I'm sure we're all familiar (at least those of us who actually make games) with that feeling of uninspiration and not really wanting to work on your game. For me, playing games that have similar gameplay, story, or setting as the game that I am trying to make helps alleviate this obstacle. Unfortunately, right now I don't know of any more games that are similar to the one I'm making that I haven't already played.

I am making a third person stealth/shooter hybrid (with more emphasis on the stealth) with a futuristic dystopian science fiction setting.

The last few games I played for inspiration were Splinter Cell and it's sequels, Metal Gear Solid and it's first sequel (I'd like to play the rest but I don't have a PS3), and Fallout 3 (with tons of mods). I was considering playing Deus Ex, but since there's a sequel coming out very soon I'd rather wait until I can play both games (I always wait until the price of a game goes down on Steam, $50 is just too much).

Can anyone suggest a game that has stealth or shooter gameplay in a science fiction setting? No consoles either, I only have a PC.

All right you primitive screwheads, listen up...

I'd suggest playing the original Deus Ex, since it's probably better than the new one will be.

And then you have Deus Ex: Invisible War after that, although I just got it recently on a Steam sale and haven't had the oppurtunity to play it and compare.

deus ex is my favourite game of all time. i enjoyed both of them, but i have to say that first one is far better than the second. although the second one is still much better than any other games that i own.

Yeah, Deus Ex looks cool. But like I said, I'd rather wait so I can play the new game immediately after I play the original.

Crusader is a great futuristic dystopian science fiction game.

Wikipedia has a list of dystopian music, TV shows, and games... which has one of my favorite role playing games Paranoia.

The penumbra games, not exactly sci fi but some really good stealth
same goes for Amnesia the dar descent, but that's the opposite of sci fi

how about messiah, by shiny software.,it's and old game, it's got a cool soundtrack by fear factory.

It is a very linear game and never lived up to its true potential, however it will be good for inspiration.

For science-fiction stealth/shooting games play Chronicles Of Riddick. It's totally awesome. One of few movie-licenced games done right (maybe even the best one, except for Blade Runner)...

Make games, not war.

Not sci-fi at all but stealthy: Prisoner of War. I really enjoyed it, it's quite underrated.

This, definitely. It's like Deus Ex with a unhealthy dose of 'what the hell did these guys smoke'. It's not anywhere near the original Deus Ex, but it still seems to beat DX:IW.

I don't know. I'm at that stage in the development of my game where the initial enthusiasm has passed and programming the game is just a chore. I need a good big game I can throw myself into to refresh that enthusiasm. Because right now I've got that feeling of overall boredom and disinterest about my game.

My favorite type of game is fantasy RPGs, so if I play a fantasy RPG I'll definitely feel inspired and enthusiastic again. But the problem is that I would feel inspired to make a fantasy RPG, rather than the game that I am currently working on. For that reason, I have been avoiding playing fantasy RPGs, because I need to focus on finishing the science fiction game before I go an start a fantasy one.

Strictly speaking, my game is at such an early stage of development that it could easily turn into any number of different games (such as a fantasy stealth game). All I have in the game right now is basic character movement (they're not even characters yet, they're still just cubes) and basic enemy AI (how they detect you, no combat AI yet). But even if I do switch to making a fantasy stealth game (so that I could get the proper inspiration from playing fantasy RPGs), it wouldn't change anything about what I'm specifically working on right now (human character 3D model and the beginnings of a level editor).

So I think the big decision I have to make is: stick with playing random stealth/science fiction games that I have varying degrees of interest in, or switch to playing fantasy RPGs that I know I will have complete %100 interest in. Either way, it won't change what I'm working on right now in my game (it's really more of a shell of a game right now). It's just a matter of inspiration at this point.

I don't know. I can't make up my mind. What do you, the good people of The Game Creators forum, think?

Anyway, here's some of my thoughts on the games you guys have suggested so far (I actually wrote this part of the post before I wrote the above part of the post, but whatever):

Quote: "Crusader is a great futuristic dystopian science fiction game."

The gameplay looks sort of fun, but the story seems to not be worthwhile. Story is equally as important as gameplay for me, and without a character like Duke Nukem (which is the only thing that makes the Duke Nukem games worth playing, since there have been plenty of shooter games with better gameplay) the Crusader games don't look very appealing to me.

That look really cool. I might give that a try.

Quote: "C-12 Final Resistance

I had never heard of C-12 Final Resistance, so I looked it up on Wikipedia and it said that it was Playstation only. That's a no-go for me. Metro 2033 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. look interesting. The Thief games are good, but I've already played them.

Quote: "The penumbra games, not exactly sci fi but some really good stealth
same goes for Amnesia the dar descent, but that's the opposite of sci fi"

Penumbra and Amnesia look awesome, but I don't think they would be very good inspirations for my current game. I'll play them some time in the future when I'm making a game that is more similar to them.

Quote: "XenoSaga Episode I"

Looked it up on Wikipedia. Playstation only. It's also anime-ish which isn't my style.

Quote: "Not sci-fi at all but stealthy: Prisoner of War. I really enjoyed it, it's quite underrated."

I watched some videos of it on Youtube, and it looks okay. The character animations are kind of cheesy, and the setting (WWII) is a bit over-used. But the gameplay looks okay.

Quote: "For science-fiction stealth/shooting games play Chronicles Of Riddick."

Again, I watched videos of it on Youtube, and it looks okay. It seems to have a Bioshock-ish feel to the gameplay.

Quote: "It's like Deus Ex with a unhealthy dose of 'what the hell did these guys smoke'."

Looks pretty good. Whoever is playing the game in the video on their site abuses ironsights a bit too much, but the diversity of gameplay elements makes it look like a really interesting game.

Skyrim is the source of my problems. I want to play it so bad, that I can't play any other game. If I try, I'll always have something in the back of my mind telling me: "This isn't what I really want to be playing. I want to play Skyrim!" But Skyrim isn't out yet, and I have to wait, and... AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! It's driving me crazy!

Anyway, about my inspiration dilema: I decided that the thing I'm working on right now in my game (the level editor) doesn't really have anything to do with inspiration. Making a level editor is, for me, painfully boring and I will never enjoy it, no matter how much inspiration I have. I just have to suck it up and get the damn thing done so I can get back to the things that I do enjoy about game programming.

As for the next game I'm going to play: Since inspiration isn't an issue for what I'm working on in my game right now, I can play what I really want to play. But since what I really want to play (Skyrim) isn't out yet, I have to settle for the next best thing: playing Oblivion for the billionth time. But that's okay, because Oblivion is one of my favorite games ever, and there's always more mods that I haven't played yet to keep the game fresh.
