Hey everyone! I just wanted to show you all my improved plasma speaker. Here's the video:

For those of you who are interested in it's functionality, here's a quick description of how it works, and what the circuit looks like:

Virtual Ground

The "virtual ground" section creates a third potential at half the supply voltage (in this case, 6V). R1 and R2 split the voltage in half, and that is put through an impedance converter so that voltage can't sink or rise depending on it's load. This is required because the audio amplifier requires a bipolar source to operate. The audio input is connected to this virtual ground, which means the signal coming from your Ipod or whatever is shifted up by 6 volts.

Audio Amplifier

Not much to discuss here, this is a typical configuration of the OPAMP which will amplify the signal that's inputted by the ratio between R3 and R4. In this case by a factor of 10.

AC-Coupling

Since our outputted signal is still based on the virtal ground, it will be offset by 6 volts. Therefore it is passed through an AC-coupling to filter out any DC voltages.

Squarewave generator with pulse width modulation

The TL494 is simply a squarewave generator that will change the duty cycle according to the input voltage. This means that our music will be modulated onto the squarewave signal.

Output stage with spark

Here we connect the modulated squarewave to a power MOSFET so the coil can be driven at high current. In my case a peak value of 16 Amps. For the spark gap I got myself a car ignition coil, and am able to generate 20 kV with it. A flyback transformer or something similar will do as well.

And that's it! enjoy

I don't care how good it sounds...it's freakin' plasma!

Very nice! I've seen a few other videos of these. They are quite neat.

This is very cool! Is it how most/all speakers work?

Hehe, did I hear someone shouting "Alex" at the end of the video?

That's pretty amazing...I'm going to have to look into how it does that. Thanks for "sparking" my interest!

No, this is highly unorthodox.

@ jasonhtml - Thanks

@ AutoBot - If by speakers you mean our normal audio speakers, then no But yeah, all plasma speakers will in some way, shape or form have a modulated square wave transformed by a coil. Thanks!

@ Yodaman Jer - haha xD yeah, my dad called me at the end of the video, forgot to cut that bit out... Thanks, if you have any further questions, I'll be happy to help!

There's always someone from the forums doing an interesting project. I think we deserve a separate board for home projects, it would be a really cool board!

Is there a practical application for this? That's not a offensive comment. I'm genuinely curious as to whether you could practically use this technique to solve a real problem?

Holy Crap!
Is the audio coming from that Arc?

Problem: No Plasma
Problem Solved: Have Plasma, Plasma emitting sound!

Just watched the video, and y'know I work at a Electrical's shop, and we sell "professional units" that sound crappier than this!

I'm just wondering, how can plasma create sounds, I always thought plasma was a beam of electrons, and that sound is made by vibrations in molecules. If someone would care to explain

Well plasma causes particle excitation, I'm guessing you manipulate that to make noise.

It's amazing how layered it sounded. Have you tried anything more complex? I'd like to see if it can pick out say, drums, vocals, etc in a band.

Why doesn't the sound mess up when your screwdriver interferes with the arc?

@ Fallout - Is there a practical use? Let's see... nope, just for fun

@ That Guy John - Yep, the sounds are coming from the arc. Glad you like it!

@ CoffeeGrunt - lol Maybe it's just the camera I used?

I don't quite understand what you mean with "if it can pick out drums, vocals etc." The music sounds just like a small speaker you'd usually have, it's not like one of those tesla coils that can only play 1 sound at a time. If you want, you can recommend a song, and I'll play it using my speaker and upload it for you

@ Isocadia - The density of the plasma is changed according to the music to create compression waves (which we hear as sound). A conventional speaker resists sudden changes in its position as the magnetic field varies with the input. A Plasma Speaker doesn't have this limitation, because it has no mass. The air is driven directly by expansion and contraction of the plasma.

@ Phaelax - It does distort a little, but my screwdriver conducts electricity, so not much changes. With the next video I could try and hold something insulting between it?

I'm really curious to see how one could insult plasma...
