The Rapture

Developed By Bugsy

FPSC X9

Story: May 21st, 2011. The day that the world was supposed to end. It had been another long saturday at work, and once again, you were one of the last ones there. Suddenly, rumbles shake the earth, walls begin to collapse, and running on instinct alone, you dive into the supply closet at work, and tuck yourself in for a long night's cower. Upon emerging, the city of Rockport is... different than you recall, and no one can be found anywhere. It is strangely, yet peacefully desolate. soon you'll find, however, that peace is nowhere to be found.

please, leave me some constructive criticism. yes I know you can see there is no road past the bus in some of the screens, but obviously the player can not reach that viewpoint, or get past the bus.

Wolf approves and likes Bugsy's improved skills.

Wolf does also think that swapping the building textures is necessary

Wolf likes the nicely developed city.

And he has no apparent reason to type like this.

Well, seeing as though you started this while we were talking on Skype...
It looks great for the overall amount of time you've put into it (which is...3-4 hours, so far?)!

In the second screen, I notice little to no debris on the rooftop right by the two buildings leaning on each other. You should probably add a little bit of that. Maybe some paper overlays on the streets to give it that abandoned big-city look.

Edit: Le Shorte was beat to commenting by Wolf.
Le Shorte is disappointed.
And he has no reason to be typing like this.

(Just had to do it.)

Outdoor Buildings need a bit of work, as said above, but interiors look ace!

you sure cramming this thing with dynamic overlays won't crank up the lag?

and won't they look ugly?

Are you aiming to get this done by October 21st, the date of the new 'recalculated' Rapture?!!!

I like the look of this, the 'leaning towers' are a nice touch

Looks good, but I think you should put something like a crosswalk to break up that intersection.

Good story.. quick thinking on that one. I like it. Everyone gone but you, huh? Boy, sucks to be you!

I can't wait to see what happens next. I've always wondered and since I figure I'll still be around, I'm up for a little practice.

I couldn't realize you can make kind of these levels.

But remember that this can improve too and if you improve this then I can tell you improve. There is no stop for improving,so never think you improved your game enough.

Looks better than WWC! night time is pretty overused in city levels though maybe turn it to day time and it'll be more interesting.

I agree, building textures are a bit sucky. They need to look less cartoony, for lack of a better word and more post-rapture.

If I had better building textures I'd use them.

also, thanks, I hope it looks better than WWC, because this isn't aimed at as large of an audience. It's more for those with perfect computers. the skybox will be changed to an early morning sky, but let's also remember, I can't make skyboxes, so if anyone's willing to help, I'd be ecstatic.

I think you need to make yards for some buildings.

And you can use segments to make buildings.
If you download gimp then you can edit textures and can use Burn tool then you will get the textures for darker levels.

using segments to make buildings will make for an unbelievably high polycount. I'm sorry have our guns, but a skilled level designer considers optimization. I can't just add unlimited detail.

Because you are using pre-made models I said that.
Do you know what I do?
I open the models in a 3D model editor program then removes everything which the player wont see them so if you play my games you can see same models but higher FPS just because removing extra parts.
My games will run faster because I can edit models but as I saw no new models in your levels then I realized you don't know any modelling so for having variety and because of there aren't lots of buildings for download(just Cosimc's and few from models packs) then I told you to use segments for better variety.

^ PaYaM has a good point, ex. if you delete the back sides of buildings or delete the bottoms of debris piles, cars, etc. it could help a little.

I thought I commented on this though
Awesome work as usual ^_^

sorry, have our guns, but the backs of the majority of my buildings only have 1 face as it is to save polys. I'm using JZ's buildings, which are optimization concious, and yet still my polycount is well over what I want it to be.

but then again, this isn't WWC, and I'm not as concerned, so I'm a little... no, a LOT more lenient about how many polys can go into the maps.

It looks quite good. Though why are the boards stacked perfectly like that? With an obvious recently-made fence? Would that mean there are other survivors? But if there were, wouldn't there be other signs of them?

These are mighty fine pictures you got here Bugster!

How about adding a little more variation in the lights, because right now the screens show a 'monotonous colour variation?' For example a small lights of contrasting or different colours?

About the last screen (as mentioned by Le Shorte) how about 'dirtying' the walls up a bit, because at the moment they look kind of bare.

By the way if you need help in optimizing buildings I can help you with that!!

the room is supposed to be clean. It's a fancy hotel. I'm going to instead add some paintings that are hanging incorrectly, to give the appearance of being rattled by explosions and stuff.

I know it's hard to understand why I do what I do if I don't tell the "whole" story, but I don't want to give it away.

I can relate to that. It's hard to strike a balance between revealing just enough to show progress, and not revealing too much about your game's storyline/plot before it's released.

In outside parts we can see destructed buildings but in that test room of level 2 everything is okay.
I think if you use destructed things in level 2 then it will be coordinate.

Dibs on that big pillar in the center of the first screen, after I take out other enemies, though, so I'm not exposed on 3 sides. Before that, I'll take the bar.

It's really great.
I think it is really necessary to edit your WWC because you have the ability to make it better.

And the lighting is nice in this screen(But the stairs are on the air ) :

That picture looks very out of place - it's far too small and the walls are too bare. It looks like something that could hang in my living room.. but mabye not in a huge mansion lobby. Surely if one painting was going to take up that wall, it would be huge?

I also think the black rug looks out of place. I think it should have a similar pattern to the circular one, so that they complement each other.

This project will be put on permanent hiatus until I finish with my entry to the "Defy the Odds" competition, and can be bothered to work with this again. Right now, though, I need to focus on the competition project. I'm sure you're probably having this very question right now:

"Why don't you use this as your competition entry"

simple, this is made to have levels much like WWC's so that I can get back into the swing of WWC's design, my project for the competition will be somewhat of a departure from my normal style, let's just say. I'll ensure you that it's not something that fans of my gameplay style will find boring however, It's just that the outdoors levels will be a little bit differently developed. expect a WIP for it sometime in the next two months!"
