I'm not sure if anyone here has already heard (I was surprised there wasn't a thread on it), but a MONSTER earthquake hit japan about 4 hrs ago (meaning approx at 10:00pm PST march 10). about 8.8 on the richter scale!

There's a live stream here:

Wow, that's crazy.

I just watched the live stream for a bit and the damage so far is amazing. So much water washing over everything.

[EDIT]
They just said that hawaii felt a 4.5 mag. quake and may be seeing tsunami effects as well. It definitely won't be as bad as it is in Japan, but it seems quakes are going around in the pacific.

It's crazy, there's a massive whirlpoool as well, and then that nuclear reactor didn't cool down so they're on nuclear alert :S

Not my video, found it on YouTube.

Darkcoder is on the west coast and his house shook, on the other side of Honshu, was big one. The Japanese were well prepared for it though.

Hawaii got hit, but it wasn't bad at all. Just some minor flooding.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

Because of an earthquake in early 2011? More likely Y2K; just a little bit delayed. Several oceanic/continental plates come together under Japan. Can't really blame this one on the apocolypse.

Now that the sun is rising over Japan, they are seeing tremendous devastation. The news is reporting now that the radiation level at the Nuclear power plant is 1000 times more than normal. Some are predicting that more than a thousand have perished. It's hard to prepare for an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and a whopping tsunami wave. I pray that there is less than a thousand.

Worst Earthquake Japan has seen on record, but worst earthquake since 1900. So, I'm not thinking 2012, just thinking it's a horrible natural disaster that can strike with little warning and little prediction of its severity. It's common for a so-called prediction to be seen with little validity when disasters occur. Think of how many predictions 'could' have come true because of some big disastrous event.

But it is all very saddening and I wish the best for those affected by the disaster. With the nuclear warnings on top of everything I hope the right action is taken to avoid making the disaster worse. It's good to see Japan has the support of other countries if they need outsider help.

It is very sad and I think that all of us hope for the best. There is another thread on this forum about North America Vs Northern Europe. I not one who ever envies anybody. I think everybody and every country has there own. There are a lot of things I am not proud about my country (USA) but there are some things I am proud of, and that is the help we are willing to give and pay for -- anywhere in the world -- if those who need it want it.

That's no moon... It's a space station.

Really is terrible news. But it looks like it isn't going to be as bad as first thought for places like New Zealand. But for the low lying islands it will be devastating.

Was there a weaker earthquake before the 8.8 quake? Because I'm sure I heard of an earthquake in Japan on Wednesday night.

I am (not specifically the year 2012) because of Biblical prophecies, not because of a man-made Mayan calender that resets to 0 every certain amount of years.

Yes it was 7.9 or somthing. Not sure the exact magnitude. I would think that this quake compounded the seriousness of the tsunami. Just my guess.

Quote: "because of Biblical prophecies"

Yes, I believe in Biblical prophecies. Not to turn this into a debate or anything (this will be the last I mention of it just in response).

Addendum:

Thanks for the update Neuro Fuzzy. I didn't think it was as high as 7.9. 7.2 does sound more right.

The one a couple of days ago was a 7.2, and the newest one was initially thought to be 7.9, then was upgraded to a 8.9... it might have been downgraded to an 8.8, not sure.

It's shocking what's happened. I thought Japan would have been better prepared, but like somebody further up said, there's no way you can prepare for something like this. My heart goes out to everyone affected, and I can only hope for the best.

We where all talking about it in work yesterday, before we started. Someone mentioned the earthquake and the whirlpool and then someone said about 2012.

Nostradamus predicting civil war, natural disasters etc, leading up to 2012 when the world is meant to end or just go chaotic with disasters to a point where civilisation basically ends.

I don't personally believe the world will end in 2012, but it makes for good stories and films XD

If anyone wasn't aware, if you have a paypal account they are offering to cover full processing costs to donate $25 to any relief charity's. There's an ad on the main paypal website. I went with the Red Cross, every little counts. Probably the most some of us can do to help Japan right now.

