I have to agree Indicium. MW1 and WaW still haven't been touched by the new titles.

Yeah, I loved WaW, Nobody got how the tactics needed to be changed in MP as you were mostly using rifles and short range SMGs

I loved the campaign, the Russian one was surprisingly powerful - especially the downfall of Berlin sections.

I wish they would get rid of review scores altogether. A review is just the reviewers opinion, nothing more, nothing less. Everyone should play a game and make their own mind up about it. Sites like metacritic mean that people don't even read the review, and that is the most important part not the score at the end!

I don't know how many times I've seen people on the internet post if a game gets less than 8 on metacritic they simply won't play it. How ridiculous that you play games based on the opinion of other people.

I got Duke yesterday and I've had a blast playing it so far. All the people saying that 12(?) years of development meant it should be the best game ever are stupid. YES STUPID. It's a game than has been through development hell and it's amazing that it ever got released at all.

I don't understand how Quik can say the combat looks awful. You have a gun, you point it at the enemies and shoot them. Or you get close and hit them. It's just like every other FPS game in that respect. It doesn't have ironsights, but so what... It hasn't affected my enjoyment at all. To me it's an enjoyable and fun game, and that's all I need to know to play it. I play games for fun, not because someone else played it gave it a 'high' score and told me I would have fun playing it.

Here is a list of games that according to reviews and thousands of people on the internet I should love, but I don't:

Most Zelda games
Red Dead Redemption
Dead Space
WoW
Amnesia
Oblivion
Fallout 3/New Vegas
Castlevania
Crackdown
Condemned

All of those are high reviewing games, get praised all the time... and I don't like any of them... My opinion is not wrong just because all these other people do like the games. It just means we have different tastes.

So anyone not playing Duke because of the poor reviews is potentially missing out on having fun because someone else said it was bad. That's pretty sad

I don't hate them... I just don't like them and didn't really enjoy playing them. I played Oblivion for many hours but it never grabbed me, I didn't finish it and it didn't bother me. I much preferred earlier games from the series but Oblivion is pretty meh. Although at the time I thought the graphics were good.

I loved Fallout 1 & 2. I have played both those games multiple times. I finished Fallout 3 but I can't truly say I enjoyed it. It was ok, but I don't think it deserves the high praise bestowed upon it. New Vegas I only played for about 5 hours before I thought it's just Fallout 3.5 and I stopped playing it.

It seems like people who played the earlier Oblivion and Fallout games seem to have that opinion. maybe I should try 'em...

The real thing I'm surprised about on that list is crackdown and amnesia!

IMO they should have just developed Duke Nukem forever... forever... It would just be that thing that people get really excited about once in a while, then forget about as it's "in development". It'd be much more romantic that way xD

I am saying that the combat lacks a lot: The weapons lack well... impact really, It just doesnt seem like it feels like its a alien pulse rifle youre using, or a rocket launcher. They seem way to nice. The enemy respones are dull and stupid, badly animated. Its like playing a FPSC game, with great graphics.

Like i said i havent played it, so my opinion definitly doesnt count as much as anyone who has, iam just saying what i think. I also thin kthat 2-3 enemies at a time seems a bit dull too.

It looks like it wants to be a arcade game, which is awesome really it is. But the rest of the game looks like a arcady adventure game, not a shooter...

I JUST DONT KNOW HOW TO EXPRESS MYSELF CORRECTLY >_>

and btw: i have nothing against games without ironsights!
I play CS source for example with no problem, and HL2 too ^^

and for the record, I am a man.

I know you didn't mention Ironsights but I have seen that thrown around as a big problem. I just wasn't understanding how you could say it looked bad...

heh, yeah^^ well, the thing that actually makes the game looks interesting is the gimick thing: the introduction was strong, and i really liked it: and the fact that you could use such a vast amount of items and the ego system seemed amazing too

and for the record, I am a man.

