Hey! So last night I exited iTunes, and being the lazy guy that I am didn't want to open it back up to disconnect my 80gb iPod Classic from the computer. I just disconnected it using Windows (the right-click to disconnect thinger). I thought this would be alright but when I removed my iPod, after the unbearably long disconnecting wait, it said that there was no music on it. I then proceeded to check the amount of free hard drive space and it said I had 30.3gb left out of 80gb. Naturally I'm thinking, WTF? After school today I plugged it in to resync the songs back on, and before I could do that iTunes magically listed all the songs. I disconnected it again (using iTunes this time), and now it was fixed. Back to how it used to be! Has anyone else ever have this problem or can confirm that disconnecting using Windows 7 can cause problems?

Do you use any programs other than iTunes such as SharePod? If so, just reconnect and disconnect through the program.

Apple specifically tells you to use iTunes.

Also, the only purpose for the "remove hardware safely" button is to check to see if anything is writing to the disk. If you're not transferring any data it can be removed normally. In years of computing, I've only used the safely remove hardware twice.

Reconnect. If you still have problems, back up all your songs and other data and re-install your firmware. The glory of Apple is they lock down your devices so much that it's seriously impossible to mess up the bios.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

I've never bothered with the eject button on any ipod or iphone, never had any issues just yanking it out.

I used it once a year or so back when my iPod did the same thing, but instead of recognizing the music it just remained an empty song list even though the data was there.

You are a lucky person.

It was fixed through reconnecting, but why would this happen to begin with? Does it write a new library file to the iPod when disconnecting or something?

I've lost data by not using the eject option in windows with thumbdrives. I've also toasted a couple too. I always eject now, or reboot and then eject if for whatever reason eject fails and I have nothing transferring/open.
