Just stumbled on the trailer for Operation: Racoon City earlier this morning. Can't wait for this one, though I am a bit conflicted as it seems lately, the Resident Evil franchise is losing it's original alure and just following all of the other generic shooter games out there. Was wondering if there were any other Resident Evil fans out there? Thoughts, maybe?

Did a bit of internet searching and found out a little more about it. The game appears to be maybe a bit too Left 4 Dead-"ish" for my liking, but meh;

Quote: "The game takes place in 1998, a time where Resident Evil fans already know what's set to take place.

The title lets you enjoy the series from a new perspective, as the men and women who are technically responsible for it all.

Rather than continuing the zombie slaying antics of BSAA agents, you're taken back to the original outbreak "that underscored both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis."

The game doesn't require any crazy amounts of knowledge of the past titles or characters involved in the series. The title opens up to a "quartet of new faces". Essentially, you're playing as members of the official Umbrella Security Services squad.

Operation Raccoon City is a team-based shooter allowing four members of the USS team to destroy all evidence of the ongoing outbreak. Along with slaying the zombies, you're looking to "kill pretty much every survivor possible".

The gameplay is described as "dirty", and the series will feel much darker than it has up to this point.

The game features three factions that Capcom has stated make up a "three-corner conflict". The other two factions are the US Spec Ops, who are there to repel the USS, and the "bio-organic weapon monsters (BOWs) created by Umbrella.

Whichever team you play on, you'll be facing Umbrella-created horrors in between skirmishes with each other.

Zombies in the game can sense you in three different manners: sight, sound, and smell.

Quite a few scenarios in the game aren't "all about headshots". A quote in the article states, "It's about shooting the other soldiers - manipulating them, making them bleed."

The game will take you through a number of familiar areas if you're a Resident Evil junkie who remembers your journey to Raccoon City.

Operation Raccoon City, depending on how you play the game, will give you the option to "change the history of Resident Evil". Not only will you have the chance to meet and interact with various characters from the series, but you'll even have the opportunity to kill them.

This is not a one-versus-one game where you've got one clip full of ammo and zombies on you. If you've ever thought of those times in an RE game when you thought, 'I'd wish I had a big gun', that's what this game is. It's not fair to give people big guns, then take all the ammo away.

One of the pictures in the article showcases a zombie being used as a "meatshield.

Operation Raccoon City allows players to earn XP for kills, with these points helping you survive the onslaught, and to help to encourage you to anihilate everything in your path.
The XP will allow you to earn new abilities.

Tyrants will most definitely be included in the title. "

Sidenote:

CAPCOM is also bringing Resident Evil 4 and Code Veronica to the PS3/Xbox 360 with a graphics update and new achievements this year.

Can't really tell much from the video, but to me it just looks like a L4D clone set in a more popular universe.

Yeah, I'll be checking that one out for sure. But, being such a big fan of Resident Evil, despite where the franchise is going these days; I'm still going to follow this new "Left 4 Evil" game. IGN is supposed to get a demo this summer, so hopefully there will be some actual gameplay to see when they upload their video rather than an unhelpful trailer with the title banner flashing over and over again.

Another thing that has me worried about this game is Slant 6 is developing this one. Slant 6 was behind the development of SOCOM Confrontation; and it was the only SOCOM from the series that needed CONSTANT patches and bug fixes. It's been out for a few years and they're still bombarding it with patches

This looks really boring, I like horror games that have a scary feel to them. Like the originals did.

Yeah, it really is a shame that CAPCOM decided to go the route they did with Resident Evil when the originals already had millions of fans following them. Guess you can't argue from their side of things though, considering 4 and 5 sold the most out of the series. I guess these days, gamers don't really look for variety anymore; they want all of the games in their collection to play the same, more or less.

In the very least, I am looking forward to Code Veronica being ported to the PS3. That was always my second favorite title from the series

I agree to some extent. Love the earlier Resident Evils; back when they were one of a kind. And they've always seemed to lead the way with stunning visuals for the current era. It was the series that coined the term Survival Horror in the first place, and really introduced zombies into video games. But now, yes. They seem to be molding the series to follow the same boring, mediocre action shooter-type feel like all of the other Call of Dutys, Gears of Wars, and other shoot em ups out there. Looks like now, they're going to take a crack at Left 4 Dead.

EDIT: Forgot to post the other website I found last night. This one talks a bit more about the CV and RE4 ports, and shows a few screenshots comparing the "HD".

I loved the original RE games, but personally I can't fault RE4, best GameCube game, and the GameCube has the best version. RE5 was too short. Going back to the first game on the DS a few years ago, well it's still a great game but by todays standards it can be really clunky and annoying.

I'll buy this, because I was a bit dissapointed with the lack of improvements with L4D2 over L4D - in fact I don't think I've played much of the sequel at all. It'll give me a an excuse to use my snazzy little Wii lightgun.

I'll buy it as well, but simply because it is a new Resident Evil game. Depsite the series' transition over the years, I do admit the games are still entertianing in their own appeal.

Will you be grabbing the HD version of RE4 when it hits the PS3/Xbox stores?

Nah. For me, the GameCube version was stunning, and I've played through a few times on that - doesn't need to be prettier to keep me happy. I have it for the Wii as well, although I haven't played it yet, so I'm in no hurry for a 360 or ps3 version. The best thing about the HD, is that more people will be able to play it and realise how brilliant it is.