MY friend was messaging me as he play it, it sounded like a blast, again the complaint being the 2 weapon limit.

Not my cup of tea, outside of HL I just don't like shooty games.

I love plenty of first person games, elder scrolls, thief games, portal, etc.

But run and gun gives me a lot of anxiety, and I don't have fun. Rouge. That's my style.

Duke is the kind of game I love watching others play.

I DID really appreciate the level design in 3D. It blew me away at moments, and I played it 2 years ago.

Reading reviews at all is often a waste of time as far as games are concerned. There is masses of corruption in the industry, and I don't believe many gamers take reviews that seriously any more. After all, the reviewer is just one guy anyway, jaded by a big ego and endless free games at his disposal.

I happen to think most of the reviews are wrong. I've enjoyed stepping into Duke's shoes so far. I've never played a game where I am a world famous celebrity hardcore man slut, and that makes it 10x more original than most first person shooters that've come out in recent years.

My best friend returned this after two days. Me and him have pretty similar tastes in humour and games, and he aid it was trying too hard, yet failing to be funny.

By now we all know that certain PR's have been banned and will never represent Gearbox's game ever again. I myself have finally bought the game for a whooping $15 bucks and the rest came from my winnings at a casino. How ironic. Anyhow, I would like to address the following people here on Geek Culture about my locked thread. Mr. Destrugter 1. Don't kill the the person who brings you bad news from the guy who just delivers it. I am not a blogger with just some opinion thank you. I was in a club with respected mod developers cracking out some of the best user made levels for the original DOOM, Doom 2, and Duke Nukem 3D. And my exact words on my locked thread,(thank you Nickydude) were "I will "finalize" my opinion when I am finished playing the game. I just got done with Duke's titty city and "so far" the game....drum roll kicks ass! Yes, This thing has glitches and a a crappy version of Unreal's rendering engine. Aside from from a number of other problems. It's no Daikatana. Even though I think John Romero couldn't have done any worst if he worked on the DNF game levels. VanB thank you for pointing out the good ol days of the Duke. Jerico2day, I voted for you !

At 1:40am over here at the boot end of what used to be the great United States, I have finally finished DUKE NUKEM FOREVER. As I came to the end of this game and realized that the rumors of the ending weren't just rumors or made up spoilers, All I could say was,"Well hell! Thats it??? I did the ending thing, saw the credits, and watched the press conference. Ho well. Nobody's perfect. I really thought I'd have my game done powered by FPS Creator by now and say, Hey look! "This dude along with all these other game makers got there junk out before DNF. Well my crap was and has been in development sense 2003 using 3D game studio and then I switched to Dark Basic/FPSC in 2006. Was almost done with the first chapter containing 12 levels and then without warning I lost everything due to a hard drive crash on late 2008 on what was going to be a Christmas release to everyone. Then I gave it up for two years and said forget it. It's not worth it. But after surviving DNF, I thought I had seen it all. Now I understand. And now I know what I must do. Look out people I'm pulling my game out of mothball, getting it done and then....Prepare for the worst or the every least infamous game you have ever played ! Mark..my..words! I'm back.

I've been playing the Duke since his side scrolling days on my 386(if you want an epic ending boss fight, this was the one). When DN3D came out I tricked my mum into buying it for me(*evil grin). Then after 14 years I get this crap...

Though I will admit the multiplayer is nostalgic and fun.

So I just played the free demo of Duke Nukem Forever now that it is available to the general public on Steam. I have to say I was really impressed. I literally choked from laughing when I found out you could throw around a piece of turd. The humor and one liners are still as awesome as they always were in Duke Nukem 3D. The gameplay is the same exact same thing we've been playing in every FPS since DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D, so I don't know what more people want from it. The graphics, while not spectacular, are more than adequate. Same goes for the level design.

Anyway, that's just my impression from the demo. Could someone who's played the full game please tell me why it's getting bashed so severely? Because I thought it was actually pretty good.

