i have a computer with the following specs :

processor : AMD Athlon dualcore @ 3GHz
Gfxcard : ATI 2900 HD 512MB
RAM : 4GB
Motherboard : dont know probably not the most important

so my question is, what components should i upgrade ( buy a new one ) to enhance my gaming performance the most? like which ones are the most outdated?

thanks in advance

Depending on what model your cpu is, i'd say graphics card, 2 series is about as old as they get as far as i'm aware xD you can get an ati 5770 for less than £100 and it seems a decent card.

It is, I play Battlefield Bad Company 2 maxed at 1680x1050 at about 50 FPS. (Crysis at same settings for around 25-30 fps)

sounds nice! sadly i live in finland so everything is 30% more expensive but ill look into it. my main reason for wanting to upgrade was Crysis 2 my comp handles Crysis warhead on high/medium combo at bout 25 fps

what about this one? its newer and costs 30€ more
HD6850 1GB GDDR5

or maybe i should take this one?
HD 6990 4 GB for just 700€

I don't think the 2000 series is as old as it gets, if I remember correctly my old PC had a six year old AGP ATI Radeon 1600 in it, or something along those lines

And the 6850 is nice, if you can buy it I would say do it

And dont forget to check (ask the dealer) if the card you're buying is compatible with your system specs.

Cheers

IMHO, I would upgrade that 512mb GFX card into a nice nVIDIA 1GB card or a ATI. ATI for cost, but nVIDIA for quality. I would leave the rest of the specs as they are because my rig (with the specs roughly the same as yours) can handle Crysis just fine on High with 1920 x 1080 res. Unless you want to upgrade those too of course.

ok here are the detailed specs of my comp :

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer inc. CROSSHAIR
Memory RAM: 4x1024 MB DDR2 800Mhz Kingston
GFXcard: ATI Radeon 2900 HD XT

is this compatible with a 6850?

my comp seems to have 2 16x PCI-Express slots and one 4x PCI-Express slot if that helps

Your english is fine :p I believe he was joking

For that graphics card, you may want to check that it fits in your case, it's nine inches long, and that your PSU has a 6 pin power connector.

Yes I was joking.

I wish case manufacturers would start making their cases longer. There's no reason why they can't make it just a few extra inches, it'd still be an ATX case and would give us so much more room to work with. Some make it wider, but that's really pointless. A BTX case is longer I believe, but expensive.

I recommend taking a ruler and measuring inside your case to check there there is plenty of room, there would be nothing worse to buy such an expensive piece of kit to find it doesn't fit. xD

You'll also have to check the 6 pin, there should be a power connecter coming out of your psu with, you would never have guessed :p, 6 pins on it The gfx card needs the extra power I'm afraid. I think the manufacture also recommends a 600w PSU.

It's nice to feel well informed for once.

its all moving too fast. i remember the time when 2900HD was the most badass graphics card ever/ Hell it seemes that only yesturday PCI express was this speculated "future technology" that people thought was gonna fail since it seemed too good to be true. I miss AGP

AGP was a failure it its own right. They spent years designing a port simply for graphics, yet a few years later PCI Express would come out, offering a better graphics port that can be used for other things as well.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

I love my own AGP card, I would still have it weren't it not for SM 3.0, but yeah, PCIe is guite an improvement

But the GPU is what I would replace.
