I am current watching a movie and started thinking why not start a thread on movies that have been interesting in the aspect of possibly creating a game (obviously we leave out movies based off of games lol - tomb raider - hitman - prince of persia... etc)

And also list movies we think actually are worth watching, not because they are popular or "cool" but because the quality of the filming or storyline was worth the time finding them and watching them.

So if you saw a movie that you think gave you an idea for a game (you dont have to tell us the idea that spun off it, but just tell us the name of the movie and a hint of the aspect maybe) then list it here, and also if you saw a good and well made film with worth watching credentials mention them here... I am hoping to see more low udget films listed here than the obvious garbage...

Also perhaps a link to the IMDB (or even the official website) site if you can be bothered ^^ or just post the year it was released so we dont confuse movies of the same name

Dont forget you can also mention anime too, but not series only the movie versions.

average rating means the average rating around the world... a movie given a rating of 15 in one country may have an 18 rating in another, just so that you know why I say average and not just rating.

heres my first few entries

WORLD CINEMA-

SHIRI (also known as SWIRI) (1999) - South Korea (average rating 18)
great action and fantastic moving/touching story really brings you into the movie and features a great soundtrack by Carol Kidd.
Could inspire an action game if you saw the action scene at the end.

Three Seasons (1999) - American made Vietnam based (average rating 15)
One of my personal best I went out of my way to buy it on ebay, came across it once on tv and immediately fell in love with it, great filming, great perfomances from the cast and a superb envisioning of a country torn apart by war yet managing to show its beautiful sides.
Game wise, the stear beauty of the environments can be recreated and some scenes can also be recreated for nice environments in your games.

The Chaser (2008) - South Korea (average rating 18)
If you like mystery then this is your movie, it really does drive your mind over the edge, you WILL find yourself shouting at the TV... I did... and just a reminder this is not for the feint hearted it is a slight bit gruesome and bloody... you have been cautioned, but verall its a movie you will strangely want to watch at least twice.
Game wise some of the environments might be useful to design game environments.

HITMAN (Sat sau ji wong) (1998) - Hong Kong (average rating 18)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0163818/ (might not link as it doesnt end in .html or something)
man I have watched this movie a million times, and have it on dvd yay, you should watch this movie as its comic characterising will have you in a giggle and also the filming quality was actually one of its best for Hong Kong at the time.
Game wise, some of the scenes are great to help setup a fight scene environment.

WESTERN CINEMA-

Shanghai Kiss (2007) - American made (average rating 15)
(I dont want to mention that silly H word here)
A fun and cute movie with a great underline, who are you really? and what will you do for others when you have the opportunity to help? ... its worth watching and was clearly a low budget story, does get you laughing often.
Game wise, you could probably replicate the story to be honest.

Three Kings (1999) - American made (average rating 15)
for those who have not seen this movie... you HAVE to see this one, its fun, thrilling and moving in its own way. I think a fun game can be made from this movie, however with slightly different happenings in the story.

TITAN A.E. (2000) (CG 2D & 3D MIX ANIMATED FILM) - American made (average rating PG yellow)
Man when i think back at it.. I wathed a movie before this movie we can not remember which movie it was because this movie blew out minds away im suspecting the movie before it was star wars ep1? anyway as soon as we finished watching that movie we walked out and there were people handing out tickets for a PREVIEW 15 min showing lol time was late and buses werent leaving often, and we said ok 15 mins aint bad, almost 90 minutes later lol and WOW amazing movie, but moving on, this movie had a great design a lot of thoughtand if you watch the making of videos on the dvd you will be inspired to do better your own games.

Just a note haha in case the above notes on the films sound too not original I did write them

EDIT added bolding highlights for titles

Battlefield Bad Company (the first one) shares striking similarities. However, I loved Three Kings, one of my favorite movies. I don't really think you can do much.

The only ones I'd like to see more developed would be the Bourne games. Actually, there is only one at the moment and it was rather repetitive.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

I`l go with:

1. Eraserhead
gave me a good idea for a survival horror.

And the movie is awesome!!!

Really screwed up bizarre things give me ideas, so be prepared to be disturbed if you watch any of the following:

The External World by David O' Riley (you can find this on Vimeo)

Waking Life (especially interesting if you have an interest in animation, lucid dreaming or philosophy)

Literally anything by David Lynch but especially:

Mullholland drive (do not expect to understand anything about this film)

Blue Velvet (which I personally do not like as a film in itself, but some really odd imagery in places, quite refreshing/inspiring)

Finally,

Downfall (Der Untergang) is not very weird, but because I'm big on history and something about it being subtitled really works for me. The air of authenticity I think, just makes it more real and the boardroom scenes get me fired up with ideas for strategy wargames

It's not a movie but this inspired me to create a game based on it.

