Hi

I've seen there are good options out there for free web hosting and free web domains but not in the same package.

Most free web domains usually have some extra stuff in the name like www.mysite.freedomain.com but I found one that only requires .tk at the end here http://www.dot.tk/en/pageA00.html.

I found a couple of free web hosts like http://byethost.com/ and http://www.heliohost.org/home/ but I need to make sure I can upload my own index page and other pages without having to use pre defined templates or editor tools.

Also I noticed some people use FTP for hosting files like http://filezilla-project.org/ but I'd prefer to have my files on a web server so I don't need to keep my PC on all day.

So basically can anyone recommend a site that has free web domains and hosting which allows web pages to be uploaded without using built in editors and templates and doesn't require the use of an FTP. If not what is the best way to go about setting this up?

Thanks

Indicium

000webhost is a good hosting service But you have a misconception of FTP, it's simply a way of uploading, once the file is uploaded, it's on the server and you can turn your computer off

Thanks.

Ok, I'm going to clear up something before hand. .tk "domains" are NOT domains. They are redirectors. Don't EVER use .tk. They have a history of being blocked by most things like msn, etc. because they are commonly used for phishing sites because of their easy availability.

110mb is still a decent site, though not as great as before, it's still somewhat decent.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

I think he was talking about FileZilla's FTP server, not the client. In which case, he would have to leave his computer on.

I offer world class business hosting >.< for free... kinda lol,

best way is to A> buy your own domain, this is just a pointer address, you can get it to point absolutely anywhere... even the moon.... lol no really you can buy www.yournamehere.com (.co.uk is cheaper if your in the UK - another additional secret to the .com and .co.uk but will leave that one aside for now ^^ only mention it to paying clients) and make it point to www.thegamecreators.com >.< but I probably would not recommend that as... you could find a law suit on your behind ^^ anyway on to B> figure out whether you can go for a paid solution, there are "cheap" hosting packages available however... I personally dont recommend them to anybody... C> it sounds like you know little on web design let alone hosting... correct me if I am wrong there... anyhow, you need to decide on the type of host, theres primarily two linux and my fav .net/windows, then you need to figure out what will you put on the site, how big it will be, will you put images sound files or your apps whatever... if your going to upload stuff, use free services to cut down the cost, dropbox is free for a few gigs, and has unlimited download bandwidth as far as I know so you can just give out a public link on the web-site to use as a download method ^^ that way you can keep your web site need to a minimum, to be honest I make 20 page web-sites within roughly 30mb with small video clips and loads of high res images... so, hope this helped and ask away should you need any further advice...

Hmmm...

I use Free Hosting Cloud. The only limitations to the server, other than the fact it takes a while to respond, is the 2,000 hits per month limitation. Other than that, it works well for me until I can get my own server. I've already tried using an old desktop as a server running Windows 2008, but found out I would need a business connection instead of a common home service. Otherwise, port 80 is blocked. I've also got my college webspace, but 50MB isn't a whole lot to work with.

I also use Filezilla for most FTP transfers. Most of my initial transfers are done inside Dreamweaver.

umm, you dont need a business connection, just a static IP, which you can and do get on home ISP providers, well, you do here in the UK... check with your ISP and see if they have STATIC IP options, you just need 1.

ISPs can block certain ports. The crappy ones block port 80. There's no way around it except using another port for http traffic, and typing that port in when you surf to the webpage.

Dynamic IPs aren't the end of the world, though, you can host a webpage behind a dynamic ip using services like dyndns.org which updates the dns entry with the current IP assigned to you. It does this by running a client program on your router or computer in your local network.

yeah but those services cost chaching... ^^

the port issue isnt a big one, just use it in your domain mapping feature as :80 at the end of your ip if your domain registrar supports it

eh? dyndns is free for one subdomain using one of their pre-set domains. And with any proper dns host, you can map your dyndns domain to a proper domain name.

Further, if you are a smarty pants, you can run a few scripts and update your dns server with your dynamic ip when it changes, but it's a bit of a hassle and only some dns providers support it (or you run your own dns server).

hehe run your own dns server... I agree with the smarty pants, im not much of a server wizard, thats why I love Server2008R2 makes things much more simpler compared to winserver2003 ewwk

anyhow subdomain... dont care about that, your domain is your domain not a subdomain... as far as I know dyndns is not a free service for direct IP setups for websites/servers my router integrates dyndns setup though, theres another thing to consider you need hardware that supports the service too

A dns server is fairly simple to manage actually. Dyndns only offers free subdomain service, but like I said, you can map a real domain to the subdomain in your dns control panel.

My router has a feature where it will automatically update dyndns with your new IP address every time its IP address changes. No hassle, no scripts, no need for a static IP
