Hi,
I trying to choose myself a smart phone as my phone is well 7 years old and is beginning irritate me with its limitations such as a rubbish camera and the inability to store hardly any texts.

There seems to be so many smart phones around and so many different tariffs its really confusing me and making it hard to decide.

I have to come to the conclusion that I either want an iPhone 3gs / 4 or a Samsung Galaxy S / S2.

Can anyone tell me there experiences of these phones and/or recommend any deals?

I am looking for the best price and functionality really.

Thanks,
Alex

they always sell iPhone 3gs' dirt cheap, though bear in mind the camera on it pales in comparison to the 4. Which might not be ideal since even the iPhone4 isn't known due to it's camera quality

Your welcome to buy an android, but before you do, say this to yourself
I'm perfectly happy to buy a phone with lower quality rip-off of the iOS
Don't deny it, embrace it. If you can handle the shame, go and buy one

PS. Ooh I'm gonna get shouted at by people for saying that

I have a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant that has been absolutely great to me. It has a fantastic camera, it is very fast and stable with the latest updates, and the battery lasts a good long time for a smartphone. I can imagine the S2 has only improved on this. Plus it is very easy to enable USB debugging for development!

I have the iPhone 3G, the 3Gs will run a bit smoother but the 4 runs way better and has a sharper image. The camera was never an issue for me, I have an actual camera for taking pictures.

I've heard good things from the Galaxy S, but haven't used it personally.

Android will improve over time, it's not all that bad.

Just because somthings similar to somthing else does not mean its a copy. Furthermore android is not "cheap" works just as good as Ios if not better, and its hardware does not suck. Plus iphones do not have a sd card slot...

Iphone is following the age old apple traditions:
-charge a ton for somthing worth alot less
-do not allow upgrading with out buying a new device

What phones have upgrades anyway? I've updated my iphone's firmware several times but seriously what else would you update?

I think Crackberries might have been the first real smartphone, but I think Apple took it even further and brought the entire market to where it is today.

Hmmm yah i dont know what you mean by you cant upgrade without buying a new device Also, the reason the products are so expensive is because Apple is pioneering new technologies, for example, multi-touch screens werent new when the iPhone came out but the iPhone was one of the first smart phones to use it. Because of this, it costs a lot more to make an iPhone, or whatever product Apple makes, so you have to pay more yourself. i will agree though that iMacs are a bit overpriced...

In the end, i would go for an iPhone. Although i love Google and their products, i wouldnt buy any Android smart phone.

I would recommend Android. It's outselling iPhone now. It'll soon become the strongest market player, and looking at thinks like the Xperia Play, it's where all the innovation is. I find my Android phones have been solid and done everything I've wanted to do, plus if you want to get into mobile development, Android dev is excellent.

I feel ashamed at our forums for having so many applers. Android is wonderful, and very open while powerful. It provides so many more choices, and isn't attached to your wallet. Just in general Android is our spectrum to say... I come aross occasional problems, but the forgiving results outnumber the downfalls by a lot. Android has a lot more running room, and if you have the get together to make it work the way you want it too, not the way the company wants it too, then that's your choice.

Either way everyone gets in one rut or the other and defends it to the end with pointless remarks(like me), so choose wisely.

Sorry, had to fix the typo in the second post

Your welcome to buy an android, but before you do, say this to yourself
I'm perfectly happy to buy a phone with a much more in depth and higher quality OS then Apple's iOS
Don't deny it, embrace it. If you can handle the shame and simplicity of an iOS, go and buy one
If you are good with technology and don't like having every single thing spoon fed to you like a baby, buy an Android phone.

I will say HOWEVER if you are not good with computers, or not much of a techie, buy Apple products.

iOS

There just different, in terms of Android. Apple is like, here's a gift, you know all that you can do with it right as you get it. It's aimed at the average consumer and you will always how the same level of new things through out, nothing really in depth.

Android

If android is like a gift, it's a bit of a basic gift with things waiting to be filled by you, but not simplistic. You fill in the gaps with your personal touch and ultimate customization. Your gift will always be your own and new things for it are popping up for free everyday, you just have to know how to get them and not wait for them to be handed to you.

I have a Droid Incredible, and while I like the hardware, I'm not as impressed by the software overall. I have an iPod Touch 4 as well and generally find iOS to be a smoother and more consistent experience. Android is nice functionality wise, but fragmentation has obviously hurt it.

iOS does have a pretty annoying notification system, but iOS 5 looks like it'll fix that.

Personally though I'm planning on getting a Windows Phone 7 for my next upgrade.

Wait for the Samsung Galaxy S2 and get that. I have the Samsung Galaxy S and love it. Android is much better than iOS, I'm not sure why anyone who knows the first thing about computers would ever get iPhone over Android - Android can do everything iPhone can do and much more, especially if you get an Android phone that is comparable to iPhone hardware-wise (which Galaxy S is). Better quality games were the only thing iPhone had going for it, but even now the Android game market is growing rapidly and many iPhone games have been ported to Android, and some are even free (like Angry Birds).

I don't have a Galaxy S2 (I have a Huawei from Cricket). It's slow for games but everything else is great on it. When I first got it the thing that impressed me the most was that its constantly linked to a Gmail account. When I put in my contacts I did it via the internet on my computer and instantly the phone was updated. My old cell was annoyingly primitive so I may be the only person that's impressed by the gmail link.

