App Developer Group - Cutting Edge Games from Independent Developers

The App Developer Group - created by Baxslash in the DBP Forum - is going from strength to strength. You can now find all the Published and Upcoming games on one comprehensive site, with links to the full games on AppUp.

The site primarily exists to serve game players who want to find what they want and like. For the users of TGC Products, this is an opportunity for anyone developing for AppUp to showcase their games. We will in due course lay out the guidelines for signing up and getting your games out to your public. For now, take a look at the site, and get involved in the ADG Forum thread where there is plenty of help for anyone wanting to get published.

Yes, there's a developer login address we'll send you once your accounts are set up and then editing your game details is relatively easy, you just click the "Edit Item" link at the top right of your game and you're away.

Making a new game page is only slightly different but we'll try to post a simple reference guide for you. We will moderate any changes anyway so we'll let you know if something isn't quite right before your changes are published.

Nice work Batvink!

Thanks for the feedback so far, hopefully this is the start of something many developers here will take advantage of in the coming months, especially with AppGameKit on the way.

Hey guys, hats off to BatVink! The ADG website can now be found by a google search because of him.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=site%3Aadg.devink.co.uk

Our game pages can also be found by Google:
Radar Invaders - Google search
You'll have to scroll down a little bit but it is on the first page of results

Edit- It doesn't want to be a link, you'll have to copy/paste instead, sorry.

EDIT: Happens in Firefox and IE too

Jeku, thanks for raising this one. It is a known issue with this module when you use the fade option, which is why I changed it yesterday to a scroll transition. It looks like it's a bigger issue than I realised.

Looks like some of the game titles are completely hidden on that module, too. Nice to know you're on top of it, BatVink

@MrValentine: I think the images posted have been shrunk for convinience. I have concluded that the website doesn't use flash (apart from maybe 1 small thing and it's not the menu slideshow) because it works perfectly on my ipad. The website isn't that large in width because it has to work well on netbooks which generally have a resolution of 1024x600. So the need for scrolling side ways has been eliminated.

I hope you eventually decide to join the group.

Oh right, sorry my misinterpretation. I see what you mean now, the zoom could effect the slideshow and cause the issues. I thought you meant that the pictures looked a bit zoomed out. Sorry, my bad and forget what I said about the screen res on netbooks.

I've actually held off buying box2d because it is integrated in AppGameKit isn't it?

What's the right click highlight thingy? I want to know so I can try it.

I see, you should make a program which uses every plugin, that would be a sight for sore eyes.

hahahaha that urban dictionary is hilarious,

Yeah a blending of all the products is what I had in mind, it wont exactly be a full start to finish game, but perhaps a full sequence showcasing in some crude yet entertaining fashion the plugins in all their glory ^^

I hope to get author-signup activated soon, as the last couple of days the site has started to pick up. We've implemented some nice backend tools, and this shows us that Colony Defender got 7 click-throughs to AppUp in the last 24 hours. It doesn't sound like much, but the site is 2 weeks old and it is starting to direct traffic as we intended.

Oh sweet, yeah was more thinking about your hosting platform... my platform has enterprise class statistics >.< and I found out that they update on the fly

http://www.smartertools.com/smarterstats/web-analytics-seo-software.aspx

see if you can implement this... they have a free edition, unless you like me have this preloaded on your host.

Just because you mentioned something about site stats earlier so it tickled my areas 'haha'

We are using Google Analytics to get stats for site useage. This gives us up to minute info on a wide range of data for the site such as where in the world most of our visitors come from. I'm not really very knowledgable about such things which is why we are so lucky to have Batvink on the team!

@MrValentine is on site probation at the moment (not for discussion) and I'm answering his emails before they are moderated and posted (in case anyone is wondering why I'm talking to myself... )

@baxslash thanks for the other bit

Umm personally I find GA a bit... lacking really as its based on certain data and not the whole RAW data process ^^ just thought I would add this.. I have some experience in this field...

hope you can have some time to look at smarterstats and possibly implement it.

Hey, Can I join this AppUp Developers Group? I am going to be getting into some serious AppGameKit when it is released I do think.

I can contribute my game currently on Appup, Tilted Video Poker

It will soon be available from the following link: http://downloads.paradoxbang.com/tilted_video_poker.zip

@Mnemonix, you just did

Nice to meet another AppUp publisher! You will soon be able to apply for an account to add your published, nearly published and WIP's (as long as they are a certain distance along) to the site. Only people who have already published will be able to add WIP's for the time being (which you have).

EDIT: Just added your details to the main thread here: ADG

You can find all sorts of help and guides there regarding publishing to AppUp in the first post. If you have any questions just ask!

I noticed one of your reviewers said the game didn't work on Windows 7 (hate when people report bugs in a review... ), if you haven't resolved this it may be because you need to compile using the latest version of DBP which has a fix for a new problem in the latest service pack of Windows 7.

Thanks! I haven't recompiled yet for win 7. It works on my system and it was written in the GDK, although i'm not sure whether that is relevant or not. I need to get it re-upped but I am having trouble because of a sucky internet connection. Once it is up I can get a few people to test it and find out what the error is.

