Anyone know of a good place to get programs (paid/free) to help with creating game content (maps,levels,sfx, etc). I have many tools but the more the merrier since all the tools I have have there weaknesses. Also I know about download.com and the like but you would be searching forever there.

I am more interested in programs created with the likes of DBP but not specifically. An example of the kind of thing I am looking for is http://www.deved-portal.com/smd3d/. That kind of thing. New, not well known and cheap

Any type of tool will do!

NP Stormwire,

Personally I use, Ac3d, Fragmotion, Paint.net, Gimp, PhotoShop, FPSC, Expression Design, Expression Encoder, FPSC OneSource (an app I am working on), and loads of random tuts from the internet.

Get a grip of one aspect at a time so you don't overwhelm yourself.

At the moment I am using Fragmotion, Silo, Blender, Gimp and some random tools I found in my searches online. I probably should have said that in the first post lol

Woah, Silo looks great. There's one feature I've been interested in... it takes a high poly mesh and a low poly mesh (of the same object), and "exports" the high-poly mesh as a bump map for the low-poly mesh. Does Silo have this?

Also, I've found that learning scripting stuff in Blender and Gimp helps immensely. Gimp is great, but it's not great for user-freindly batch-editing. however if you're familiar with scripting usage, you could, say, take 300 png files, shrink them, layer them, and export them as an animated .gif.

Tell me if there's a broken link to images in a thread I post, and I'll fix 'em.

I wouldn't think so. I haven't delved that deep into it yet. I am learning Fragmotion at the mo. Silo is an amazing modeling tool from what I have learned of it. It maybe a bit expensive for some though.

You could look up Truespace. It is free but they really screwed up the interface with the last release. I used Truespace from version 2 up but just cant use the last version.

Silo seems like a poor mans Zbrush me thinks. That is why I bought it. In many ways though I am finding it better than Zbrush!

I think Melody from Nvidia does what you are asking about, haven't tried it yet, but that is basically what it says it does.

Silo is amazing. It's very well designed and out of all 3D apps I've tried it has felt the most natural in terms of editing a mesh. Some of the best stuff I've made have been done in Silo, but I still need to buy a full copy myself. I plan on buying the cheap version soon.

I think what you're asking about can be done in ZBrush and 3D Coat, from the sounds of it, the same for Silo, essentially all you're doing is displacement mapping and saving it into a normal map. But I think this is a feature of the fully priced version.

In fact, your answer is right here:

if you are willing to spend 20 bucks and up for a challenge buy XQuad editor! its possible to make a decent game in it just the way you have to go about doing so is really screwed up. Also working a bit with Xquad editor really inspired me to make something better. i started to believe that i can write a better engine. Maybe it will do the same for you lol. (i am not joking about the insparation part, it was worth 20 bucks to get me inspired lol)

@PAGAN

Could you add a vid to youtube showing Xquad at work? I have been hankering to have a look at it just for the fun of it. There really isn't much about it around here.

@Neuro Fuzzy

I had a look at the normal and displacement map tools. They are there but they keep crashing the program on me arg! Some people on the Silo forums can use them well so you might be one of the lucky ones.