I dislike how news reporters are all like "A .1 change on the richter scale is a massive difference". It's a big difference in the ENERGY released, but the whole point is that as the energy of a quake varies linearly, the effect varies logarithmically (approximately)! So as the richter scale varies linearly, the effect varies linearly (approximately)! a curve with axes "richter scale" vs "effect" would be pretty much linear, like n*ln(n). There's a reason the richter scale is exponential!

Could you run all that past us again?

On a more serious note let's hope that many of the thousands of people missing are in fact alive. The loss isn't just the immediate loss of life and property though. I wonder how much good agricultural land has been ruined for example? The effects will be felt for some time to come.

There do seem to have been a large number of devastating events (floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis) around the world in the last few years.

The damage is incredible, I've never seen anything like it. I am so lucky to live in a country where this sort of thing never happens. I heard there are over 700 dead and no doubt they will find many more. It is a tragic reminder that even with all our technological advancements, the Earth still has dominion over our fragile lives.

I'm not making light of this event ( if that means that I take it as a joke ). I just repeated what a classmate told me and what I found quite reasonable opinion. What happend when the earth went into a global ice age. The earth made a global fart ( that's what my geography teacher called it ). It's just that we for so long have been acting, now earth finally shows her reaction.
Ofcourse it sucks for all the people who lost their family members and ofcourse I donated, I just didn't think my post would be taken that seriously, I'm sorry if I offended anyone with it.

On the subject, what happend to those nuclear cores that leaked radioactive steam, has that been fixed yet ( yes I missed today's news report )

^ I think jeku was just poking fun at you xD

As for the richter scale thing... Basically... all I mean is that if you add energy, the added effect of the earthquake is less than linear. If you have a 7.4 richter scale earthquake, and you add as much energy as was in the hiroshima bomb, no one would notice the difference! That's why the richter scale is a logarithmic scale!

(I did the math, and the difference between a 7.4 earthquake and a 7.4 earthquake + the hiroshima bomb, is .000107)

Quote: "[10:59 p.m. ET, 11:59 a.m. Tokyo] An explosion happened late Monday morning at the Fu.kushima Daiichi\'s No. 3 nuclear reactor building, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano confirmed to reporters.

The container vessel surrounding the reactor remains intact, Edano said, citing the head of the nuclear plant report.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK showed images of white smoke rising above the facility, which is in northeastern Japan. Citing the nation\'s nuclear and industrial agency, NHK said that a wall of one of the reactor\'s buildings had collapsed.

Residents remaining within 20 kilometers of the plant, despite an earlier evacuation order, have been ordered to stay indoors, according to Edano. The secretary added that initial reports suggested that radiation levels had increased after the blast, but Edano said he did not believe there was a massive leak, given that water continues to be injected into the reactors and that the pressure inside the reactor is \"within a certain range.\"

Edano said a day earlier that accumulating hydrogen gas \"may potentially cause an explosion\" in the building housing the No. 3 reactor at the Daiichi plant. A similar scenario played out Saturday, when a blast caused by hydrogen buildup blew the roof off a concrete building housing the plant\'s No. 1 reactor."

there is lots of stuff about japans nuclear powerplants melting down, it got me thinking.. i live right across the street from a nuclear research institute, which is a huge industrial complex. It has a nuclear reactor maybe even more than one, its also a place where nuclear weapons are developed. The bread factory where i buy bread is built on top of nuclear waste dump. so already i a eating nuclear bread. If a reactor melted down i am royally screwed because its right across the street from me. Well the actual reactor is a block away. Moscow alone has 13 nuclear reactors in the city

By far the most impressive footage from the quake, demonstrating just how prepared the Japanese are for this sort of thing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU1bYspMyQw

A couple of years ago I was in Japan and took these photos of the tsunami information at the town of Nachi, which as far as I'm aware was far away enough to not be affected:

And finally, my memories of Soma, a town just south of Sendai which was devistated. Im optemistic they'll be up and running again in time for this year's festival:

The tail end of that video also shows how little time many people had to escape to safety - how far can you get in 5 minutes? Even with all the prior preparation those people seeing a wall of water and debris heading towards them must have been terrified. For many the scale of the catastrophe must only now be sinking in - and the associated nuclear plant crisis may be the worst part yet.

