams can be quite interesting.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

ignoring what is actually possible, I'd love it if I never needed to sleep, but remained in full control of my senses (not drowsy).

I heard a little while back that scientists were testing out a cap that emitted electromagnetic waves. These waves affected the brain in that it went into a deeper sleep than normal, meaning that the user could have an eight hour sleep in three. However I haven't heard anything about it since, and it can't be very safe for psychological reasons by affecting the brain like that.

I don't think I'd trust anything that promised to give us the ability to NOT sleep. The long term effects would probably be a bunch of Charlie Sheen's walking around. We were designed to spend about 1/3 of our life sleeping and I enjoy a good nights rest when I can get one. Plus, not sleeping would just eventually lead to extended working days. No thanks. I think I need a nap.

he did enough rock to kill two and a half men.

I think the big thing in the media is the interviews he did. Look up charlie sheen interview on youtube. I don't want to post it here because... well I guess it's not horrible but still...

Guys, I just did the strangest thing... I took a nap!
I actually haven't taken a nap in quite a while, forgot about the grogginess (still feeling) and that time lapse thing. I'll snap out if it, though. Had some dream about Charlie Sheen going after me. (kidding)
