Recently, when I click on something in the quick launch, instead of making a new item in the task bar, the quick launch icon turns into the active window (see the picture). Basically, if I click on the chrome icon, I should still have the quick launch chrome icon present and not have it turn into the window header. Any idea how to change that? It used to not do this, and I find it annoying.

Right click the taskbar and click Properties. On the "Taskbar Buttons" list box, choose "Always combine, hide labels". It was probably set to "Never combine".

nooo, that's worse! I specifically set it to never combine, I hate when it combines all my windows. What I want is my quick launch icon to still be there if that program is open, just like every previous version of windows.

Plus that doesn't fix the problem anyway.

Isn't that how it works? I always have to right click and then click on the program to launch a new window. Am I misunderstanding something or unaware of some feature you're using?

I was unaware that Windows 7 still had quick launch...? Not that I care, I keep mine set to "Always combine, hide labels".

Also, a shortcut to launch a new instance is to just middle-click the icon.

To each his own, but personally my favorite part of Windows 7 was the way the new status bar worked by default. Reduces the clutter significantly when multitasking! Took awhile to get used to but I hate using an XP or Vista computer now.

that helps!

Also, I doubt there's a way to fix this, but I hate how I can't right-click on the title in the task bar and get the usual popup menu(move, close, maximize). Now I have to hover over it, wait for the preview window to popup, then right-click on that. An extra delayed step, it's annoying. I use dual screens with my TV and quite often I have to move a window over back to my monitor after the TV is off. (yea I know the keyboard shortcut of alt-enter, but still...)

I really should print a manual and read through it. That was too obvious

Here's a few more:

Win + # - opens/launches the nth item on your taskbar (same as left click)
Win + Shift + # - launches a new instance of the nth item on your taskbar (same as middle click)
Win + Ctrl + Shift + # - launches a new instance of the nth item on your taskbar with admin privileges

Win + Left/Right - dock window on the left or right side of the screen
Win + Up - maximize window
Win + Down - restore/minimize window

Ctrl + Shift + Esc - opens the task manager

Win + PauseBreak - opens control panel > system

I remember when ALT + Tab used to impress people.
