I need to reformat my computer (Delete everything on it I wana start fresh again ) But my cd is broken I own

Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit...

I heard that you could press F10 when the computer starts up and it will reformat your hard drive..

Is this true cause some people have told me to press certain keys to fix an issue and like an idiot i listened and my computer crashed in the past.

So I wana make sure this is true before I do it and if not how can I reformat and delete everything on my computer?

vista? ouch

i heard there is a way in vista of burning a recovery disk, i am not sure it reformats (it might), but it supposebley reinstalls your OS like new. If the recovery disk part of your os isnt broken you should be able to do it. Try googling something like "how to burn vista recovery disk" or something.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but if memory serves, then vista doesn't.

If you bought your computer (not a custom built one) usually there's a recovery partition on the HD.

Then you'll still have the OS installation disk?

Maybe it's worth contacting Microsoft for a replacement, I don't know.

I'm confused. Are you asking how to reformat or asking how to get a new Windows CD? If you don't have the CD then whats the point in formatting?

You could always download Gparted if you don't have an old boot floppy laying around.

You can't format the disk that's in use by the OS you're currently running, silly!

Just burn a copy of Gparted to CD and boot from it and you can format and partition anything you want. But none of this will help if you don't have a windows CD to reinstall your OS. Looks like we may possibly have a new linux user

As already stated, formatting is not your problem. The OS CD takes care of that for you. Do you have the registration code for the CD? Did you apply the sticker to the side of the system (OEM) or save the tri-fold booklet that the CD (Retail) came in? If you have a valid code, just have a friend make a copy of their CD. It's not illegal to get a copy of the CD.

Not all codes will work for every CD. Just contact Microsoft and have the CD replaced like Indicium said then reformat.

Why exactly do you think you need to reformat?

You could borrow a friend's CD or find some kind of copy. You do still have your original cd key don't ya? If not, before you format you can pull your existing key from the registry.
