It's been 7 years since I first signed up to these very forums with a burning question...

Quote: "
Hi, Im a new programmer and i want to know how to import my own models (in .x and .3ds format) and matrixes (made in matedit and world crate) can any1 point me in the right direction. It would help me alot. Thanks!
"

I just remembered the existence of the email account I used to create this account so I thought I'd log back in and look over some of my old posts from way back.

I was such an annoying forum poster! Poor spelling and grammar (and manners) and asking pretty dumb questions (I was a newbie, we all have to start somewhere, right? ). My use of "any1" makes me cringe!

However despite these rather rude and basic (No pun intended) beginnings I have come quite a long way in those 7 years. Finally at the age of 20 I am living the dream of my 13 year old self and have gotten my very first job working in the games industry! I'll be working with commercial games, professional tools and modern technology to do what originally started as a hobby, here, with DarkBASIC!

I was wondering if there are still any old timers from back then still around here and what has become of you all? Also let this be a notice to the newbies: I was in the same place as you seven years ago and now here I am, a professional games developer. Just don't expect it to be easy, work hard and persevere and you'll get there eventually!

Oh and also, don't judge me by my 13 - 14 year old self! I'm far more skilled and mature now =P

Welcome back, and congrats on your job. Well, I made it to the dizzy heights of TGC newsletter editor while you were gone

Ah yes, I had been reading some of the latest newsletters before logging back on and noticed a new signature on them. I definitely recognise that username, good to see a familiar username around!

I'm thinking of finally giving something back to the community in the form of some sort of code framework or tool that people can use. I will be doing some snooping around the various forums to see if anything springs to mind!

I second what BatVink said. Congratulations on getting a professional job making games.

I'm still around and managed to become a code master. (ignore that 'silver' bit, it was just a typo when writing Gold)

In the past 7 years I've also created this site for DB:

They all come back in the end...

7 years? Crikey. I'm exactly the same but have got married, moved house a few thousand miles. Twice. Erm... I got an app on the Apple store... and another rejected! And now use this forum pretty much exclusively to type messages like this. And wipe a nostalgic tear from my eye...

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

And my join date is just a fews days after Dazzag, that's nearly 9 years ago!

I still read these forums most days but very rarely post anymore as real life and job have got in the way of doing any dbpro stuff for many years, although I might, just might, get back into things this year.

I also read a lot of things here and I also haven't done in any projects for so long because of many things happened in life like job and my return to school, but now just job. some things had put my project aside like my computer broke down before i could implement a collision and completing my AI system for my car racing project years back before that was probably none that i could remember as a real project. lol.most things i used back then was mostly from codebase. so Im very thinkful for everything here that fed to my computer game programming hobby thing....man i miss the old text adventure days. i cut that off and lost most of my text adventure skills. I used to make simple ones myself back in middle to high school on qbasic that comes on my 98/xp cd.

btw welcome back Dom. It's great to have old members still logging back.

Especially when said by someone called Wolf!

Congratumalations Dom (I had to scroll to see your name ), I do not remember you as I did not exist on here yet, so it is not my fault!
I wonder how many of the next generation of game developers will have come from DB assisted roots/routes (wow accidental double meaning with a homophone! I must be poet or somothone)

Thanks for the congratulations! I've been a bit busy trying to get things sorted for moving to a new flat but I have been working on a little something. It's not DBPro (Still need to think of something to do for that) but I still think it's pretty cool =P

http://twitpic.com/5pa0gz

I've been working on a graphics engine written in C++ for a few months now and decided to make a game with it. I chose Battleships since I made a prototype of a Battleships game in XNA last year so it gives me a good starting point. I made the ship myself, so that's why it's not the best looking model ever! The engine is Direct3D 9 based and features basic model loading, height mapped terrain with dynamically applied textures, deferred lighting system, fake water refraction effect, geometry instancing, particle systems and a post-processing framework that allows effects such as blur, glow, motion blur and an underwater effect. The scene in the image above features a 131,072 poly terrain with four blended textures applied, 50 trees and 200 tufts of grass that are alpha masked, a sky dome, a water plane, a low poly battleship model and 8 particle systems, making up the fire and smoke; with 1000 particles in each so that's 8000 total particles or 16,000 polygons. All of that runs at 60FPS currently which I'm pleased about.

The video on this page show cases most of the engine features: http://dominicbodman.wordpress.com/2011/05/09/c-3d-game-engine/

Once I'm done with Battleships I'm thinking I will tidy up the source code and release it here for all to point and laugh at! =P

Not quite. I joined in 2000, but when the forums got updated to the new ones (Apollo I guess) the logins were mapped over but the joined dates weren't. The date is the day the new forums were created. This is the reason why quite a few of us have the same joined dates.

Heh, you are such a n00b not to know that!

Cheers

I look forward to that.
