I am pretty annoyed about one aspect of the forum...

Quote: "Receive email to your MailBack address each time someone replies?"

This is a real kick in the balls, I hope it can be an automatically selected option in future... sometimes I start to think... OMG I have been posting so many today, did I click the one on the last post in that other thread? ... it feels like the feeling you get when you leave your home and think after your a mile away (or even 1 metre away) did I close and lock the door properly?

EDIT

an extra as mentioned here by dustofdeath http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=182852&b=39 is to have a forum post list as we have a thread list in our profiles on the forums.

I think the forum needs a good old update.

I mean, why have things like a profile button? - When you could just have a hyperlink on people's names on the left.

And why have we still not fixed the typo in the Post Forum Message box when you hold your mouse over the image button.

It could do with a liking system too in my opinion (like Facebook, or just have it so you can automatically like things and it'll like them on your Facebook wall. )

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SOCIAL NETWORKING = EVIL I hate it when a website integrates FB with itself... if I want to post on FB about something.. and i really really really want to share it I will do it manually... it just makes a web-site alll clutterred!

I read somewhere that someone wants a poll function on the forum... that would be better than a like (lick for some) thing...

umm I dont see the hover text on the buttons... no idea why not... which browser you using?

Well the typo's been there for aaages - I used to get it in Firefox and now I still get it in Chrome.

I hold my mouse over image and it comes up with Inset an image instead of Insert an image.

It says "inset an image" on mouseover. I assume he thinks the correction should be *insert, but inset is actually a word and it does fit the purpose of the button, so as to whether or not it's a typo...

I'd like to see a private messaging system implemented here. It would make TGC-related discussions between forum members more convient than the current email back and forth IMO.

HAHAHAHAHAH I THOUGHT YOU MEANT THE POST MESSAGE BUTTON...

you are very eagle eyed thts good, yeah I see it now too I agree, howevr I think one issue might be that... once the ball starts rolling... it is difficult to control... what i mean is, the code for the forum may be so deep, finding that specific part may prove time consuming ^^ and also if they were to revamp the forum,, other than aestetically, it might crash :S and we dont want that... also a new forum may mean it might be difficult to port over the existing content... or they are planning it already, however this can be a big challenge... I think they could just keep this forum as archive but still be functional and just open up a MODERN forum with shiny new features and we can all just do as we always do... post links to old forum pages

xD I know inset's technically valid - there was a thread about it before but it just sounds wrong.

I've never heard of anyone saying "inset an image" into something computer related. - It's always been insert. - And especially considering all the other buttons (except email) say insert if you hold your mouse over them. xD

Inset definately fits; completely relevant to the matter. I don't think it's a typo at all. If it were, it would make more sense that only one button would have the mis-spelling.

Quote: "only image and email have the typo link and code have insert so looks like a typo"

And then I say, only link and code have the "typo".

I do want to add, I know the word inset very well, but just feel insert would be a more appropriate word to use...

That still doesn't make it a typo , which was all that I was saying in the first place It's a synonym for insert, so either word will suffice (or in this case have sufficed for quite awhile, apparently)

no I know, but tey I am making my point over how the words used dont follow the primary logic... however I accept both words, just feel insert would be more appropriate... I think it must be one of those progressive design things and eventually forgotten lol

I do it often when I start designing a website for example, I start with a particular format/layout and eventuallt start making changes along the way... an when I do a final preview I pick up on the errors in design lol, more inconsistencies... lol oh well

It's preference more than anything. I would assume that in this case, they chose to use the two different words to break up the repetiveness. For example;

Quote: "The car was red. The car had four doors. The car would not run."

Quote: "The car was red. The vehicle had four doors. The automobile would not run."

Either way works; neither is incorrect; it just depends on the *writer's preference. I doubt they really put that much thought into it; but...yeah. Ah...the little things we find to discuss in the Geek Culture board

I'd say it was a typo since the link and code buttons have 'insert' written instead.

How do you know the link and code buttons aren't the typo? Both the email and image buttons have inset written as link and code have insert.