Man why do you all hate Apple so much?? So that none of you feel so disappointed in me for liking Apple, i will say, though i have never used any Android device in my lifetime, i like it because Google made it. My three fav companies in order from most favorite are Apple, Google, and MS.

Another thing for you Apple haters, who pioneered the mouse your using right now and the gui technology that you are using now?

You cannot comprehend how angry this makes me... why do i even bother with humanity?

As for the topic, the battle between android and iPhone is a battle of preference. Its like the argument between Macs and Pc's they both do the same thing, but in different ways. There is no best,

If you are a techie you'd probably appreciate Android more then your average Joe. If you like the idea of being locked into the apple ecosystem(i don't mean this negatively, it works well for some) then maybe the iPhone is for you.

I suggest watching some videos of both operating systems and seeing which one you personally prefer. Id also say ignore the hosts as more often then not their biased. Both work as well as the other and serve the same purpose fine.

I will agree on this. When I saw someone's android phone get a text while they were doing other stuff, it just scrolled a very tiny message along the top status bar instead of a huge popup. I'm like, why can't Apple do that? Then when I go to hang up a phone call, I have to click 'close' on the dozen text messages I received during the call before I can click hang up.

Since my iPhone is jailbroken (which is legal), I don't find myself that locked down into anything. When the 5 comes out, my gf said she'll give me her 4 so we can facetime while I'm away.... Oh well, its a free iphone4!

Wow lots of replies.

I checked about an hour afterwards and know one had responded so i didn't expect much replies. So I went out and bought my phone the next day without reading any of your advice

I went out to the Orange store on Saturday and decided to buy a Samusung Galaxy S2 - It was £200 upfront and the £20 a month.

All I can say is that this phone is amazing!!! It can do pretty much anything you want. And it is cheaper and has better specs than an iPhone 4. I highly recommend it. It works fine with iTunes as well just copy your My Music iTunes folder across to and its fine.

Thanks for your advice although i didn't read it until now

I've used both iOS and Android quite a bit... And I find Android to be FARRRRR superior to iOS in just about every way. iOS has more of a simplicity to it, but with that simplicity comes it's limits.

~note
This is just my personal preference. I'm not bashing Apple in anyway, in fact, I have an ipod touch and absolutely love it. I just prefer android over iOS.

@Ocho Geek:

Android's been around since 2005. iOS came out in '07. So, if anything is a rip-off, well...looks like Apple is the culprit unless they can time travel.

I have an LG Optimus V on the Virgin Mobile USA network and it runs 2.2 FroYo. I love it. I can do so much with it.

Richest company in the world....it'll happen (happened? )

In all seriousness, I'm content with Android, but I just feel like it isn't a premium experience. The market is so full of low quality apps that it makes it hard to find the good stuff (it could be argued that the App Store has a similiar problem, but it seems muted [EDIT: by comparison]). The UIs differ from phone to phone so it is hard to judge it there, but many of the phones don't seem to handle UI rendering very smoothly (list scrolling appears laggy, for instance).

I have no doubt it will get better in time though. But I still totally dig the Metro UI, so I'm grabbing a Windows Phone

I must admit, when I was using my Samsung Spica and my girlfriend's Europa, it didn't feel premium. I think the hardware makes a massive difference on droid (like the difference between a uber slow PC with millions of things in the registry and 10 viruses, or a brand new uber machine). When I bought my HTC Desire Z, it was totally different. It's super smooth, awesome touch screen, pull out qwerty keyboard. Though the software is essentially the same, it came setup with lots of awesome widgets too, and nice HTC configuration software.

It's definitely a case of getting the right phone. I would not buy another Samsung phone, despite the raving about the hardware. I don't like their attitude towards firmware updates. HTC seem far more customer oriented and provide a much more polished product. You definitely gotta make the right call on Droid.

Get a Smarth Phone depending on your needs. What do you need to do with it? Game while on the move? Go for iPhone 4 (or Galaxy II). I for one need to stay in contact with things happening in the Social World (Twitter/FB), so I bought a HTC CHA CHA! Serves it purpose quite well.

So decide what do you want to do with your Smart Phone. Then find one to suit your needs.

Just because the company was bought in 2005 doesn't mean that the OS was in development in its current form.

iOS came first, followed by the Android OS as we know it today.
Denying that Apple created the smart phone as we know it now is a bit silly. And that is ignoring the fact Android was released more than a year after the iOS. Considering how much of the iOS framework was already a part of Mac OSX, arguing which OS started development first is trivial.

That doesn't mean Apple hasn't copied some of the features from Android in its latest iOS updates.

(If anyone thinks I'm a fanboy, I own an Android)

HTC Desire Z all the way. It's not cutting edge anymore, but it's a lovely phone. Lovely fold out qwerty, brilliant touch screen, really nice design and case, and some good OS features and widgets out of the box. Its the only unlocked phone I've bought (I normally get them on contract), and I only bought it for development purposes, but really glad I did.

Having experienced 1 HTC phone and 2 Samsung phones, I would go HTC all the way. I don't rate Samsung as a smart phone manufacturer. In my experience, they do not update firmware often and keep their devices current.

Hang on. When did this become a "which droid phone is best" thread?!