I've been saddened by the parade of "nuclear experts" who keep reassuring us "that this is normal procedure" (referring to various attempts at cooling, evacuations, etc, at Fuushima). One in particular on the BBC was busy telling us that the first "explosion" was only a building collapse caused by the quake and that everything should be OK. Moments later the BBC showed footage of the "collapse" - and it was plainly an explosion as even he had to admit. The look on his face was classic. Mankind may yet pay a heavy price for its thirst for energy.

I saw on a news commercial that Japan moved 8 feet because of the quake. I don't know if that was just the news ways of getting my attention but it worked! Could that actually be true?

I'm seeing it all over the place, Japan moved 2.4 meters.

JFYI, 8 feet = 2.4 meters.

Green Gandalf, I think those numbers you see are the predicted heights of the wave. From what I remember hearing they had about 15 minutes.

Either way, I know if I was sat on the coast and saw the red-and-white line right next to my house, I'd panic. The wave came miles inland, in 15 mins I could probably run 2.5, maybe 3 miles with the adrenaline assistance (also assuming I was suitably dressed for a good long sprint).

No? There is about 3.2808399 feet in one meter (going by google). I think you are thinking of meters and yards, which are close.

That would be so scary, told that you had 5 minutes to get as far away as possible. :/

We were discussing this in geography today, it seems like those three nuclear plants try to be as close to the fault line as possible.

I think it's really commendable how well the Japanese have handled this - from what I've heard, evacuations and what have you seem to have gone really smoothly. It goes to show that good preperation is vital for events like this.

I heard on Good Morning America of the 50 people or so that stayed to try to repair and cool the reactors. The government told them to get out, over 5 of them have died from radiation poisoning. They said that nearly all of them volunteered to sacrifice their lives to say others.

Thats why they dont have mundane games about self preservation.... people fantasize about heros and heroic feats... those ppl are heros. It goes to show that maybe we arnt all evil and selfish. That kind of hits the dramatic soft spot in my soul. Watch they dont make a movie about it because its somewere far away and no one cares... think your neighbor here is going to do that for someone he doesnt know... thats something thats wrong with human kind in general... the love for anyone other then self is non existent. We are the only animal i can think of that has second guesses about survival of its species.. We have advanced ourselves to the point that most of what we do isnt survival anymore. So many things we do that just dont have anything to do with anything other then mundane routine. Organized society has ruined us as a species... we over populate then kill each other. Anyway those ppl stand for more then that and my dilution... they knew they had purpose and they condemned themselves for the sake of others...

Now im not suggesting this to anyone for health reasons but hopefully i hold a valid point. These people are heros not only of japan but of the human race in general. Sacrafice without reward. Something to celebrate... not stardom not athletes not media... the average guy looking out for his community.

now Crispex if this turns out to be falsehood you answer to me... lol...jk..

BTW if anyone hasnt figured out im a bit eccentric... maybe even crazy...\

[EDIT] yes for a 4th time.. I dont mind this... ^^^ the crazy part.. because crazy is usually diagnosed and medicated and never cured because its a part of evolution... (Though I hope my children arnt as crazy as me... it will be alot easier...)

I can't believe this has happened to Japan. I'm so sorry for everyone over there and I wish I could do something to help. I'm so glad they've got the support of so many others already.

Yeah, there has. It's rather interesting. I actually had a dream the other night that the world was ending. It was the scariest, yet also the coolest event I'd ever seen in my life, and strangely enough, when it was over, it wasn't actually over. Everyone I cared about, every person who's ever been a loved one in my life, and myself were all safe. I just don't know where we were, because it wasn't earth.

I have strange dreams sometimes.
