Awesome. I have a malamoot and a shi-tzu, the malamoot being 20 times the size of the other. It's so funny when they play with each other.

We'd be lost without our dog. Not only is she a part of our family, but is my partner with our Search & Rescue unit. Blue Heeler/Boarder Collie/Australian Shephard. She has one blue eye and one brown eye, which my kids think is cool.

Here's a picture of my dog Sandy and one of our birds I took a few years ago. Don't have any digital pictures of her when she was a puppy, but she was the size of the hat

She's turning 9 this August.

This is our 7 week old puppy, Katie. She's quite a handful, she's a Chihuahua, very small.

She's pretty smart, too.

We just got two dogs here at my house. A pure bred long haired chihuahua, and a pure bred long haired mini dachshund. The dachs is mine(well, my ol lady's as soon as she gets back out here), and the chihuahua is my step-mom's. They're a bit of a horror story turned good. We found them in the dumpster outside our apartment unit. We got a hold of the original owner(they're chipped), to find out they had been sold to someone else here at the apartments 5 weeks ago. They were covered in urine and feces, and emaciated badly. Now they're doing a lot better, getting back to being trained, etc. We love them, and the folks that abused them are being prosecuted, evicted, and looked at by child services. They managed to avoid a felony by lying and saying they dumped them by the creek, rather than admitting to throwing them in the dumpster in the middle of the night just before collection morning.

At any rate, they're with us now and they're happy, doing a lot better.

@ Vent

Nice dog. Black lab by the looks of her. She looks healthy and happy (or is that hungry looking at the bird LOL).

@ Crispex

Chihuahua's are very smart. Your dog has nice colors on her face. They look so cute with those wide eyes that look at you and say "please hold me".

@ Insanity Complex

As a dog handler, I hate hearing stories like that. But good on you both for taking them in and giving them a good home.

Not really actually.
I have four dogs, three of which are chihuahuas. They have all been taking training classes for about three years now, and are all so incredibly stupid.
For the most part, all dogs are actually more intelligent than people realize. However, chihuahuas are definitely NOT known for being one of the smarter breeds. They aren't dumb, they just aren't one of the smart dog breeds.

Here is the only dog I like in our house. This one isn't one of the chihuahuas.

There's your problem. Training classes. You have to train them yourself. Not to mention, Chihuahua's have a very high amount of energy, so you need to be patient and calm. You've got to start when they are just a tiny puppy. They are considered #68 on the top 100 smartest dogs. Not the highest, but still up there.

Yeah, she's a cute one. Like I said, she acts innocent but she's quite mischievous. She's really smart, learns things quickly. We've had her for a little over 2 weeks, and she's really doing well. Our 14 year old German Shepherd / Collie mix had to be put down, she had cancer and was suffering quite badly. 4 months later we decided we needed to bring a new family member in.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

So does anyone here have a real dog or do you all just have tiny little rodents that fit in purses?!

I love dogs, but I'm not sure if I could own one. I grew up with dogs in the family, and was there when they were inevitably put down. What will always bug me is dogs rarely die of natural causes. We make the decision ourselves to kill them when we decide it's right, based on whatever illness they have.

As much as I love 'em, I don't want to watch another dog slowly get old and crippled in it's twilight years, until it can hardly get out of it's basket, and then decide for myself to terminate it's life, without it having a say. It's very easy for people to say it's the kind thing to do, but really, most of the time people put their pets down to avoid their own personal pain at watching them suffer. It's for their benefit. They just convince themselves, the arthritis ridden pet, who's in discomfort, and a bit sad he can't walk easily any more, is desperate and pleading to be murdered.

My legs are sore, and I may piss on the carpet. So PLEASE KILL ME NOW!! You're kidding yourself.

Sorry to post a depressing rant like that! It's just a strong feeling I have had for many years and this thread just made me think of it again.

The thing is though, being part of a 'pack dynamic' they're always going to try and act like they're OK, even when they're in horrendous pain

My parents recently put their ~15 year old Yorkshire terrier down. She was in a pretty bad state - she had fallen down a slope and hurt her back pretty badly. She was yelping in pain when she turned over in her bed and could barely walk. Far too old to operate on (she probably wouldn't survive the anaesthetic). When they reach that kind of state, you can't really continue. Yeah, sure, it eases your own conscience as well - but I'm pretty sure when it's that bad they're probably relieved too

Kind of reminds me of this: Dog crawls home to owner after tornado with 2 broken legs. They are so desperate to stay 'with it' (and remain loyal) that they put themselves through immense pain either just to do the normal day-to-day activities, or to get back to you

In my defense, I never would have had a small dog except for the given circumstances.

I still want a pit bull...they're my favorite dogs

@David R, I agree there are definitely exceptions. It's just in my experience, it's always been a close call. Once my mum contemplated putting one of our dogs down because she wasn't eating and was getting very weak, while also suffering from arthritis. The vet was prepared to put her down, but when my mum mentioned she wasn't eating, he finally suggested an appetite booster. After that, she lived for a good 9 months until she got poorly again and was put down.

@Insanity Complex, regardless of my babbling, congrats on your new doggy. It should be a great companion for the kids as they grow up.

My dog is difficult to photograph because she usually looks like a black blob in any photos of her. She is a WVBD(West Virginia Black Dog). But here is another canine in my yard.

A lot of people are afraid of her just because of her size, but she is very sweet and loves everyone she meets.
