So my laptop stopped actually doing this about six months ago, but today it started doing it again... As stated in the title, sometimes my laptop will be charging, and if i unplug it, it totally freezes. First it becomes unresponsive, literally the only thing that works is the mouse, then it too stops working So, usually the only solution is to either close it and hope it goes to sleep or hold the power button down and hope the HDD doesnt crash... I did research and most likely it's the BIOS or the power supply. Im going for the latter, because my laptop battery sometimes last hours, sometimes days , same with charging (it doesnt actually take days to charge, but you get the point), and my USB cooler tends to vary speed occasionally. So, all help is appreciated... I just want to see what you guys say

Hehe i feel like im always complaining on the forums, when as a matter of fact i am an extremely positive person

Do you keep your laptop plugged in for long periods of time? because i do and mine does something simular but not as severe as you described, is your laptop a really up-to-date gaming laptop or just a multi-purpose personal laptop?

hey DBD79

Same as above and also, did you checkout your bios settings and check the S3 state?

Laptop model and spec and BIOS version may help in diagnosing your BIOS related concerns...

Wehreas unplugging, Which OS is loaded on it, and have you checked advanced power settings? maybe the CPU performance is set far too low and had been forgotten could be that reason and it kicks out for that very reason... also, how old is it, and if over 4 years old, is the battery still the original? and also another thing if you do keep it on for ages at a time, did you get and use a cooling urm stand thing?

Hope this helped, ask away always happy to help you buddy.

I mainly focus on PC's as I have over 12 years history with them... laptops I am only good at diagnosis... and mainly software related fixes. can only advise on minor hardware related fixes, memory changes, hard drive changes and dvd/battery etc... not a solderer though but will be looking into that in the near 2011 future as its on my agenda for this year ^^

EDIT

There is no such thing as complaining IMO... there is just an enquiry ^^

was the battery purchased by OEM (original manufacturer spec) or third party (will do, can do) battery?

EDIT

Or Warranty replacement?

hmm, try checking the status of the waranty and request a new part, all I can suggest for now, if that doesnt help we can look at other options, for now all issues point at Battery.

However you could try checking if you can get an updated flash bios .

Oh USB cooler confused me, so you do have a cooling tray >.< I was tired when i read it previously... tired now even lol just got some work done finally .

Check the BIOS version and compare to HP's website. did you have a memory upgrade between purchase and now? could be imcompatible memory with the BIOS or simply the Memory may have leaks, run a mem check using windows disk, or press F8 on startup.

when i had the same issue with my laptop it was because the battery was getting old. When the battery starts to wear out it dosent output as much voltage as its supposed to. so lack of power to run critical hardware components=computer freexing up. it would be the same if you hoook up a powerful desktop PC to a very underpowered PSU like 120W. your computer will start freezing up very often

Oh why didnt I mention this before, when your using it wired, remove the battery prior to startup, then hibernate remove wire and insert battery then startup, keeping battery in while using mains is pointless. DO NOT INSERT OR REMOVE BATTERY WHILE WIRED UP!!!

but yeah you get the picture so far like my new sig btw?

even i wouldnt bother doing something so comlex. I would just remove the battery alltogether and keep it on the wire

MrValentine i love your new sign, its really cool and has dark basic dude in it. I wish i was as dedicated to dark basic as you are lol

@ PAGAN

well, in regards to my loyalty to DBPro, its my first programming language to date, I am more a designer than coder... but now i am also looking into .NET technology as my future language in terms of Silverlight and Rich web content creation... will eventually jump onto DGDK and C++ and keep LUA on the side along the way...

But yeah I hate laptops for this very reason... cheap or expensiv, same issue accross the board...

i guess i am also more of a designer. but i like dark basic because its easy. i tried .net stuff it was just too complex and it forced me to follow strict sytax. i always have a bunch of ideas and glorios plans for like the next epic final fantasy-like game or something but i lack patience to sit and program. ill program for like 1 week then get bored of it or run into a problem with my code which requires me to rewrite everything and abandon it untill i get my next wave of insparation and programming will.

but yeah, laptops do suck. the laptops they made during late 90s- early 2000s were weaker in processing power but the build quality was like 100x superior to what they have now. Now laptops will last you 2 maybe 3 years before the case starts to fall apart or a screen hinge breaks. and thats like if you take really good care of it too. i still have some of old laptops p2- p3 they are more than a decade old, they were horribly abused, and they still look brand new. the quality of plastic back then was just awesome!

Ok well to answer all of your questions, the battery is only 3 months old, replaced at the end of the laptops year warranty. So it's currently now out of warranty, but ill check out the BOIS

To answer the second and third posts, it only freezes when i unplug it, sometimes, and when i manage to unfreeze it, it will run absolutely fine with just battery erm, i just unplugged it and lets see here, seems to be working awesome! Haha, come to think of it, the day i posted this thread was the only day since like 6 months it has done this, and im quite sure i had 3 resource hungry apps running at that time: Chrome, Skype, and Audacity That could be my prob right there. Again, if i unplug it without it freezing successfuly,it runs fine on battery. I have both on and of power set to 100 percent performance... And about taking out the battery, that would be a lot of a hassle, my plug can fall out easy, and if the power goes out then that could result in the dreaded hard drive crash sound Then perhaps an operating system not found error Lol i do like your new sig

I do all the time. From my experience, every time I had a battery in with the adapter in, the battery has drained much quicker becoming an expensive paperweight by the end of the day.

I ALWAYS remove my battery when plugged in, and it's been lasting over 2 years with its original 2 hour charge.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

i always found that expanding virtual gigabytes of prosessors on my paging file is contributing to the overal decreas on my puters speed performance so i just turn off the paging file

well mt laptop has 3 gigabytes of prosessors. i added a big paging file and my system slowed to a crawl as it was depending too much on the paging file which is slow. then i put it to 0 and now its all fast as long as it dosent exeed 3 gigs

well, virtual memory is stored on the HDD, therefore using write and read time, and remember this is while your loading a game or starting and using photoshop or whatever resource heavy application... I am ok I got a number of drives hha so my write time is minimal I have resourse minitor open consistantly now to monitor the activity myself its ace!

I see, that makes sense So it essentially takes RW time away from other things that use it decreasing performance?
