No, no i really kid you not.

The term “next-gen” has a tendency to be thrown around quite a bit and in a way it has lost a lot of its meaning in recent times. Until now.

Epic Games have been pushing the envelope with their Unreal Engine 3 technology with each passing month. Just when you think that there isn’t anything else they can add to their already near perfect engine, the next update is released and blows everyone away. Now they are pushing their tech to regions where current hardware just can’t cope.

If you’re lucky enough to be at the GDC this year, you would have gotten a sneak peak at a video highlighting some of the new updates to the Unreal Engine 3 tech. Unfortunately, for the rest of us we’ll have to wait until next week to get our grubby hands on it.

For now, here are a few images to soil your shorts to.

That second to last picture of the cigarette, the filter is too dark providing that only a small portion of the cigarette was actually smoked. Not to mention, that looks too dark. The filter gets a light brown at most during a standard size.

Bit of useless information.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

Crispex, that cigarette looks about 1-2 minutes into a smoke, and by the time a cigarette is done (at least that ive seen) it has a dark black dot and slightly less dark around the dot.

It's all pre-rendered, so practically any decent engine could achieve such results with competent shader programming. It's all hype yet again.

Most of this stuf by the higher-level shader programmers anyway. Guy called IndependentSoul has done Bokeh DoF, relief mapping, shedloads of stuff really.

Just to clarify, this is realtime. This is still entirely in UDK 3 and the images don't do it justice. The guys running the tech demo flicked through physics wireframes and stuff while it was running to show the differences ect.

Just to douse people who want this really really badly, unless you can afford Three Nvidia GTX 580 you wont be getting there anytime soon. Bare in mind though thats stright off the shelf hardware, not some multimillion concept technology, this is now and ready tech.

So this IS next generation.

I don't know, people are too easily appealed by nice graphics. Crysis is the perfect example of a game that looked gorgeous, but offered little in the storyline department, and lacked in the multiplayer. All it was, was a $60 tech demo. Crysis 2 isn't much better, sure, it looks better, but they lost my interest when they only offered graphics presets and didn't let you tweak things. I gurantee they have anti-aliasing turned on for the "Gamer" setting, (Gamer, Advanced, Hardcore are the settings, Gamer being the lowest.) meaning my graphics card was having trouble keeping up. Generally I find myself still sticking to classic games with less in the means of the graphics department. Call of Duty 4 has good graphics, is well optimized, and fun. A good game. I notice most Unreal engine games tend to lag a bit, and are generally poorly optimized. Look at Splinter Cell Conviction.

They might add it
and thats exactly why u shouldnt be judging a game from a demo
especially considering the way demos are handled these days (basicly an unfinished product u get to try, aside from 10 years ago where it was the real thing with just enough restrictions, in ways of say only 1-2 maps(missions) or lvl cap.)

I see it as, if a company releases a demo than obviously they feel it's close to their final product. Otherwise we call that a beta. Demo's generally mean that significant progress has been made enough to the point where one can try it and base a judgment on it. Regardless of them placing a disclaimer, they have to realize people will be judging it, thus they need to make it the best they can. Them putting a disclaimer on a demo (not a beta) is a sure sign to me that the company is trying to rush things and basically having the public do the testing to decide what to change and what not to. They inaccurately label it a "demo." Sure, there are such things as tech demos which allow you to see unfinished products, but in gaming you should generally have a good idea of where your game is going if you have the confidence to release a public demo. That's just my opinion though. If you're going to release something to the public, expect it to be judged, regardless of whether you include a disclaimer or not.

I've found that games that are well made on the Unreal Engine tend to perform top-notch on my computer. I think it is dependent at least as much on the game's dev team as it is on the engine itself.

Right, but there are still at least final touches to be made, such as in the menus (noticed it tells you to press 'start' despite a PC not having such a button?). The whole point of the demo is to show you what the game is going to be like to play, not how much customization the menus allow.

TBH, I reckon that you won't need insanely powerful rigs to run any Unreal games simply because it is such a high budget engine that it's code is most likely to be extremely efficient allowing for high framerates on not so high end machines.
Ultimately smart coding can be the difference between 10fps and 100fps.

I think the toyshop demo is close to the same quality standards as unreal, there just isn't as much blurriness/DOF.

However... it's super super easy to confuse the graphical quality of games made with an engine, and the graphical quality of the advertisements they've got going for the engine!

also, subsurface scattering is primarily a raytracing thing, right?

Yeah, other than a few things like DOF, the differences come down mostly to the art assets. Still, pretty impressive for a realtime demo from 2006!

Unreal is impressive, but I don't think we'll see games looking as good as their tech-demo screenshots for a while.

FPSC could create that screenshot. It just wouldn't be playable.

I'm very careful about saying what can or cannot be done in FPSC these days. The engine is orders of magnitude better now that it was 6 months ago.

John Carmack said recently some of the least attractive things in RAGE are antenna's, wire meshes, telephone wires and such because when you move they turn into an aliasy, pixelly mess. ID are thinking about writing a nice anti aliased telephone wire shader!!
