Seen this and had to share with you all

A lovely bit of news from RPS this morning. If you don’t already own it, you can download Portal for nothing on Steam. It’s being made free to download until September 20. If you download it before then, you’ll own it forever.

This is great news for the people who've been living under rocks with tin foil hats, and not experienced how sweet this game is!

I too thought that Portal was just a simple puzzle game when I first saw it... I had no idea of it's warped story line. There's much more to it than "solving a puzzle"

I'm not sure what a pusselgame is... Sounds pus-filled and gross.
However, I was never a fan of puZZle games until Portal. There's far more to it than simple puzzle solving.

I had to sit and play this through to the end, it was very engrossing I had no idea the story was as good as this (I have heard Cake jokes for years). I think I spent three hours on it. It is now 1:46 in the morning.

If only Half Life had that much depth it would be a better game.

I'd never played portal before this, cos I am no FPS fan boy. However, I will try anything for free (cheers X Games!). I quite enjoyed it for a couple of hours. Good novel concept. I got bored quite quickly as I'm not a puzzle fan either, but you definitely can't knock it for a freebie!

I'm guessing their strategy is to encourage people to buy the next chapters? I noticed when I started it the other chapters seemed to be greyed out.

No, they're just locked because you haven't beaten them yet.

It's a pretty cool game, but when you've beaten it once there's not a lot to do (well I lie, there are challenges or something but they didn't interest me a whole lot), like any other puzzle games really. It's a shame they didn't include a mode where you play randomly generated levels, that'd be awesome.

What the deuce! So what are they playing at? Perhaps it's to enhance Steam popularity in the wake of this EA situation. Nothing is free without a reason!!

Portal 2

I think they are using this promotion to push interest and sales of Portal 2. I think at one time if you bought Portal 2 through XBox live you got the original Portal free, but don't take that as gospel.

I doubt Portal is generating a lot of sales now days on its own anyway. It is what three to four years old or something like that?

X Games- thanks for the heads up on this. Fun game... I usually loathe FPP platformer/puzzle stuff but the colision is rock solid and just about everything is on a grid. I agree the difficulty was just right and found it to be enjoyable and relaxing rather than frustrating.

This is the problem I had with both 1 & 2... I was trying out all these incredibly difficult ideas, when the actual solutions were far simpler and more elegant.

Alright, maybe it's not story like a RPG would have. I was probably talking about the setting and mood of the game. Valve seems to always do a good job with this, and Portal was no exception.

yeah, I haven't played a PC game for ages. I played Roller-coaster Tycoon 3 last year for about an hour, and that's all. Portal takes me back to when games were good, and not just FPS.
