I use macs for my work, and have been away from PC updates in technology, I need to get my old PCs up and running for a project, but am unsure what to buy.

I need a new hard disk to put a new OS XP install on, things have moved on a LOT, since I last bought and upgraded PCs, this is for a very old PC, 2.6 gig athlon, that's not dual core or quad core or whatever core they are up to nowadays. I don't really want to spend much money for this machine as its very old, so I am looking on eBay for some options, interestingly I see brand new hard disks 250 gig for xbox are priced at 1 pound courtesy of China, unbelievable, I then look at the PC category, I see external USB HD drives for a few pounds. New 750 gig external usb HD listed with the same pricing as second hand 10 - 100 gig internal regular hard disk variety. This is quite a disparancy in prices, what do you advice here, I want to get my old PCs running, but unsure of what to get these days to get these old computers up and running.

Athlon 2.6ghz you say? Well the problem is if your motherboard is really old,you will have to look for IDE/PATA hard drives. I would kinda stay away from external drives because older motherboard don't support booting system from USB and also, they are less reliable.

Tell us your specs of the computers.

An athlon 2.6 could potentially be used on a motherboard that has sata ports, you'll need to look. Sata connectors are small, ide connectors are probably what you remember and are large

IDE drives can still be found. I recommend buying new.

If you see these http://www.mypcmobile.com/images/satamobo.jpg on your motherboard. Then you can use SATA hard drives, if you see these http://pctechguide.com/images/tutorials/mboard/ides.jpg then you need an IDE drive.

What the drives look like http://www.laptopparts101.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/sata-ide-laptop-hard-drive.jpg Roughly that is, those drives are rather old and they tend to have the pins better contained now.

Hope that helps. As for size if you wnat cheap and are using XP then get a nice small 120GB drive. I know where I live you can get these for £8, super cheap
