So i am interested in bying Xquad etitor. From what i read about it, its like a game engine made in DBP. Correct me if i am wrong, but it says that if i own DBC, i can even modify the editors sourse code.

http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=view_product&id=2129

as i understand, the creators of this software dont officially support it anymore so i will have to figure it out on my own.

One thing i dont like about it is that the object placement is tile based takes away room for creativity, but hopefully i can figure out a way to change this if its true that you can modify the engine sourse code.

the reason this editor appeals to me because, i am a bad programmer and i am incapable of making such an engine. I did attempt to make a simple level editor but that kindof failed, and its tiering to code everything by hand and as a project gets bigger, the code becomes more confusing and at that scale its hard to go on without some kindof editor. Even most big games out there make editors like this for faster creation of their game.

Also any comments on the terrain editor? like how good is it and what are its pros and cons.
I downloaded the demo game treasure hunter, i understand that its just a demo and isnt supposed to be complex, but the top down view didnt really let me take a good look at how the terrain looks like.

also the screensots of the xquad editor are kindof small and its hard for me to judge it based on those small screenshots

Also i am wondering whats the terrain sytem in xquad is based on, like is it matrix based terrain, or something more real like meightmaps or 3d vertex manipulation of a model.

Also i am wondering if it supports .dbo and .x formats (i am certain it does i dont know why i asked that)

from what i seen so far on those tiny screenshots and the demo, this editor isnt fancy with graphics, Well for me its OK, Dark basic is too slow for good graphics and i actually like chunky 3D style of mid- late 90s, I just have a thing for it, like nostalgia or something

So If anyone here bought Xquad editor can you share your experiences pros and cons of this thing? or any other stuff i should know about before i buy it?

also, if anyone has any better screenshots of Xquad, id love for you to post them, maybe even if anyone is working on any projects on it, you are welcome to show off your stuff.

You should check out this thread: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=180821&b=19 It explains quite a bit if you read to the bottom.

i see. so turns out this thing is just not very popular. it does sound like a neat program tho. I did read some stuff on it on the forums, whatever i could find. I think people are afraid to buy it because there is little info on it.

I think it's the code of the game it generates that you can edit rather than the engine source code itself.

Well from what i read so far, i make that you can also edit the engine code too. people talked about stuff like they can edit the sourse to their own needs.

Another thing i am wondering about is if you cam maybe modify it to your own liking. can i still upload my version of this engine for free?

From the product page: "Please note that X-Quad Editor is NOT compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7."

yeah its fine, i have a windows XP mashine just for it. Reacentley i started getting my motivation back a bit, and once i buy xquad in a day or two, i will start exhamining it, its possibilities, I have actually an entire windows xp computer, built just for making games with dark basic, and maybe stuff i might find interesting.

I honestly can't see why you'd want to buy it, especially being as most of us have upgraded to beyond XP. I guess if it's for personal use only, sure why not.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

Actually, according to w3schools, XP still has a bigger share than any other operating system. Windows 7 has virtual XP mode right?

I wouldnt want to do dark basic stuff trough a virtual drive. besides, i have a bunch of game making software that only worked on XP. so i still have the dark basic mashine which runs XP.

I still havent bought the Xquad editor yet. I have a lot foing on in my life now. but once i get all my business worked out, i am gonna buy this no matter what people say. Besides i have money in a paypal account and paypal is almost non existant in russia where i live (we have our own online money payment software which dosent accept paypal really

I really wish more people had this thing. I think its the negative attitude that keeps people from buying it. I think if more people bought it and had positive attitude about it, There would be more effort to keep supporting it and make new releases.

@PAGAN

I would agree, I wish there were more users of this software. Compared to FPSC, which has a large and helpful user group. Xquad editer has next to none and it has no tutorials that I have come across to help anyone starting out.

Also the guy who made the software I believe sold the rights of the software to TGC and there is no sign of it ever being updated.

so i bought the software. I am waiting to get my order processed. kinda taking long... Xquad seemes to be just what i need for my project which is pretty simple so far. just a linear game with simlple low poly 3d graphics, nothing fancy. since there are no examples of what Xquad can do I will play around with it for a bit and write a review, maybe post some screens and stuff. I am still curios to see if the rumour about the actual Xquad code being open to edit is true.

Hopefully if things go right, i will attract more attention to this software.

While i was buying it, i took a look at leadwerks engine. I think i might buy that too and learn it paraless to making my game. I still remember visual basic i learned in school so maybe i can some day do stuff with Leadwers, since its the cheapest engine with really nice graphics

well i bought it and its actually very crappy in terms of the world creation. It does its job yes but its really frustrating and difficult to work with. On the other hand, i guess i am glad i bought it, i could study the way it works. And its crappiness inspired me to attempt making something better. I recentley started learning vertex manipulation and ill start off making a simple 1 tile terrain editor. and hopefully if i keep at it, some day this might evolve into something better than Xquad.

XQuad probably hasn't been updated in years, which is bad enough, but in terms of DBPro years, well it pre-dates things like advanced terrain, maybe even Sparky's collision DLL. Really, it was made to please people hoping to make Quake style games.

Learn from it, but I would always advise people to make their own editor - besides being useful, the time saving things that you add are well worth it. For example, when writing a platform game and editor, I found that having quick and easy hot keys for selecting blocks saves a ton of time - and having automatic neighboring blocks. It's stuff that you can only do in your own editor, and probably only realise once your making your own editor. Writing an editor can be daunting, but it actually reduces the 'daunt' associated with game development.

I'd recommend taking a look at some of the free engines first:
