Now this may sound noob and lame to probably most of you... but as a person who has never played ANY computer game on even medium settings before... this is revolutionary to me.

A long time ago I bought a nvidia 8400gs so I could at least play a particular game at all (I originally had like a 64mb integrated chip that could barely play minesweeper it was so bad lol.) However, it's a low-end card and I've never been able to play anything with pretty colors, shiny objects and a decent FPS.

Until just a couple hours ago!

I had some brilliant idea to learn how to overclock--why I never decided to try in the past is beyond me--and it has done wonders. The only reason it came to mind is because magicka was running so poorly on my pc and I googled ways to fix this... overclocking being one of the answers I found.

Here's an example of how dramatically this has increased my gaming...

I originally could only play Left4Dead2 at literally the LOWEST of EVERYTHING... and when I'm talking 'everything' I mean 640x400 resolution type 'everything.' I'm now able to run the game at 1152x864 res with medium quality settings at a more stable speed than it was before I overclocked it and had it set to all low.

I've made sure to do it safely by increments of 20mhz and checking CPU temperature. From what I've read, I'm still plenty far below what would be considered max overclocked. I think it's plenty good enough the way it is now, so I won't be doing anymore overclocking, especially since I'm actually very terrible at this stuff and I don't trust myself enough to let this computer break lol.

Ahhh this was exciting lol.

Seriously,I advise you don't play with 8400gs,first hand experience. I had two, guess what,I burnt them. Horrible cooling and overclocking don't go together.

heh

seriously, you can get a GTS 450 dirt-ish-cheap these days. Well, I'd sort out the rest of the sys...

you know what, forget that, modify your computer to run on lava... that makes sense right?

Well done, you're no longer a virgin. Also may I point out that the Source engine (In this case, majority of the VALVE games, 2003 and later) are more dependent on the CPU than the GPU, so you're best off OC'ing your CPU a tad bit more if you want to grab some extra FPS. I used to have a AMD processor (can't remember the model) and got around 300-500FPS on Counter-Strike Source on high settings using a 9800GT, recently replaced that CPU with a AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition (And unlocked the four cores on it) and I get twice as much. Mind you I might be going out and buying a new heat-sink and thermal paste for the ruddy thing once my dire love for mechanical keyboards has died out (Trust me, will take a long time for that one to die out. Click clack click!)

Anyway, if you're looking to upgrade any time soon, feel free to try out a GTS 450 or if you can push it a bit; the AMD Radeon HD 6850 (I'd personally go for the 6850. ;D You get useless DirectX 11 features and they use less power and are better cooled than the 5850's.).

CPU overclocking is a breeze compared to GPU overclocking though, so yeah, crank that up

Working 7 hours a weak makes even cheap dirt expensive to buy... let alone dirt-cheap video cards.

It's either I play a few games for a few months until the video card is destroyed... or I don't play anything ever... Seems like I'm making the right decision.

I'm taking baby steps guys lol... This overclock is a great achievement for me haha.

yeah, but CPU overclocking is just changing a few settings in the BIOS, easy, worth it

I'm sure it is very easy. But I don't want to tamper with anything else for a little bit. Right now, it is perfect for me as I do not play any modern games. I just play games like Titan's quest and Magicka and Left4Dead2. All of which are running fantastic now =)