Sorry that I have posted wrongly. But I have to respond to saying I have failed. Besides, there are already Star War Games as well as other games of movies mentioned. However, I have not failed as yet because I am making a game that is based on Dr. Who. Not an exact replication. It is my of my own making and all the adventures are not based on any episode. It is based on the premise and on the humour. It's name is "The Adventures of Dr. Jeremiah James and Bob Corvine -- Time Travelers Extraordinaire"

A movie? I already am creating a game but Star Trek would be one. However, I would not want to re-create the movie. I suppose that is what you are wanting. I will quietly leave now.

Edit

Yea, I misread your first post. I'm good at that. Leaving quietly again.

bare with me its 05:15am here and I havent had anything to eat for 6 hours... might have something shortly now that I think about it lol...

ooo also

SAHARA (2006 I think) - American made
I think this movie is well made with a slight bit of story missing I feel however nevertheless its still a great repetitive watch, and I really believe this can be made into a fab action adventure game.

a fight club game would be fail though... but as a movie... its awsome.. Im into it the other way around... movies of you favorite games.. even though they have yet to do one right... prince of persia i havnt seen yet though it really was a game long before a movie. Actually i cant say that there has been a decent crossover in my eyes ever.. mortal kombat was a landmark game... and a terrible movie. Double Dragon was a good game in its day. A terrible movie. Street Fighter has been one of the longest running fighting series ever. A terrible movie... (live action version..im kind of into the animated movies personally.. but then again they were done by capcom) On that note: Most game movies are great if thier done by the game studio Final Fantansy (All of them) Street fighter II and street fighter alpha the animated movies... were awsome.

Now if they were done right i would love to see a Primal Rage movie... but thats because i love monsters kicking the crap out of eachother... and monsters.... Skies of Arcadia, Out of This World / Heart of the Alien would be an awsome movie... err Rise of the Robots..(lol)

to got the other way... um... The Notebook. Life. Bugsy. no...
I cant think of any movie that inspires me to create games... games usually inspire me to create games.. MVsC3 Super Street Fighter 4.. i love fighters and i love monsters.. so that pretty much bottles it up in a selling soft drink for me..

Umm Hitman was a decent port over, just wish they would make another one, Prince of Persia did pretty swell I just wish they didnt sell the movie rights to disney... stupid stupid stupid,
umm Tomb Raider movies, the first one anyway did kinda capture the game essence however it would have been even better if they captured the in-game camera angles a little more...

However I do believe there is a Metal Gear movie on the way... can not wait, however... I think its going to be an EPIC FAIL as they are NOT using David Hayter for the voice....... I might as well just play all the cut scenes from the games back to back, would prefer that, his voice is just the best in game voice I reckon by far... unless Sephiroth could speak in FFVII ^^ (mind you I think I might make a new thread for FFVII right now... surprise )

However this thread is about movies that inspired you... we all know games inspire games, and the lists can go on forever... so please for anyone else thinking of following the line of reverse mechanics ^^ please dont >.< as it would go adrift from the main topic.

Aliens.

In fact any sci-fi movie from that era is inspiration gold-dust... Predator, Terminator, Robocop, Highlander, Bladerunner etc. Aliens though, well it's the movie that inspired Doom, arguably the most important game ever made. It's just a shame that the Alien franchise didn't inspire it's own games more.

haha I mean only during the action scenes it would have been cooler is we saw from an over the shoulder perspective at least once rather than from in front constantly however I do remember they got the side running shooting cam view done right

Basicly any game that would try to capture that over the shoulder thing would go straight into the trash for me, there is a reason it isnt done, and there is a reason to why it is done the way it is now, it simply doesnt work.
I believe it would take out the momentum of it.

EDIT

Just so that I do not double post...

I know its been done already but it was ages ago and really was hard to play, The Fifth Element could do with a modern remake/game, fab story fab movie fab cast

As far as good movies go, The Usual Suspects and American Beauty = amazing. Kevin Spacey is brilliant in both of them.

As far as movies to video games probably: The Book of Eli (Don't say Fallout), Doomsday, Kill Bill (volume 1 and 2), and The Boondock Saints.

Ah! I have to say that movies like "The Postman" make me want to play a game similar to it.

Maybe Water world and mad max, but to a lesser degree.
