Just saw this article on PCGamer, check out this vid of a tech demo that someone made.

The Article: This is what Portal 3 should be

Just think how complicated maps could get with portals that fold space and TIME! It's awesome.

I really hope that gets made into a full game. Is that demo available to download anywhere, or is it just the video?

Saw people in the comments stating that Valve had experimented with this idea (or something similar to it). Would like to see the reasons valve scrapped the idea, as I think this could add much to the way we think portals. I can think of many ways this could become a fine game, but I think if paired alongside portals then the game would lose its "complicated simplicity" and start asking too much of the player's short-term memory in order to solve hard puzzles.

Also, we can't overlook the fact that this Past Ordination Replicating Temporal All-in-one Laser brings about many new concepts... such as item duplication (An item coming from a "past" alternate timeline into this one), item disposal (the above, but then you move into the timeline that the object came from), as well as time traversal. I think these fundamental concepts of the device's use can bring about many great puzzles in a full game.

*Game Start
* Take screenshot
* Mess up
* Make portal
* Repeat

Its like portal but for absolute geniuses... my brain is melting from all the possibilites... it's clever how it can be used to duplicate objects through near-time travelling. Although I don't think I full understood

At the end it said it was made in Unity.

As cool as this is, I can see this being way, way too complicated. Portal has the perfect difficulty, so adding another element like time travel (that's what I'm calling it) could be too difficult. Though I guess if it was done right and somehow doesn't come out too difficult, it would be friggin awesome fun.

I notice that while it adds one dimension of difficulty, it removes another: You can no longer go back through a portal, because you're not so much travelling to a place as a 'moment'. So the only way forwards is... backwards, counter-intuitively. Although, if it were possible to interact with multiple, past versions of yourself, that would be cool. Doesn't really fit with the system we've seen here though.

I don't get it, it just saves a game state using a portal theme. The blocks going into the 'screenshot didn't make sense, as there is no portal for going back. The only thing unique about this is you can go to the past with different momentum and with future objects.

Now what would be interesting is if you could come back to the future, but it being changed from what you did in the past.(which would be easy, just fast forward the past to what would be, based on the time gap between the past portal and future portal. and you not existing in any way through the gap) there would need to be continuous time progressing for both portals to make it work. This would actually create a interesting program if no game. Which time travel is completely possible, if we could just put every atom to a past state.(based on if humans output depending 100% on input)

Not hate just thoughts.

@t10dimensional
It does make sense: the portal is there it just disappears when you travel through it.

You could still have your orange, and blue portals. One modified, and one unmodified. Then you could make boxes fall into the past. Although the numbers of objects might become infinite.

But that's not how it works. This isn't portal - the blocks aren't going through anything, they're appearing from a moment in the past.

Ya I get it now, the portal doesn't exist until you shoot a wall and vanishes when you travel. My bad, but I still don't see a unique puzzle game with this idea.

But get this... If you could place 2 past portals/shots and be able to place a portal to travel to ether, then that would be extremely cool. Think about it, put a portal down, wait 60 seconds and place another. Then you could travel to the first, then use the second portal and travel 60 seconds, minus time it takes to travel again, into the future. Remember that once you travel in a portal it can't be used again. You will be also be able to bring stuff to the future by hand and not gravity.

But the second portal won't exist yet in the past timeline

Wow. That really should be made into at least a small puzzle game.
Was amazing!

Green Gandalf was working on masking out 3D areas. Seems perfect for portals.

So..... what would happen if I took a screenshot of my screenshot portal showing me a screenshot of my screenshot portal, of a screenshot portal that's shooting out boxes?? We now have.... a paradoxical box generator!

EDIT:

Or... to bring quantum feasability (sp) into question... take a screenshot from below the falling boxes, then immediately place the portal UNDER the falling boxes... allowing them to collide with themselves!

No -- I don't know what the point of it would be, but I think not only the counteracting gravitational forces would be interesting but it would also be silly for a box to be... touching itself.
