Hi all I have been looking to get a Tablet and not to sure about the OS on them. I like some of the extra features that the new HP has but it uses the WebOS. Not sure about that. The other one I was looking at is the acer with the android 3.0 I am sure there are a lot more. Anybody have any thoughts on them.
Thanks
Dennis W

Well I don't like tablets because of there price. HOWEVER, this tablet is a very attractive deal and I'm surely getting one when it comes in stock. I think tablets are good if you don't have a laptop and are sitting around or away from home and want some quick internet access. However, the Apple's App Store is also very nice, but not $600 nice.

That's a real good price I saw in the paper that a lot of stores are still asking $449.00 So if they sell it at $99.00 just think of the prophet they had in there.

There is no prophet at 99 dollars. They're selling them that low because they can't sell them any higher. They are looking to not have a total loss on their hands.

I so wish I had an extra 100 bucks on me for one

Going to need an extra $200-250 now. It's sold out everywhere because there are a ton of people who ordered more than one of them and are selling them all on Ebay for 200%+ MSRP. I haven't been this pissed about something for a long time. Missed an opportunity to get a great deal only to see that deal exploited by thousands to turn a small profit. Hopefully I can snag one of them in HP's next (and last) shipment. I also hope that they limit 1 per customer, but that's just wishful thinking

Tablets are odd devices, whilst in theory a laptop/netbook beats them at everything, i find them pretty use full. I have a cheep 7" anroid tablet which gets used a lot. I wake up at 6am, check what lessons i have and what i need to take for the day. My bus ride then takes 2 hours, in which time i could read an ebook on it, play some angry birds, or just listen to music. Then at about 4pm ill catch the same 2 hour bus ride. Then when home at around 6pm i can simply check what homework i need to do on it without having to switch on my big triple monitored desktop setup just to check small stuff. By the time i have finished what i need to do, i usually have about an hour or so to relax. Maybe watch some youtube videos, all of which i can do on my tablet as flash works fine.

May I ask which one you have? I've seen some for about $100 but going by the reviews they aren't worth the money.

I have an Archos 70 8gb, their going for £155 on amazon uk at the moment. The thing can lag slightly at times, there are two possible fixes for this, installing another launcher(such as launcher pro) or installing a custom rom(some of which are way better then the original from what i gather). I have done none as it really isn't a major problem.

Just like to point out that Apple are slowly strangling every other tablet brand on the market. Samsung's already recalled a tonne of their Galaxy tabs here at least.

This presents the brilliant opportunity for dirt-cheap tablets, but with no manufacturer support after buying them. The existing customers obviously buggered, and Samsug legally bound to not continue its services.

And then people ask me why I don't like Apple.

A have a feeling smartphones and tablet computers will be merging sometime in the near future, since they already serve very similar purposes.

I don't see how they can merge. They're essentially the same device, except a smart phone can connect to a phone network and fit in your pocket (i.e. is useful! )

@heyyoufool1 The Touchpad is never coming back in stock. HP quit the PC business and went the IBM way. Therefore, since there's no more OS updates or manufacture support, they're dirt cheap.

They said they were going to have one last shipment though, from manufacturers and retailers that had some left over. That's what I'm hoping for.

Nah, they've recalled all shipments, and what's currently in stock is getting sold off the shelves at silly money.

Apple sued Samsung for allegedly infringing on their patents and now have stopped sales of their latest Galaxy Tab for further infringment. Patents are there to protect businesses and the products they design, so it's only natural their follow through. It's normal for businesses to protect their intellectual property, Apple isn't alone in this.

Microsoft sued Motorola over patents on their Android phones.

Generally I'm in support of the idea of people sharing innovations to the wealth of technology, but what's the point putting a massive investment into a product for somebody else to try and hurt your sales with your own intellectual property. But in the touch phone and tablet market, it appears everybody's suing each other for copying one and another. I suppose when you're gonna make a healthy profit over it, you can afford to be sued.

In all honestly a lot of Samsung's products very clearly mimic Apple's, at least from what I've seen.

I know this is an old thread, but I've recently got myself an Asus Eee Pad Transformer. I got it out of necessity, since the only bug reports I get for my apps are from tablets and I didn't have one. So I needed one for development.

Having got it, it's very nice and shiny. Good battery life. Very smooth. A good bit of kit, but still utterly pointless. Watching videos on it is good because the viewing angle is great and the screen is does the job, but it's a pain to hold. Who wants to hold the screen for an entire video? Touch screen is obviously what it has over laptops, but I honestly would prefer to use a mouse most of the time.

So, nice bit of kit and functional, but after the working day, it stays upstairs in the office and I sit in front of the tele with my old laptop on my lap. I dont have to hold that to see the screen, and I have a real keyboard. It is more convenient.

Tabs make NO sense!!!

Edit: Wrong thread revived. I meant to post this in the "tablet computers? (ipads?) why? " thread.

My wife got one for me a couple of days ago. In the UK no less (where we are not getting any new stock). Apparently it was with a company that she dealt with a lot and they had a few left. They were even getting new stock in the next week and said to phone if you want to order one as they do not advertise them on the Web (locks everyones website as soon as they do). Perhaps a lot of other places are the same so it's worth giving them a call.

Cheers
