Wimax internet using 4G towers. Download speeds seem pretty good to me, it's not the 18Mb I used to have with fiber but a lot better than I expected with something using cell towers.

http://speedtest.net
Down: 8mbps
Up: 0.5mbps

http://speedtest.net
Down: 6mbps
Up: 0.5mbps

I am going to have to call them because I was told I would have a 1.5Mb upload speed.

Something I always get confused about, is it Mega-Bits per second or Mega-Bytes per second?

We had to explain that to the network admin one day.

So you're only getting 1/10 of the advertised speed? I'd be calling them every day about that and making them reduce your bill until you hit somewhere at least near the speed they promised.

depends on if they can adjust your noise margin, tell them to change it to their lowest available sometimes 3 6 or 9 but if you got a bad router it might drop out

They advertise as Megabits however data transfer is measured in bytes so rule of thumb is

20 megabit, peak speed is 2.1-2.2 Mebagytes (2200Kbps)
(remember this is PEAK speed not actual speed they can not guarantee this speed but its the cap they have on the package - your speed depends on your distance from your local exchange and then in most cases the number of people locally on the same exchange who use the internet)

In networking you typically these days have 100Mbit cables for ethernet and also 1Gigabit Ethernet 1000Mbit

Which loosely translate to 100Mbit peak average 10-12Megabyte transfer speed and on the 1000Mbit which i have at home I get good speeds of around 60-110 Megabytes burst between computers.

I have only explained a tiny fraction in order to she some light for those who may have these questions or know nothing of the sort.

hope this helped.

Phaelax you lucky guy, but 4G should be here in the UK sometime soon... I am looking forward to the Dell Streak 7inch as they should implement 4G however it does have EDGE ^^ and im not sure as they have not released any information for the UK release model yet... hows you anyway?

Join the club, Virgin is a crap Isp. I've had so much crap with them, 20mb connection same as you, same results. Whats worse is that they got us by the balls with the 12 month contract, which we're paying more than there new deals. We pay the same price for there 40mb deal right now and we cant do nothing about it.

I was on the phone to them everyother day last month due to connection cuts and crap connection in general.

There the cheapest for a reason. Ring them and cause murder over it. My connection is a little more stable because of it.

I'm pretty happy with my Virgin broadband, 50mb, which I always get - I do pay like ÂŁ35 per month for it tho.

lol Van... your on fibre right?

obviously not cable lol like us poor suckers... unfortunately for me neither bt nor virgin has bothered with Manchester overall...

im stuck with a pathetic line that bt wont even bother to fix, when it rains my line starts to drop like mad... and stupidly yet cleverly I got myself in a 5 year contract lol which is 1 year down now... but for phone line I dont know anyone who actually owns the lines lol so going with another supplier seems pointless, broadband though... hm I may switch from O2 later in the year when mine ends with them and perhaps try directly with BE broadband since they do provide ore than 1 IP on the same package makes hosting my own multiple web-sites easier

EDIT

Multiple web-sites easier with their own root directories

EDIT

heres my result on speedtest.net

I spoke with their online 24/7 tech support and they did something to the modem to where I now get 1Mb upload. Apparently the sales rep lied to me about the 1.5, my plan is for 1. Sales rep also said it had wireless on the modem, which is does not.
I also asked the tech guy about the dhcp lease reservation, it wouldn't let me specify the IP I wanted. He said I had to call during normal business hours for that.

Quote: "I'm on a 500kb DSL connection"

Speaking of DSL, my friend has AT&T DSL and wanted it hooked up to her router so her son could watch netflix on the wii. AT&T couldn't figure it out so they wanted to charge her to send a tech out to the house. She then talked with 3 other tech "professionals" who couldn't help at all. I said let me look at it. Turns out most of these professionals seem to have forgot that DSL uses PPPoE (usually). Turned on PPPoE in the router, set the modem for bridge and viola! And people wonder why I have a low tolerance for others in my field.

I wouldn't expect my provider to offer support for anything other than the modem they provide and the connection to my house. Anything behind that I would think is my responsibility. Then again, I'm a networking person, so maybe I'm just backwards

Your contract will be stupidly over priced in a year never mind 5. Im now paying ÂŁ25 of month for a 20mb, have been for the last 6 months. In that time Virgin have dropped there 50mb package to from ÂŁ65 to ÂŁ25. A steady line contract i suppose, but its not like there going to raise much. *also they DO raise it with Vat increase, our bill went up due to it so read the fine fine print.

vat is always added after, however I get that back. so woop de doo ^^
however My line charge does not go up during the period of my contract, and besides when I reach my yearly expected spend, they refund me 15% onto my account ^^ so I would say, much cheaper than home phone lines with calls, I can call almost any country for 20p for 1 hour ^^ same for UK, and remember that expected spend which is ÂŁ200, includes vat I checked, so ÂŁ40 back plus the extra 15% me = happy dont you think? (add it up I get 35% total returned to my account, bt account not my bank in case your confused - not you just anyone reading this-)

your up speed is good, but its odd if you are getting that kind of upsteed, your line is fully capable of more downspeed I am sure of it... grade D telle me you got a bad line... perhaps you should have it checked out, but if your paying peanuts for it I wouldnt bother... or is that on 4G? lol better letting us know which type of connection your testing

I'm really starting to hate this service. My download earlier was only 0.7mbps until I restarted the modem. It had no bridge mode, so to use my router I have to put it into bridge mode and rely on the stupid modem to supply the IPs, which for whatever reason won't let me do a class A address. And it disconnects a lot.

I'd say it's average, I think 5-6 is average. I used to have 18 Mbps last year, I miss that.

I just ran a test on mine:

I know mine looks good in theory, but it's pretty worthless for gaming. My pings are twice as high as they used to be in CoD, and completely useless for Spore since I get disconnected so much. It reconnects within seconds so browsing the web you'd never notice, but in a game I'm booted.

I used to support that like 7 years ago, I don't envy you when you have to call support.

Notice how I have a nice speed, higher than the rest of ya, but at the same time I also have the highest ping.

Actually it's not too bad. The last time I called them was to get a friends internet going. I just told the person who first picked up "I'm a computer guy and this modem is shot. It was made in 2002... we need a new one.". The call was only about 30 minutes including being on hold waiting for a human. A new one arrived the next day.

Yeah so far Lazerus has the best service. I tried testing from a closer city that's less than 50 miles from me and got a horrible ping of 168.

That's surprising, since we're told to never listen to customers and if they say they're "experts" or they've done such and such steps, to make them do it again so I can confirm... It was pretty lame, especially when I was yelled at for not clearing cache/cookies when a a cisco engineer called about a faulty junction box (which we proved later was in fact the case).

Their policy on "experts" does make sense though. That phrase "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." is 100% right.

I was asked to fix a computer once that somebody had tried to fix themselves. They actually unscrewed the motherboard from the case and disconnected the power for the HD and DVD drive. The actual problem... some viruses.

This is about average for me.

It's an extremely consistent internet. VERY seldom is it any less or higher. Always right around 22-25. Ping is usually about 12-17.

I have comcast for basically everything in my house: phone lines, internet, and cable. They are a great company with great support in my experience. They are a little pricey but far worth the price for what you get.

Apparently our internet is faster than 85% of USA so that's pretty cool lol.

Another good one.

The cable company in my area was so bad it had to change it's name to fool old customers into thinking their dealing with a new company with a better reputation. I don't even think they have internet either.
