I'm going to be moving out soon into the real world, and unfortunately I won't be able to lug any of my machines with me as they're all rackmount workstations. DBPro stuff will be done on my girlfriend's laptop haha, but there is the small matter of gaming.

Sooo, I'm thinking of getting a 2nd hand PS3 from somewhere and had a few questions:
1. What's the reliability like? I've fixed quite a few friend's 360s that died from overheating and had to reflow the solder on some of them - quite a large design flaw.
2. Does the latest firmware update still supporting Folding@Home?
3. How noisy are the fans? That said, my workstations all sound like jet engines, so anything will be an improvement!
4. Is there any point transferring games to the HDD if I upgrade it to a 5,400 RPM 320GB?
5. Has anyone tried hooking it up to a NAS drive with audio data?

Well I can answer 1 and 3 from personal experience. I know only one person who's PS3 has broken, however he often left it on for 24 hour periods. I've had mine since the day of its UK release back in 2006, I'm not too sure about the later models but the origionals from what I've heard were/are very reliable. As for point 3 they start out quiet but can become quite noisey after a few hours of play, however that could just be age in terms of mine.

The older versions suffered from yellow light of death, which to what i know was unfixable. The newer ones have a reasonable design and ive heard good things about them. If your after a second hand one but you still uneasy go the likes of game and gamestation and get there extended warrenty for £30ish to cover 3 years *if you buy it from there*

Ill be getting a ps3 soon aswell for the new monster hunter realese and a few other games that ive wanted to play for a long time now.

I was thinking of buying a 40GB + Portal 2 bundle from Game, comes with a 1 year warranty by default which is pretty good - and an extra 30 quid for an extended warranty would be a good move also.

from my experience:

1. I have never ever had any problems with mine which I've had for about 3-4 years now. They are extremely reliable: both slim versions and original as far as I know as my dad has a slim whereas I have an original. Both work exactly the same with no differences and no problems at all.

Mine does and the sony website says that it does too

'If you have PS3 system version 1.6 '

Quote: "3. How noisy are the fans? That said, my workstations all sound like jet engines, so anything will be an improvement!"

Mine doesn't get too loud tbh, although it is slightly louder than a few years ago and can play with my tv on sound 2 and hear everything crystal clear over the fan. Not loud at all in my books: my desktop is just about the same sound level

I have no idea what this means.

I need to get geekier so I can understand this board.

@Bootlicker

Thanks for the feedback, looks like the PS3 is a winner The 5,400 RPM refers to how fast the disk drive spins: the higher the RPM, the quicker it is to read and write data - ie. loading times are faster. And a NAS drive is sort of like an external hard drive, but connected to a network so lots of computers have access to it.

1. My cousin's 60GB died (YLOD? Can't remember?) but they fixed it. I've had my 40GB for 2-3 years and I had no problems with it.
2. No idea. Never used it and I can't check ATM.
3. Can get a bit noisy for a while if there's no proper ventilation . Otherwise it's rather quiet.
4. You can't transfer games to HDD, only install some of the files for faster loading (some games require this to run). Unless you're talking about CFW, but I doubt you'll get any info about it here...
5. Never tried, but my cousin runs PS3 Media Server on one of his computers and streams videos from it...?

Make games, not war.

I was referring to installing select game files as opposed to whole binaries. On the subject of firmware, do Sony have any plans to reintroduce OtherOS any time soon? If not then I may have to dump some CFW on it which, from what I've seen, looks a damn sight easier than when I did it on PSP - but that discussion is best left untouched...

The PS3 is impressively quiet. I have recently bought an XBox360 (The Black Shiny New One!) and I'm glad I had the option to install the disc data to the console because the optical drive on that thing is loud as hell! It was a real distraction while playing.

My PS3 died recently (YLOD, it will get fixed... by me!) it lasted 4 years, which is longer than my hamster did! I moved into a house with cats three months ago so I suspect sabotage by hair!

Funny thing is I have a SEGA MasterSystem in my Dad's loft which still works as well as the day he bought it a good 20 odd years ago. Nowadays a couple of years is a good life expectancy.

1. Very reliable. 4 years later, never had to replace mine.

2. I'm sorry?

3. Fans are moderately noisy. To power a piece of powerful hardware, you need to have rather powerful fans.

4. I'm nearly sure (don't take my entire word for it) that it has a tool to do such a thing, not sure though.

5. No idea.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

I agree with what's said above. Mine hasn't had any problems. Reliability is good.

The only bad thing about the PS3 is you have to update it all the time. Sign in, download 700MB. Come back tomorrow, download the whole internet. Ok, I am massively exaggerating, but you frequently find yourself buggering off to do something else after turning it on and finding yet another update is required to continue.

All 9 my friends have a PS3 and only one of them overheated and that was the old 80GB model. Another friend has the first 60GB model and it's still working. I have a slim and gamed for hours and even fell asleep gaming once and the ps3 was still there waiting for me to unpasue the game.

The name isn't "Folding@home" anymore as it's part of the "Life with Playstation" Program on the network menu. So, in a sense, yes it still does.

The Slims are very slient. As for the older model, if you had one for many years the fan will get noiser but it's nothing too serious.

There is a "Backup Utility" & "Data Transfer Utility" on the PS3 System settings. You could use the "Data Transfer Utility" to transfer the data onto another HDD via a USB cable (or some other form). Then simply install the new HDD and transfer the data back. I have not tried this yet so I would not know if would work or not although im almost certain that it will work.

If it's anything like what I think it could be, The PS3 does suport media file sharing. If you have other PS3 or computers with the correct media sharing settings setup. You could stream music, videos, pictures and perhaps even files from other PS3 or PCs onto your PS3. Or I could be done backwards. If the HDD is connected to the network, it should pop up on the PS3 but you will need to go through some specfic steps in order to do this.

Im 90% sure they won't since they removed it because of many hacks on the ps3. Sony is very strict when it comes to this.

I Hope that answers most or all of your questions. If you have any more, let the forums Know!

Good Luck...

anyway, i cant imagine giving up all of my computers which i put so much work into.

I know man, they are so underrated! The reason I'm having to get rid of it all is because I'm going traveling for half a year, so I need to raise some monies

I have this one industrial case from years back, had some P2 slot system in it, no idea what the form factor was but none of the standoff's lined up with anything I've ever seen! Tried drilling some new ones to fit an ATX mobo... drill wouldn't go through (these are industrial-grade titanium drill bits too :/ ). In the end I lay a sheet of bubblewrap down to stop shorting, and just fitted the only screw I could find where the standoff matched the hole on the board aha. That thing's had three people jumping on it and not a scratch - I swear it could survive the apocalypse.

Also have a nice 4U gaming / workstation with dual 8800 Ultras, thing was a MACHINE

One of the 8800s is up on eBay, but I can't actually find any services that let me post to Russia

On the PS3 topic, just realized that the whole reason OtherOS was removed in the first place was down to George Hotz exploit using Linux on OtherOS - real clever... what the hell did he think Sony would do when they found out how he'd compromised the system?
