I see the news is on about Solar flares and magnetic storms and not what hitting us in the next few years.

So I thought!

Could I live a week or longer without any electronic equipment, and if not what would I sacrifice in the storms when they hit.

keep. (switch off and protect, not that it be of much use if the rest of the country did not protect the infrastructure.)
the computer.
the router.
the cable box.
the dab radio.
the sound system.
the freezer, ice box.
heating system.
the car. (
the cell phone.

lose. (keep it running and maybe destroy it)
the TV would have to take the hit.

The above is base on whether I can be A.... to get up and do it.

So how about you what would go to great length to protect from the storms?

Hell naww!

Well, if all electronic equipment got solar fried, I think I'd pick up mechanics or something. The day after my computer stopped working I'd go to amazon.com and order a bunch of gear- oh wait...

uhhh yeah but I'd probably pick up some other logic/sciencey thing. Gears seem nice and tangible. Maybe I'd help construct guns and what not and deal arms to the warring remnants of humanity.

I'd have to buy a shedload of Lego, or Mechano, or something like that to keep me occupied. Or looting - I could loot some nice new gear for when power is restored.

I have my old box of K'NEX downstairs, I't pack that out to keep myself busy.

When I don't have power, I do word searches or I throw together some jigsaw puzzles. I could live.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

Well chances are, you'd here news of an Australian boy being found dead under a pile of leaves.

I'd have to restring my bro's guitar (lefty) if I wasn't going to die of boredom.

I would keep on playing my electrical guitar, but without the distortion and shiz. Bwééééééééééééé.
My metalsongs would become acoustic metal songs. Hehehhehe. Maybe the start of a new metalstyle. Hehehheheheh.
On teh other hand, I'd restart my oil paintings and comic book drawings. And, maybe buy me some Legos. Also keep solving word puzzles. I would have no problem keeping busy. Never got any problems with that.
When I was younger, we didnt have all that high tech stuff people have these days. And still, we had a lot of fun doing things without the need of a computer.

Cheers

Think globally. When the power is out, all the power is out. Everyone will be trying to survive. How many days before people run out of food, water, get bored and go looking for more? That shoot-em-up you played the day before the power went out is about to become real. Practice people... practice.

I'd be totally useless without electricity. My toothbrush has batteries and my blanket plugs into the wall, lol.

I can see it now. A power outage hits; Matt looking queerly at his toothbrush wondering how on Earth he can brush his teeth now.

I have often thought about loading up my ruck and heading to the woods anyways....

Yeah this would really suck, but if I had to, I would have no problems surviving.

no water? then we're all dead in a week.
If we had no electronics, I'd have to look for a different line of work.

I went about 2 weeks without my laptop earlier this year. Left town and forgot my charger at home. But I had TV still.

I could probably survive. I've gone months without the Internet. I'm an active person, so I'd either just workout more, work on my car, or just sit in the garage and build stuff.

Glad you like my radio, lol

But I tried it. I had to sneak on to my iPod to catch up on emails 3 days in.

Actually yeah, after electronics got fried, radio would probably be the first important thing back up. We'd have a lot of new radio-ppl, and people would be grabbing for parts. I don't think that any big nations would dissolve though. The military would still be functional. (I can't imagine what'd happen on the supercarriers and similar ships)

We'd all survive but then be bored to death. Yesterday the power went off for about a minute and I freaked out (was in the middle of playing Half-Life 2). I screamed like Uzis long answer.

We had stuff like this there in case something bad would happen but we decided not to use it.

So, no...

If this solarwind fallout occurs, it would be a great test on humanity...on hour morality, social structures and talents in problem solving...if we start to steal, kill etc. we suck

Our house however has gas capsules and enough gear to make a pretty good shelter in fallout cases. In the worst case when people become animals ...I guess it would be better to have almost nothing and live a nomadic live...that way no one wants to steal from you.

spent a month in the Himalayas, though I still had my phone, all I used it for was gps tracking so I could map the route when I got home and listening to mp3's whenever I needed comforting. I'm pretty sure there was a gap of about a week when I was so remote I had no opportunity to recharge the phone (and too tight to buy solar panels), so I'd say yes.

no wait, I was still using my digital camera..

oh, and my watch, but it's solar powered, does that still count?

Ok, you pass! Can't say I've ever gone as far as being without a torch for more than a day or two camping.

Looking forward to the apocalypse though. I intend to be part of the mad biker gang, like in the original Dawn of the Dead, pillaging and looting.

And I don't think humanity would survive true chaos. I think the majority of us are only good because of the consequences of us being caught for doing wrong!

See ya in my crosshair then

Thats actually not exactly true. As you can see in most post apocalyptic movies and which is actually true...there is only ONE evil guy that leads a lot of weaker people. These weak people aren't exactly agressive, they are just scared of the leader person.

As there are only few "evil" persons...there are only few heroes aswell.

Hey, I learned this in school, so I don't remember the countrys....but in wartime, there was this one prison. The wardens there kept a group of prisoners in a safer building...those who where rebels...without these people, most of the other prisoners almost didn't put up a fight.

Yeah...my english appears a bit simple again...I hope you understand though

This summer I will be spending a month in Malawi, doing some aid work. I will be out of touch with the technology world for more than a week, and in all honesty I'm dreading it... I mean, where will I be without my much loved iPod to wake me up, my kettle, my computer and most terribly... these forums

Good luck to me

I go a week or weekend with very little electricity every couple months. And I assure you, it's far more fun than my house full of electricity.

We have a house in some back woods. Though we do have electricity there of course, it's seldom on. Generally we are sitting around a campfire drinking beers and out shooting guns. Heck we've even had an entire power outage a week up there. It didn't make much of a difference.

People will find ways outside of the internet to entertain themselves.

If all the power goes out...I'd consider it a great opportunity to go looting for a camping trip. A quite possibly extended camping trip with plenty of munitions...

What to do to stop this. Become a crazy old person and buy a ton of rubber. Cover your entire room the protect against the flares! Since electronic waves cannot pass through rubber. But I would have my guitar with me.
