Anyone notice there have been more than a few of these lately?

I recently got a game called solar 2. Basically, you go around the universe sucking things up and becoming a bigger asteroid/planet/star/black hole.

It's fun, but I've lost interest in it fast. It doesn't seem like there's all that much to do.

Then there's an older one, Osmos, where you... float around sucking up things smaller than you! this one's much more gripping, because it has clearer missions and goals.

Then there's universe sandbox, which I'm happy to see doing well on steam. A year or two ago the guy was selling it for however much you wanted to pay for it (1 cent to infinity). I was happily surprised to see it on the front page of steam. I've messed around on this for hours.

Aaaand then there's "relativity", which is awesome (although I've only played the demo). This game (I'm pretty sure) uses solutions to relativistic physics in 2D. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MY-PSMGTws

I kinda like this trend - space/gravity based simulation-type games are really cool. Are there any of these that I'm missing out on?

[edit]
although... Relativity and Solar 2 aren't totally simulations, because the orbits of planets are constrained.

Looks cool, although these games tend to annoy me before too long - I got pretty annoyed with Osmos at least.

I was thinking this thread would be about the old school 2D gravity games, like Oids (my fave), the basic Thrust formula. Nobody likes to fly through space caves at high speed these days.

I've played Osmos but not the others. I like the style of game but it can get tedious.

Van, I don't suppose you remember Grav or Grav 2?

Yeah, I remember Grav, was a pretty decent game. There was another ST game like Grav but I remember it had water, and some awesome music - it let you play split screen 2 player mode - was more like a deathmatch game for 2 players. No idea what it was called but it was great.

Here's Oids - my favorite thing to do was to smash open a little prison, then set fire to the little men instead of rescuing them.

Oids looks pretty sweet. Not as sweet as Gravity Force 2, which is awesome.

Was Grav called Oids as well? I played that game to death on the Atari 1040 ST

ahah, I guess I covered most of the popular ones?

Yeah, I was talking about universal gravitation, not old-skool stuff xD

I like the sarcastic commentary in Solar 2

Nah, Oids was a good couple of years before Grav, made by FTL, same people behind Dungeon Master if memory serves. Grav was a PD game and had a more straightforward layout. Oids had some really intricate caves and little men to rescue (or set on fire).
