Just curious, is there any performance difference when mapping a drive letter to a network resource if you map it to the specific IP rather than the resource name?

For instance, if I map M: to "10.1.1.198/music" instead of "buffalobox/music"

I imagine there may be a lag on the initial lookup if it's not cached. I imagine on a LAN the lookup would take just a few milliseconds. Once the name address is stored, it would be just as fast (if it is cached).

I can't find a whole lot of info on this service, but if you're concerned about performance, try it with just the IP or map the IP to the hostname in your HOSTS file.
