Okay, so last year, I got a brand new computer, and with it, an HP w2338h widescreen monitor. Yesterday (May 17th), my computer let me know that my warranty with HP had expired. Then, this morning, I turn my computer on, and my monitor decided to go kaput (it made a loud buzzing sound, then a short hiss, then a sound I can only describe as an airlock closing). It seems this happens to a lot of the w2338h monitors from HP. HP customer support suggested I -- wait for it! -- buy a new monitor (from them, of course), or re-up my 1-year warranty. What. The. Crap.

Yes, I know you're thinking "but Matt, you have the technical adeptness of Jeremy Clarkson weilding a screwdriver!" Well, I want to try anyway. So my question is, how do I open this bad boy up? I Googled to no end, but the videos and other links gave advice that didn't make sense for how this model is built. Do LCD monitors have fuses, like everything else does? Will I do more harm than good in attempting this?

If I do need to replace it, I need an LCD widescreen monitor, 23" or bigger (but not as huge as the 46" HDTV my computer is connected to right now... this is silly). It has to be 1080p, with stats equal to or greater than the HP w2338h, and it must have an HDMI output. Any suggestions?

Here's the monitor I have:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7127955&sku=A204-2706

I got it for $190, but for some reason the price has gone up. :/

In terms of opening a monitor, try getting your heaviest hammer and bashing the back of your monitor endlessly until the case is off.

Or even better, a chisel AND a hammer.

Chance of your monitor surviving: 1%

You bash it against the back of your monitor until the case is off. (A chisel as recommended as well)

By the way you've described the sounds it made - I would hazard a guess that a capacitor has gone pop, they can make some real weird hissing noises, pop, whistle etc etc.

Look for a little thing that looks like a drinks can, with SOFT white stuff leaked out, or burnt out... I put SOFT in caps because you shouldn't confuse it with the white glue/paint that is often used - the white stuff from a capacitor will be more like Oreo cream.

For a replacement, I'd just go to eBuyer and see what they have on offer - they often have some remarkable deals for monitors.

Thanks Xplosys for the guide, couldn't have opened it without that. and cheers Van, you were spot on, definitely some puss in my monitor. I can change a fuse without detonating my apartment, but anything circuit board-ish, i'm not that brave lol. Time to find a new monitor. I really liked my old one :/

Once again, look at this. I've had it for about a year now and it still works fine.

(I don't think it's the exact model I have, though, it looks a little larger and slightly different. I think mine is around 23".)

I think you should give it a go - you really have nothing to loose.

If it's a decent sized capacitor, then it should be really easy to replace it. They only have 2 legs, and are designed to be soldered by hand, so I say grab a soldering iron, whip out the cap and order a replacement online, then see how it works.
I have had to replace caps on motherboards, and it usually does the trick. Considering how much money it could save you to fix your old monitor, I think you would be crazy not to give it a try.
