And boy, it freaking hurts!!
It was nothing like I was told it would be, it hurts like hell to swallow... but not because of the scars, but because I got a swollen uvula.
I'm already taking several pain killers and anti inflammatory pills, but none of them seem to work.
I knew the older you get the more painful it gets, but this is ridiculous.
I'm interested in hearing other people experiences, specially if you had the procedure done after your 20's.

Where I come from, we usually have our tonsils removed at a rather young age, like 8 to 12 years old. Yep, the longer you wait, the more painfull it gets. I remember eating a lot of ice cream, and that helped. Mmmmm, yummy!
So, why did you wait that long?

Cheers

I was not having problems with them, until 3 years ago, when I developed a chronic infection. Then it became a necessity to remove them.
After this, I'll make sure my son get a tonsillectomy at 10.

For a while in the UK it was recommended to eat toast instead. Needless to say they changed back to ice cream after a while.

For some reason I thought this thread was called "I just had a trollsillectomy" and thought it was going to be a thread about how you were now incapable of trolling on the internet.

I'm starting to feel a bit better, and I'm not bleeding anymore. It still hurts to swallow anything, but at least it's not as bad.

While I was searching the net for a home remedy, this came up quite a bit, lol.

Just been chatting to my neighbours teenage daughter and it turns out she's big into UFOs and aliens.

Which is cool because tomorrow she's getting abducted.

Ok, now the pain is getting ridiculous. Darn it, I'm on 4 different pain killers and it's like eating M&M's.
The doctor said I should increase my water intake, but Pavlovian principles are taking over; I cringe at the idea of swallowing. I may sound like a "wuss", but believe me, I can't remember having so much pain before. Not something I would wish upon my worst enemy.

I threw up quite a bit, but that was in the mid 1950's when the anesthetics were industrial-strength and they alone made you sick. The operation for kids back then was so commonplace that they actually lined up about 5 or 6 of us on a cart to wheel us into the operating room. They also routinely cut out your adenoids as long as they were in there cutting out the side tonsils. Only positive aspect I recall was that I got out of school for about a week. However, the operation did relieve me a getting tonsilitis at the drop of a hat, which I was prone to do.

When I was younger I had strep throat real bad. You just drool because it's better than trying to swallow. As bad as it was, I'd guess you're probably in more pain than I was. I don't think icecream is a good idea though, water is better. Icecream might feel better at first, but dairy products build up mucus in the throat and can cause more irritation, or so I think I've heard that somewhere.

I'm not over a 100 yet, but I am one of several forum members in their early 60's who started programming in Fortran on punch cards for mainframes.

I recall being given plenty of ice cream also when recuperating from the tonsils/adenoids removal. The risk of promoting infection wasn't considered great because you were pumped up with penicillin.

I just remembered a folk-tale downside of having them removed when you are younger: they are supposedly more likely to grow back (to an extent). In fact, my left-side regular tonsil did grow back just a bit by the time I was 18. Guess what? I got tonsilitis again in it. I got it once more at age 20. I have not had it since. In both cases it was not nearly as bad as the hell I went through when I had huge infected tonsils prior to their removal.

I thought my mouth was fairly in the clear from the threat of surgery after I had the tonsils/adenoids removed as a boy. When I was about 53 I had to have all my teeth pulled to get false choppers. No problem with that. However, I had grown what is called a palatal torus - a bone growth descending from the roof of your mouth, and that had to be surgically removed to flatten the roof of the mouth so the top false plate stays put by suction. THAT operation was worse than 5 tonsillectomies. You have to be awake so you don't choke on the blood. They cut the skin away and then go at the bone with - I am not kidding - a Dremel saw. Through bone induction, the noise is almost deafening, and the pain is substantial.

And you, my younger friends, might be growing one. It grows from puberty until your early 30's. Is the roof of your mouth flat, or does it seem to descend somewhat it the middle? If so, take care of your teeth.

yikes... thats cool to here that someone out there is enough of a kid still to hang out with the kids lol. That sound opperation sound terrible... im going to go brush... right now. I do mybest to make sure my teeth are all alright and i quit smoking so that should help. Thats cool though that you used to do fortran though that means (if you stuck with it) you have been programming since long before most of us were born... thats crazy.

I'm getting close to 30 and now you got me constantly touching my tongue to the roof of my mouth in paranoia.