I'd like to ditch mailback and not have private messaging either. Mailback clogs up emailboxes and means you have to check your emails to see if you should check the forums . We have discussed private messaging before and everyone agreed that there's no need for it, if you want to talk to someone privately you can email them, otherwise do it in public on the forum.

I would love to have a "Followed Threads" section that updates you on the threads you want to follow, this would include your own threads and ones you've posted in as well as other threads you just want to watch (such as WIPs), but you could also remove threads from your follow list as you wish.

I imagine it would be a button on the bar with the home, profile and logout buttons at the top of the page. It would indicate when there has been activity in one or more of your followed threads, maybe even show the number of unread posts. Then when you click on it you get a list of all your followed threads in the same layout as the boards but only with the threads you have marked to follow.

This would be good for me because I often want to check up on the same threads regularly, and ones that are not of my own creation can be hard to find sometimes.

Most forums that I've used with a PM system give you the option to disable that function (ie, "recieve email notification when someone..." [ ] <---remains unchecked)

It would be nice for the forums to keep track of the threads I've replied to. Sometimes I leave so many replies around the forum, I forget half of the ones that I said something in.

As has been said 100 times before in other threads like this: users who want to be messaged put their email address on their profile. Email serves the same purpose as PM. If someone doesn't have their email address listed, then they don't want private messages. Really, what's the difference?

There's really no need to fix something that isn't broken. The TGC forums serve the purpose they're set for perfectly well.

I rather like the lack of a PM system. It's just one more area where all the "GIMME TEH CODEZ" folks can bother other users, as well as spammers, etc etc.

The only thing that sounds relatively useful so far in the thread is "View your posts" vs our current "View your topics". Although, I wouldn't like to see "View your topics" replaces by posts, that would be too much clutter, all the time.

As for a "Like" button on anything...that stuff annoys the hell out of me. I'd be against it.

Karma was tried on the one of earlier (off the shelf) DB forums. It didn't add anything to the experience. Rather just providing an easy harassment button for feuding members.

The view my replies thing would indeed be good. But really searching should have greater precedence.

Well, 101 times after everyone was asking for the option to embed videos in their posts; despite the popular responses from other users being it a waste of forum space, or something along the lines of;

Quote: "The TGC forums serve the purpose they're set for perfectly well."

...we have these; |youtube||/youtube| The squeaky wheel gets the grease, apparently. What are we up to with the PM system, 96...ish?

I personally think a PM system would be beneficial to a lot of users here, rather than having to mix personal contacts from our email/skype/msn/etc accounts with members of the TGC forum that we know by their forum names, just to follow up on a question asked in a thread here. In the least, a PM system could be considered a better "serve of purpose" to the forums than the ability of embedding our favorite music videos for everyone to see; or a penguin, for that matter;

The Youtube thing was relatively easy to implement. A PM system, while not challenging, involves creating a bunch of new pages. And for what? Use email.

Honestly, I've never understood the opposition against a PM system. I don't know about anyone else but I don't like just handing my e-mail address out to random people on forums, since for me an e-mail is quite a personal thing. If you're a social recluse and don't want to be contacted whatsoever then with most decent PM systems you can disable receiving messages altogether, or specify to only allow moderators and friends to message you. I see many benefits and zero drawbacks apart from the time it would take to implement such a system.

I would like the forums to present the search results for words in the subject of a topic being posted by members whom are new or flagged, before allowing them to confirm said post.

Also, an option in the profile that asks members whether it should be 'insert an image' or 'inset and image'.

I would also really like it if the forum was presented in the form of a MMORPGFPS, so I could shoot several members on here with rocketlaunchers. We should ask said members to create this.

The only thing I really see as a problem is that time, as you say. I will speak to TGC and see if they'd like a PM system. I can try to put one in but my design skills are *REALLY* bad.

So with this new PM system now the spambots get to bypass the new user post approval system? Spam straight into everyone's PM box...yay

I'm not arguing against the system. I see no need for it, but if it was there so be it. But as some new users already complain about being on post approval, not being able to PM on top of this would drive some insane...

EDIT
I've been on forums where certain features were disabled until you've made x number of posts or been a user for a certain amount of time. Without fail as new users appear they create threads about why they shouldn't have to be included in this.
