ALSO: What's a good typing speed assessor? There isn't one I've found that I'm completely happy with.

My idea of a perfect typing speed assessor:, a typing speed assessor should have big words, coherent sentences (predicting what word is coming next/sentence flow helps typing speed), a good amount of punctuation (very important, seeing as how most people here code), and the results shown to you should be in both words per minute and characters per minute. (Actually, I had always assumed that wpm was the same measurement as cpm (characters per minute), eg 6cpm=1wpm, but apparently you're actually measuring words typed per minute. Curse the person who made that unit a standard!)

I went to http://mtworld.com/keyboard/ and took the "laryngoscopy surgical report" test, because it has tons of big words in it. I ended up with 63 wpm. I got two capitalization errors and one spelling error ("eppiglottis"). I took other tests, with smaller words, and averaged about 85wpm. The difference is proooobably due to words being bigger in the laryngoscopy report.

Keep in mind this is typing when I'm focused and know exactly what I want to say.

Wuts ur typing speed?

This comes up because I'm learning a lot of new computer related things, and I want to improve my text-editing efficiency. To do this, I'm doing stuff like learning to use vim (configuring syntax highlighting, code completion, and using the dang thing), learning regular expressions, aaaaand increasing my typing speed. From what i've read, it doesn't take anything more than practice to get to a blazing fast (120-160) typing speed. Of course, I don't want to type so fast that I give myself carpal tunnel, so until I get a better workspace, I won't be practicing typing. (my chair has hydraulics, but I like to be closer to the screen. I have a shortish desk with a laptop on it, so between the chair having to fit a bit under the desk, looking at my screen, typing (on a laptop), and moving the mouse, there's no balance that's good all-around.

Just did the test (in order):

laryngoscopy surgical report : 0 spelling mistakes, 57 wpm
Nuclear Fusion : 1 spelling mistake, 68 wpm
Hamlet : 0 spelling mistakes, 71 wpm

I kept getting faster, don't know if that was me just warming up, or if the other texts had shorter words... So I'm not quite as fast as you are, but I'm still pretty proud of my results

Do you use the 10-finger system (I do )? Or some weird system like my dad uses that involves crossing, twisting and flipping the index and middle fingers? (He somehow manages to type faster than me, no idea how that's possible I mean, his fingers are so fat, it must require an immense amount of energy to accalerate that amount of mass at that speed. After a few calculations I realized it's physically improbable, and an anatomical impossibility.)

Psychiatric Consult Report: 1 spelling mistake, 60 wpm
Robert Frost Biography: 1 spelling mistake, 45 wpm
Nuclear Fusion: 1 spelling mistake, 1 missing word, 61 wpm

So I'm averaging about 55wpm. Didn't realize I was such a slow typer. :/

yeah... but that's WPM and not CPM, so it's completely variable. Someone should write a typing speed analyzer in DBPro

LOL! you should tell him that

My grandma taught typewriting classes. She could type at like 120 words per minute! From what I've read, I think it's just practice. More of a fitness thing than a finnesse thing. If I ever get good enough at programming to get some money, I'm definitely getting a better desk, chair, and wristpad, and then I'm setting aside a couple minutes a day to practice typing as fast as I can. I just really don't want to break my wrists typing xD

0 spelling mistakes in Hamlet? Are you sure about that?

I got 70wpm on Hamlet with two mistakes. One finger likes to jump ahead of the other.

61wpm on robert frost with 0 errors. I used to average 68wpm perfectly, but it is 5am and I have been without sleep for way too long.

Well if you count the word that I wasn't able to complete at the end due to the time running out, then it is 1 mistake Oh, Hamlet... *corrects post*

Make it 2 then

Ugh. So I'm trying to increase my typing speed today... Someone suggested typing songs in real time, aaand so I usually can make it more than halfway through the song before I get so far behind I lose track of the lyrics. I've also read that vim is great for fast text editing, so I'm trying to edit an html and a css file using vim... It's noot working that great. I'm typing way slower because I keep having to look back and forth between a reference manual and the actual editor. Whatever, it sounds like it'll help in the long run.

[edit]
If you don't know what vim is, it's basically a command line text editor, that is notoriously difficult to use, but also famously great for preforming complicated or repetitive tasks. Like so:

aaand so I'm trying to switch over to vim as my full time editor. There's a text insertion mode, but from what I've read, vim power users spend most of their time in command mode. (so the text editing capabilities of notepad would be in edit mode)

Well, I took your advice and explained to him why his fingers are inferior, and showed him my maths. And he gave me a lesson of quantum mechanics in return, proving my maths wrong... I accept my defeat.

OH ITS ON!
(will edit with the results)

[edit]
D: on the three minute laryngoscopy one I got 63 wpm, 4 spelling errors, and two capitalization errors. On the one minute one I got 64 wpm with 0 spelling errors. Dang! at least my results are consistent.

I'd hazard a guess that 65wpm seems to be the average for most of us.

I saw a guy at work once type faster than I could smash random keys, it was insane!

I've used the one on Facebook (and used to use it on Bebo) - my WPM was around 87 but randomly out of the blue I got it up to 94WPM But half the time I'm still around 85WPM cos of typos and being lazy. (I only get above 90 if I'm pumped full of my own adrenaline from listening to awesomeness or something. )

That random dip in the middle of the graph I think was me playing about or possibly doing it with one hand so it tainted my average.

Quote: "and I want to improve my text-editing efficiency"

You should try maintaining code like this xD - Having to routinely do the same things over and over on a keyboard without Ctrl+R really boosted my typing speed through the roof 6 years ago, and it's stuck. (Regardless of how horrible my coding was, I was definitely quick at doing it. )

Y'all are sooooooooooooooo slow. I got 3938 wpm on the 1 minute test on hamlet. No errors whatsoever. In yo' face!

Nah, seriously I got 22 wpm on the 1 minute one on hamlet with no mistakes. Yeah, I know I'm slow, when I have the time I'm going to take the 3 minute one.

Wanna know how I got 3989 wpm? With my ninja typing skills, that's how! No, seriously, I copied and pasted the text.

BTW, It took 30 minutes to write this post.

All alone in my room, haven't been outside since 1992.

yeah, it seems like with most typing tests I'm at a steady 85 wpm.

D&C Surgical Report: 28 Wpm
Hamlet: 33 wpm
Nuclear Fusion: 29 wpm
What is Medicine: 33 wpm
Average: 30 wpm

Not too bad concidering over the last year or so i've developed my own personal typing technique, still needs further development though.
the thing that kept me back on the Surgical report is that first, confusing word, i just stared at it for a good 5 seconds before i even attempting it.

All I tried was the Hamlet test once.

71wpm with 4 mistakes. Definitely not the best I can do, but seeing as I haven't really even been typing much lately, I'll take it.

I tried the medicine one from my iPhone, 27 net wpm with 0 errors. I can probably go faster, but it's difficult to do with the tiny screen. I displayed the text on my monitor so I could see it while I was typing. If I didn't have to keep glancing back and forth, I bet I could hit over 30 easily.

In typing class, I got up to 150 GWAM (good words a minute). But right after I finished the class I went back to typing with two fingers.
