Hi guys, myself and Red Eye are starting this petition to remove the bar at the top of the window when you scroll down the page.
We, and others we've talked to, agree that it's an irritation and gets in the way of our forum browsing.
The bar would be perfectly fine if it appeared after clicking a button or tab manually, but the auto-sliding in function is a complete nuisance.

If you agree then please help by posting in this thread and voting against the bar!

Disclaimer: This isn't a dig at TGC or whoever does the forum coding etc. It's merely to see/retrieve the forum opinion on the new bar feature.

Doesn't for me, it hides it after clicking, but then it drops back down next time I scroll or go to a new page.

I didn't see this thread and started a new one.
Maybe it'll get more attention that way.

The bar is not so bad, but that pop-up whenever I try to copy text is. I thought I had spyware there for a minute.

If you have ABP or noscript installed, just block apture.com and it goes away.

That kind of intrusive stuff is why I have noscript and ABP installed in the first place.

While I can get rid of it, I don't see why I should have to or even why it's there in the first place. I get the little definition boxes, they're quite useful and a good idea imo, but the scroll bar should go.

An integer walks into a bar, the barman says "Sorry, we don't serve your type here"

Hmm, it's a solution but I shouldn't have to install things to view a forum without getting popups and bars appearing.
I'm also not a fan of installing things that check the page contents as I access things like online banking (I know it says you can add pages that are not checked, like your bank, but you can't really trust them 100%.) >.<

To assume that I am copying text to post on whatever social site you like is just wrong. Bad idea. I know it's your forum and I'm just using it, but make annoying enough and you'll be using it by yourself.

Same here. I'll definately support the petition, but the bar doesn't have to be completely removed. They should just leave it off as default.

Yeah, it needs to be gone. Super lame. Putting "127.0.0.1 www.apture.com" in the HOSTS file makes it go away, but I would like to see a more permanent option to remove it.

Try this:

- go to the Apture website
- scroll down to the bottom
- click on 'Opt out'
- on the next screen, click the 'Opt out' button

Did this help?

Cheers

I wouldn't doubt that it'll still track you though. I recommend adding an entry to your HOSTS file. TGC, if you want to track users, use something like http://www.openwebanalytics.com/

That way you won't be handing out data on your own users.

when u highlight text, this thing does a search, loads results (the "learn more" is a progress bar), including images, and presents. very annoying.

from the apture website: "keep readers glued to your page" = the quickest way to make sure i avoid it.

the opt-out + blocking mentioned above seems to be working fine, so here i am

Hmmm I don't get it, my Internet Security must be doing its job at keeping spam away. XD

Either that or it doesn't work in Opera.

Annoying indeed. Opted out as suggested.

Kind of disappointed that TGC would lump this kind of spamminess into the site. Presumably they're only doing it for some kind of affiliate program / visitor analytics? (either of which is meh)

Absolutely annoying. Makes the site look like something hosted on a free service. Very unprofessional.

Letting them harass you brings in money for TGC if i remember correctly.

I wouldn't mind the bar at the top if it was hidden by default and only opened when clicking the tab at the side, but the search thing when highlighting text sucks. Was the Google ads not bringing in enough revenue?

I don't find it intrusive at all. I just minimized the top thing, and it's no longer and issue, and the Learn More option doesn't get in the way. BUT, I will never use it because I find pointless, so don't care what happens either way.

I agree, and I don't see the point of it.

For anybody who wants it gone use adblockplus.
Using this, I didn't even know the website had that bar.

I made it disappear the way people were talking about...so I don't really care.

But I imagine TGC might care that everyone is trying to get rid of it so I figured I'd chime in.

Exactly what I thought till I selected the text in that quote - except it didn't look like a "bar" to me, more like a pop-up.

But, yes, it is very annoying - and so is the fact that I have to find out how to stop it (i.e. I'll have to read the thread again ). If I'd been asked first it would have been a different matter.

Add my vote to the petition. If I want clutter I can add it myself.

Doesn't help me. The pop-ups still happen.

Edit2

Ah, it's gone now.

I must have tested it too soon after opting out.

But I'd still like to know what this "bar" is that everyone's talking about.

I don't care about the bar. It goes away fairly quickly but I do find it annoying when you highlight text it brings up a box that says "Learn More" and if you click it or accidentally click it searches for whatever you highlighted.

if this is a case of understanding user trends across the site, why not try smarter stats enterprise?

eitherway yeah its a sudden thing, something like that deserves a mass email informative tbh, I too as others thought the site had been compromised...

dont find it useful, actually prefer using the google thing to find threads, I still think the site should be broken apart into old and new forum, like all posts pre-2010 places in archive, and updated modern posts keps here or ina new forum... would make it all nice and clean...

I opt for it being removed and something else take its place... its not nice to be sheeped into something, I am a black sheep dont like following the flock...