Thanks for setting this up. I heard about it from Mr. Batvink

No problem. I'll happily test it as my netbook runs W7, check my beta testing address in the first post.

The stats from Google Analytics are doing us quite well. I'm sure there are better, smarter things out there but we are all part-time game makers and the website is out part-time, part-time job!

We've introduced goals via events which are now a lot cleverer than they used to be. So now if you clicked through to AppUp from one of the games, we'd know which game, the pages you followed to get there, how long you spent on the site, which site you were referred from, if you used any key words to find us on a search engine and a whole load of other stats too.

how come my posts not getting posted? nobody approving them? [cries] [sniffs]

Eitherway, Pleae keep in mind if you ever need Joomla hosted elsewhere I am always more than happy to host it, I actually have Joomla as a one-click option, all you will have to do is port over your databases to my MySQL database the tables etc... and replug in your custom design... but yeah like I said I am more than happy to support it for hosting, I too am just a Designer person and Techy not Much of a Coder...

Funny enough I bumped into an old friend today who did C++ and others back for his degree but unfortunately hes moving abroad...

Cool functions for the Analytics make sure that GA script is on EVERY page otherwise you will have hugely innacutate tallys... its my biggest quarm... wher GA tells me I have 100 visitors in one day, I check my SmarterStats which reads RAW data from the server... and I occassionally have 3x that many unique visitors... so just airing my experience however I still use GA for quick overviews and simple stats for predefined Websites... its a nifty way to get data for one particular website in a flash if your like me hosting multiple websites on the same server... My SMarterStats gives me a overbview of everything.

I hope I can join in, I have a PhysX based game I plan to work on in the coming weeks. Just need to get my shop up and running asap and spend time while im there to read up more on PhysX... Should have something Demo'able by the end of August hopefully.

Wish me luck !

Yes of course I hope for it to be my first AppUpp project, I already have an idea in mind for it and its aimed at 5+ age group... already started piecing a story to go with it... will be a platformer in 3D, dont want to spill too many beans right now I am not concerned about that licence thing for those umm guys that approve your projects as I am new to AppUpp and respect Rules as far as anything else in life... I have a business, so not too concerned...

but yeah I got one issue I bought a new laptop for my sister today and set it up and found AppUpp pre-installed among other applications... (hate laptops lol... but I will buy myself a netbook with both an ION and without [2 in other words - so I will gladly perform testing for anyone on here whenever needed] and another Laptop to shoot with too.) but yeah I found it loading really slowly and do you have to sign in before it loads anything? its connected to the net of course but it just shows one frame displaying loading... just a bit of concern for me I will try installing and signing up to AppUpp on my own pc soon... just dont have the focus for it just this moment.

Thanks in Advance

Valentine

Just giving you a heads up, physX and netbooks may not go together hand in hand, you may have some serious performance issues. I think netbooks have a hard enough time handling 3D itself. What I suggest is before you get deep into development buy a netbook and run a few physX demos on it. If they run well, proceed with caution. I don't think I need to emphasise on the importance of optimization with this type of game. I hope it works out for you and I'm happy to beta test when you get something going. It might also be worthwile asking Baxslash for a few tips as he has successfully made 3D games run on netbooks quite well.

I most certainly will be in touch

I will only have PhysX effects on 1 object so not to worry but yeah I know what you mean I used to have a netbook up until it was stolen from me... think I will be posting about that in another thread shortly because of something someone said... anyway AppUpp is also on Laptops so its a wide audience but I do intend to allow it to be simple enough to run on a netbook... umm perhaps once I get the GDD over and done with and get a working demo done then I can properly start leaking information and getting feedback/support from everyone I hope to get it started soon but I cant seem to find time or feeling to read up on PhysX these days because of someone ^^ but I will persevere asap

AppUp is primarily for netbooks but can be downloaded and run on desktops / laptops running Windows XP, 7 and Vista (if you set up and run it in compatibility mode). EDIT: ...and Meego etc. etc.

PhysX can run fine on a netbook. I started a project a while ago that ran fine but it was very basic. I wasn't using Dark Physics though, rather a Beta of Matty Halewood's "Dark DynamiX" plugin which is based on an up to date version of PhysX and is still in development. The problem with DP is that you need to install the runtimes before you can run your game and it is unclear whether this will be acceptable on AppUp. I can give advice on how this might be achieved but I would suggest you send a message to Matty and ask to Beta test (he may still be happy to pass Beta versions out) as his version does not require a seperate installation of PhysX, just a couple of extra dll's in your application folder.

Hope that helps, but email me if you need more info. I don't want to go too far off topic on this thread.

Cheers!

That should be fine then.

Quote: "PhysX can run fine on a netbook. "

I don't know why but I automatically associate dark physics with physX and that's why I sounded the alarm. I tried using darkphysics on my netbook, didn't turn out too well. MrValentine, this is why it is always good to ask Baxslash about these things

Might as well give it a go if its got basic control mechanisms working... and yeah I was curious about additional installation components... [ie PhysX drivers]

The Website just got a makeover, we decided through research that White is in, and Grunge is out. The site is much clearer to view and read, we will be focusing on other changes shortly.

Let us know if you prefer it to the screenshots above.
