For Father's Day, I'm gathering up some old computers to build something for my dad. He's been bugging me for awhile so he can start checking email. My brother handed me an old computer that wouldn't turn on. Simple issue of a bad PSU and swapped in my old Antec 430w. Booted up the PC and got the worst screen any nerd could ever see. Nope, not BSOD.... "Optimized for AOL" during POST.

Good news is, this mATX board is a 478 and so I can swapped out the P4, ram, and GPU from my old system(dead motherboard) and into this one. He'll have a nicer PC than my brother when I'm done.

That's very thoughtful! And, yes, a computer "optimized" for AOL is not a good thing!

My father is the hardest person to get anything for... He has a better computer than I do, all the power tools any man could possibly ask for, and doesn't have a lot of hobbies to take into account for gifts. I think I'll end up taking him to the casino tonight, though.

My Dad is equally hard to shop for because he basically gets everything he wants when he wants it. Just like Plystire my Dads computer is also better than mine. I got him something he's been wanting for a while but I've been trying to delay as much as possible. An external 3 1/2 drive so he can mess with all the old 3 1/2s that are all probably bad anyway.

sorry to be a downer but i dont have a father. But since its fathers day, i thought i would share his story, its kinda interesting.

i was raised by grandparents, aunt and uncle. But from what i have been told, my father was a big radio/ electronics geek. He left behind tons of broken /taken apart radios (its the same for me with computers, i have tons of hardware lying around lol) which is really cool, I often wondered if he would get into computers (like me) as well if he lived.

Unfourtunatley, he was corrupted by the lifestyle of a rich kid. He was like one of those kids who drove his dads expensive luxury sedan at 19 y.o. (grandpa was a wealthy war veteral, colonel (almost made it to general too) was a big shot in the soviet military intellegence agency.

so my father dropped out of the univercity and it went downhill from here. Got into a company of some crooked cops who took advantage of his car (which had government markings on it so other cops thinking he was government ignored him if he broke any driving regulations. When grandma decided enough was enough, she took the carkeys away. My dad then got drunk, stole the car, and drove it into a bridge support on a highway (he lived, got away with just a concussion). Then he started jumping from job to job. When he landed a job as a security guard at an alcohol warehouse, Became a very good drinking buddy of the warehouse workers. But he screwed up badly with the security guard part as he allowed $20,000 worth of booze to be stolen. The owner of the warehouse filed a lawsuit for $20,000 on him but my dad never showed up in court. Finally the owner decided to drop the charges when he learned that his father was a high ranking guy in the military

By that time i was told that he started using drugs, Heroin from what people told me. He met some random woman in the bar, who ended up being my mother before she ran off somewhere, i was like 2yo already and grandparents took me in as my father constantly had to work (early 90s was financially very hard on everyone)
eventually, he and his friend got caught shoplifting or something, caught my dad and beat him up really badly. a few days later, my granparents found him unconcios in his apartment, dragged him to the hospital and he died there a few days later.

I am not sad about this story, i was too little to remember him anyway, buti just think his story is sortof interesting so i decided to share it.

Sorry to hear about your father Pagan.

I'm a father of 2 and I have been away from programming for a year or two. I have been through a lot in that time and still am going through a lot.

My wife and 2 kids live with me. We are having it hard right now because I don't make much money, but hopefully that will change soon.

My father is 86 and his health is going down hill. God blessed him with good health for 85 years. I don't think he will live but 1 to 5 more years. He has been good to us and I will miss him.

I am programming again now and am looking forward to posting in the forums again and getting back into the thick of things.