Wow. Games like TF2, a beautifully balanced and surprisingly well characterised multiplayer funfest that can be obtained for free are out there, and you spend your time playing with crap...literally?

Why the hell not? Lots of people find "I hate book. Book is stupid" funny, but I just don't get it. Does that fact that I don't find it funny make it any less funny to those who do?

I tried Team Fortress 2, and didn't like it. I just don't like multiplayer games. I also don't like cartoonish visual styles. So a cartoonish multiplayer game just isn't for me. And I'm sorry, but no Team Fortress character (or any character from any other game, for that matter) will ever compare with Duke. There's just no other character in the history of games that is so unapologetically crude and hilarious.

It all comes down to taste. So pretty much: If you don't like Duke, his humor, and his kind of gameplay, you have no right to judge Duke Nukem Forever. Just the same as I have no right to judge Team Fortress 2, since I don't like the kind of game it is. Duke is and always will be for Duke fans, and that shouldn't be compromised to satisfy people with different tastes in entertainment.

I'm not saying Duke Nukem Forever is anything special. It's good, but not really a masterpiece. But then again, that's what Duke Nukem 3D was too: solid, if generic, shooter gameplay with one of the funniest and most unashamedly juvenile characters ever. That's it. If it tried to be more than that, it wouldn't be anywhere near as good. Duke isn't even my favorite game series ever, I'm mainly an RPG kind of guy. But I like Duke for what it is, and it annoys me that it's getting so much crap for staying true to what it is.

Anyway, sorry if I sound like I'm ranting.

I also want to make it clear that I'm only judging by the demo, which was made public on Steam over the weekend (I think), and not the full game. So maybe they are only showing the best parts of the game in the demo, I don't know.

Plucking a turd out of the toilet and hearing Duke's comments = Great!

Getting a Steam achievement for doing so= Even better!

Tossing said turd around the room leaving Mr. Hankey splats everywhere= Fantastic!

Realizing the decals are floating in the air half the time = Pretty lame...

Repeatedly beaming NPCs in the head with turds and getting zero reaction= Completely disappointing :/

So far I've found much of DNF to be like this. It has it's moments but even after all these years it seems unfinished... Sure you can turn off every light you see, stick your fingers in light sockets and make some popcorn in a microwave but the characters feel downright wooden most of the time. I do enjoy the minigames though. The pinball and air hockey are surprisingly fun.

I have to give it a go. My friend said he hated it, and we have similar tastes in humour. If only there were a way to play it without me wasting the tenner it's depreciated to here.

I don't think even ponies can improve genericity.

I never rate a game on the demo, it's like a cinematic trailer. Games like Red Faction:Armageddon had a demo that never actually appeared in the final game.

Okay, so I got the game and played up to the strip club level. The level design ranges from fairly good (infrequent), to average (most frequently), to absolute crap (slightly more frequent than fairly good). Overall, the gameplay is solid, though not particularly original. The two weapon limit prevents the gameplay from being as good as it could have been, but it remains somewhat fun regardless. It embodies what Duke Nukem is all about: mindless shooting fun and the most hilarious and badass video game character ever. Granted, it won't be my personal game of the year (Skyrim will dominate this year), but I don't think it deserves the crap it's getting either.

Quote: "I never rate a game on the demo, it's like a cinematic trailer. Games like Red Faction:Armageddon had a demo that never actually appeared in the final game."

Having played the demo as well as a fair amount of the full game, I can say that the demo does give an accurate picture of what the full game is like. So go right ahead and judge it based on the demo.

Quote: "Besides if I played a game, and the highlight was playing with PhysClutter in the scenery - I'd buy something else."

There's far more to it than that, trust me. Other than the shooting, there is a surprising amount of mini games, ranging from air hockey to taking a piss.

Bioshock 1 is awesome, but I haven't played Bioshock 2 yet. System Shock 1 and 2 were on another level entirely.
