Hey guys,

I've been shopping around for a new desktop, and I found this Acer Aspire that sounds good specification-wise, but I'm not sure about the brand. Does anyone have anything to say on Acer desktop computers? I know their laptops aren't the greatest, but this desktop sounds pretty sweet for the price!

At work I've been using an Acer Aspire for a couple of years now and it's a pretty decent computer. I haven't had any trouble with it at all. I fix computers for a living too but have never had to "fix" this one (on it now). I actually take it home so I can work on the program I'm making to replace the one we use at work (and to play games ).

The one I use:

It's hard to say without seeing the components. For instance, it has a 1TB Hard Drive. We don't know if it's a Seagate Barracuda, a Western Digital, or a Samsung Spin Point. The mother board will probably be branded Acer but could be anything from an Asus to a GigaByte. The memory might be a good Micron chip based board or JinkyJoo. Who knows? Just get as much info and as many reviews as you can.

Brian.

EDITED for spelling.

I personally wouldn't buy an acer. They always seem to have problems in my experience.

Best laptop I've owned is a Toshiba. I make all my desktops. From my experience AOpen and Asus make really high quality motherboards. I try to stay away from gigabyte, they like to go out after a year or two. MSI seems to be making a lot of headway in the hearts of pc enthusiests, but I have no experience with them. Intel mobos are usually very limited in features/options, but high quality. Those are the players I usually stick with.

I've never met an Acer that didn't break. My dad had an Acer, my friend had an Acer.

My uncle ran a PC shop that I obsessionally helped out in for cash. All he ever dealt with was Acers and Packard Bells.

By contrast, I've had my Dell for six years. It's showing its age, but can still run Crysis on medium/high due to the TLC its received over the years.

Okay, yeah, a few of the reviews say that it when the people got it, it didn't work the first time and had to do all sorts of stuff to it to get it to even boot properly the first time...

So not that one then.

What about HP? I like the looks of some of their slimlines, but with all of their recent news I'm not sure I want to buy a computer from them just now. I'll check out Gateway and Dell now.

I'd always say go for a custom build if you want a desktop, but If you're not comfortable enough attempting that, then it seems like a good buy for the slightly ludicrous(ly low) price

As for above, Be careful what people say for new PCs. A lot of people aren't computer literate enough to know when to start complaining.

depending on how much OEM software comes with the computer, I'd consider making a fresh OS install anyways, since a lot of pre-built computers can have ridiculous amounts of Company Software (I think dell is the worst from what I've heard)

I'd love to build my own, but I don't have the time for it anytime soon. And the whole reason I'm shopping for a new desktop is because my only computer (my laptop) is acting on the fritzy-side of its life...it is almost 3 years old so I'm not terribly surprised.

I think I found the tower I want. I already purchased the monitor today (a 20" LED backlit Acer with a resolution of 1600x900) for $99.99 (it was on sale), and the tower is an HP Pavilion (you'll have to copy>paste the link). Link:
The graphics card is still integrated, but it has a couple of PCI expansion slots, so as long as I make the sure the graphics card I want to install in it has the proper wattage I could do that, right?

I wish Best Buy had more technical information on the computer so that I could look that up.

EDIT: Argh, I always forget about the forums inability to parse the "%" character correctly. :\

You want PCIe slots for a graphics card, not PCI.

Its a good computer. The video card is average, but nowadays average desktop videocards are pretty darn good. I think I might get that computer for my parents.

It's got three PCI Express x1 slots and one PCI Express x16. I'm pretty sure PCI-Express=PCIe, yes?

Correct, I was just making sure, there would be nothing worse than for you to find you had no slot for a gfx card.

I totally agree! Man, if I had no slot for one, I'd be ticked, as that's almost the whole reason I'm getting a new computer.

I wouldn't buy an Acer again. I don't know what the desktops are like though.

My Acer Aspire laptop had a problem with its keyboard 2/3 months after purchase, I had to send it off for a few weeks to be repaired, after a little over a year (conveniently outside of the warranty), the power adapter stopped working, then it had over-heating problems and before I could get it sorted out, it died. A few friends who have had Acer laptops have had them die and a friend who is currently using an Acer Aspire Laptop is having a good user experience, it's a powerful beast for the price he got it for, but it is prone to collecting dust inside.

I liked my Acer Aspire, it was a nice laptop - it had a fantastic screen on it and was a powerful lil thing, it would have been great value for money...if it survived longer than a year.

But to be fair with any brand you're going to buy, there's a risk of your computer failing, so it's actually hard to judge which is best, but normally I hear people say: 'don't go for Acer or Dell' to be followed with folk who have had a good experience with both. I had a hard time trying to convince a co-worker at my old job as to why Dell weren't the best brand out there even after the supervisor's spiel about why so many Dells (like the one we were trying to sell) had so many problems with their batteries, but then she wasn't very computer savvy, though she was selling computers as part of her job. I guess to some the higher the spec for lower the price equals the better computer, a computer is economical right up until the point you have problems with it.

My experience for 'long-lasting' computers have been (and I suspect there will be people out there who have bad experiences with each):
Compaq
Toshiba
Packard Bell
Apple

And so far...I've had a good experience with Lenovo and would definitely recommend it, but haven't owned mine long enough to say it'll last. But it is durable, I have dropped it before out of my own idiocy.

best choice now is to build your own like from newegg or tigerdirect. maybe if you can find even a better deal than those than go ahead. whatever is better.