I will. xD

I got it on PS2 and went to go play it the other week, but due to my eyes being adjusted to PS3 graphics it was just to pixelated and blurry for me to get past the first chapter. Can't wait to enjoy RE4 again in HD.

I suggest you play it, it's possibly the only game on the Wii that I enjoyed, it's absolutely brilliant, although I admit it would be better if the Wii had HDMI output.

Nice. When I bought my Wii through Amazon last year, I ended buying all of the Resident Evils that were available for it. Only added an extra $80 or so, so I thought it was worth it I ended up with the remake (which is beautiful even on the Wii, and my favorite title from the series), RE0, RE4, the Umbrella Chronicles, and the Darkside Chronicles.

RE4 was a lot of fun on the Wii. And if I'm not mistaking, Assignment ADA wasn't available on the Gamecube version, but it is on the Wii (and the PS2 version). So, if you haven't played that extra mini-game yet, you have that waiting for you when you do. Seperate Ways is another mini-game you can unlock on the PS2 and Wii versions after running through the main game. I've always enjoyed all of the extra goodies and unlockables the Resident Evil games come with.

seems to me they are just fulfilling the "current gamer class" as oppose to those that made them... and to say RE4 / RE5 sold more, could be because distribution got easier (Steam - Direct2Drive...etc) and price for pc versions were cheaper, my guess is that RE5 sold better on the PC than any other platform but thats just IMO, I kinda enjoyed the (could do with a partner) prospect in the online mode as a human player in an RE type game kinda makes life easier (help I need med kit!!! now!!! - over mic >.< so yeah I dunno about this raccoon city thing, however I doubt I shall purchase... I do not like zombie FPS (first got to grips in CS:S then tried demo weekend of L4D hated it) games so if this is a L4D type game, consider me at the other end of a barge pole,

My 2 Cents

MrValentine

PS.
For an avid collector of the series I suppose they got no choice but to collect them ^^ the movies are seemingly catching up to the number of games titles very quick now... hmm

Resident Evil has never been FPS; unless you want to count the on-rail shooters. So this game will most likely use the same third person/over the shoulder camera as 4/5.

Yeah, I'll have this one soon enough.

I have no idea what that means.

EDIT: I understand now. I also understand you meant if the first time. I was simply stating my assumption that since the earlier Resident Evils stayed away from first person, this one most likely won't be one either.

Actually RE 4 was rated as one of the greatest titles for game cube in its existance... this list also included metroid prime and metroid prime 2 (the fist higher up on the list then the second..) honestly the gamecube may have presented limitations compared to its competitors but honestly it didnt keep developers from creating some kick a$$ games. Metroid prime series is one of the coolest there is.. hands down... and if anyone has a problem with me better step up. (juggernaut on black panther tv series...)

Yup, the GameCube was vastly under-rated, much like the DreamCast. I especially like the refraction effects on some GameCube games, like Pikmin 1/2. Don't know why but other consoles seem to not bother with things like refraction too much. In fact the humble Wii often looks better than the PS3 and 360 IMO - like that fuzzy bee in Mario Galaxy 1.

Maybe I'm just sick of seeing the same shaders all the time, damn Unreal engine, every game looks good, but every game looks the same.

acutally thats another fav of mine... i used to have a bunch of DC games... MVSC 2 E.G.G, i think Skies of arkadia...., soul caliber 2... dream cast was awsome... i wish i still had one... (Not to mention the crazy stuff you could do with it... save editing lol...

Ah...

actually if i remember right i think gamecube was more versitile graphically then xbox of ps2... but i cant remember if that was true or not... i just remember playing game cube games that blew xbox titles out of the water..

EDIT:

Actually you have to hand it to nintendo as well.... honestly they seem to be good at picking fun titles as well... i cant remember the last gamecube game that i bought that was boring... I know they exist... i just didnt find them. Even in the bargin bin.... Billy Hatchter. Sonic adventure... fun games... maybe not the most challenging or graphically supirior but fun none the less... Something easy to overlook when your trying to pust todays graphics cards to the brink.... lol

EDIT: actually i think those were dreamcast titles as well... lol..

I always liked Unreal Tournament on the DreamCast, playing split screen against bots, well back then it was about as fun as console FPS games got. Quake3 Arena was good too. There was this radio controlled car game that we played a lot (Re-Volt I think), racing around neighborhoods and supermarkets... Anyway, that was great, we'd play 4 player split screen, really good physics as well. Then there's all that retro stuff, like MAME, and the DC controller was ideal for SNES emulation. I miss the DreamCast - If SEGA decided to get back in the console game, maybe with a handheld version, well I'd be all over that!.

That was an awesome game. The fact that it came with a track editor was especially cool.

I have played and completed every resident evil game to date even things like guidan for Gameboy colour and I think that Capcom thaught of the left for dead style consept first with the Outbreak series on PS2. This game looks cool as it seems to have leon in it and I believe that this game is an updated version of Resident evil 2 and 3 which chronologicly happened at the same time in the series and within the same area. This info is going off some mapping consepts that I saw at a capcom gaming convention where I could recognise the maps from resident evil 2 and 3.
