Recently, I passed the CHSPE - a test which, if passed, counts as the legal equivalent of a high school diploma. So, I've basically dropped out of highschool, and am set to take classes at the community college next semester. That is in a while though, and in the meantime, I have a heap of free time on my hands. I really don't want to sit idle, and I want to start on some sort of programming project, but motivation is kind of hard (with a not-so-great workspace and annoyed parents), aaand I'm not totally sure /what/ to do.

Right now I'm working through some textbooks, and trying to progam an online top-down shooter with OpenGL... but neither of those directly translate into money.

Soo... if anyone has ideas of how to spend my time more productively, please post 'em!

Tell me if there's a broken link to images in a thread I post, and I'll fix 'em.

Well somthing cool to do would be to create a transforming fractal screen saver, but that's not really a money maker. If you wanted money for your work then I would develop a game for a moblie device (android's a good one) as the market is relatively fresh on that front. Same with net books.

Also if you can't find anything at all then I would learn another programming language as it will pay off in the future.

My software never has bugs, it just develops random features.

I don't mean to be a downer but if you weren't motivated enough to finish High School the normal way what makes you think you can find the motivation to program?

Uh, perhaps he was motivated to finish early. High school sucks. I'd say good riddance to high school.

If you want to work for someone, the best way to do it is to show you can finish projects. See Scraggle's thread a on this very board

Yeah, Jerico's got a good point there, try finding a way to "publicize" yourself. Try to show someone what you can do with programming. Usually if you want attention like this, though, you'll need to have a few games out on the market already. Android/iOS is definately a good way to do that.

This sig can be yours, too!

If you can't think of anything to program then stop!
Go and do something else interesting and you'll soon find the inspiration to code really cool programs you might never have thought of otherwise.
It wont do you any good banging your head against the keyboard, if anything it will make you hate programming.

It's very hard to make money from anything on your own when you start out, so just try to get stuff finished and out there, get people playing your games or using your software whatever it is. Then you will build a reputation and be spurred on by people taking an interest in your work; that is far more valuable than money.
