SO i thought a couple of days ago that games would have the potential to run with the same FPS on better graphics settings in a smaller window. Quite obviously the drawback is that the player would be looking at a small window. With a mini 100 by 100 window a typical laptop could possibly run a game on full graphics settings, assuming the game was designed to do so.

So what do you think would be better, full screen or large windows with low graphics, or a tiny window with high graphics?

Assuming this would be possible then I would say it depends on the game. I don't want to be playing a FPS where I have to see my enemies from a distance on a 100x100 window, because that would be impossible. However, if it was a Mario type game with jacked up graphics then I would probably prefer the smaller screen.

You could change your screen resolution to 640x480!

I'm guessing you'd get pretty much the same performance rendering a 100x100 screen (taking into account all the pixel shaders etc), as you would rendering a 100x100 screen stretched to fill the whole screen. I don't believe stretching a 100x100 render takes much CPU/GPU, so you could play a tiny render on a full screen anyway at pretty much the same speed, it'd just look pixelated.

Yeah, the same amount of polygons and texture data have to be shifted, so the only speed improvement would be from the actual display buffer transfer. Not a lot. Personally I would rather have a native resolution with lower texture detail etc, I can live with basic graphics, but I can't live with squint-induced-headaches. Even if it's pixelated, full screen is better for any game on a laptop IMO.

I actually got better performance in GTA4 in 1280x1024 than 800x600. Modern graphics cards are optimized to display at higher resolutions.

What annoys me is when games assume you will play in an incredibly high resolution, though, which you might not even have access to. I got Empire: Total War recently; on a low resolution the text is blurry and it seems to get crisper as the resolution increases, but even at the maximum resolution it's still not quite clear enough to not hurt my eyes when reading.
