Note that this is only free if you already own a domain name.
for a free one of those, look here: http://freedns.afraid.org/

edit: actually looking again at that site I don't think it does give you a free domain address, not sure though.

Visit my blog for any and all info on what I do coding wise.

Once I get a free host though how do I get my server working remotly on the host.

I can do the FTP part but I'm not sure how I actually get it all to run remotely.

Free hosting generally doesn't allow remote hosting.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

with an ftp (box), you already have a location to point your domain to and have your web pages / content load from there...

I am offering both URL's as well as FTP accounts for all buddies on here as I now have a domain I no longer make use of, all you need to do it upload your content and redirect your domain name to that storage space while using a mask to hide the end location simples lol

Or you can do it the RIGHT way and use DNS.

Not really. It takes no more time than web forwarding would.

Use nameservers. Most hosts issue nameservers. If not, creating the records in the DNS panel (which most domains offer) is just as easy, you just point them to your server's IP.

It doesn't point to a folder, DNS points to an IP. The webserver's responsible for parsing the address that comes through on the browser and displaying the correct page.

I registered a domain name with FreeHosta but can't seem to get my avatar and signature images to link there properly.

Sometimes it'll work for a single refresh but most of the time nothing.

Edit: I figured it out... they don't allow hotlinking with the free hosting plan.

It works for me once I visited your site. It's a feature called anti-leech or some similar name. Check your hosting control panel.

For this help, you must promise me to never use comic sans.

Thank you.

Aw, Comic Sans is my favorite font.

I checked their forums and it's always off for free hosting because they were having a lot of problems with people abusing the system. It'll cost me 35 bucks to get it to work... oh well.
