Hey guy,

I'm looking for an original Xbox for use in a small Linux project that I had planned. If anyone has one knocking around that they wouldn't mind dusting off I'd offer somewhere in the ballpark of £5 - 10 for one and would pay for P&P on top of that.

Thanks.

Unfortunately copy+paste because of the % signs...

Ebay Has LOADS around your price range. I know I got rid of mine years ago so if people don't have one around here then ebay is your best bet.

EDIT: Page stretching was annoying me...

Obviously eBay was my first port of call, but I am not a big fan of eBay/PayPal at all and thus I would rather go through the TGC forums where people are half trustworthy.

I have never had an issue with eBay or paypal. Ever. What do you find untrustworthy about it all? I'd be far more inclined to trust someone on eBay which has safeguards in case something actually does go sour in the transaction.

I'd also be more comfortable buying something through a reputable company than from a randomer on a forum. You're probably going to need to send someone some money through paypal anyway and there would be no way to post a claim if they don't send you your product in the end.

I have had a couple of bad experiences with both eBay and PayPal and would rather I didn't have to go down the whole eBay route. So it's more just on principle than anything. At the end of the day it's a small amount of money lost if anything went askew.

Regardless it was only on the offchance someone had one. Guess I'll be going through eBay anyway.

I've had some bad experiences with ebay before, but now I just be careful who I buy from. Ebay/paypal themselves sorted out the problem I had in a few weeks. It's not ebay that is the problem, its the sellers that feel they can take advantage.

Anyway, give gumtree and preloved a try.

It's not so much the sellers (although I've had a couple of bad run-ins), it's the way that eBay and PayPal have dealt with the problems and also some of the pointless policies they have in place. But I shall not turn this thread into a rant.

Anywho, great shout on gumtree - just found an unused and boxed one for £14 listed. How does gumtree work exactly? By that, I mean is there any specific protocol, or do I just reply to the ad and arrange everything from there?

Just reply to the ad on the site or give them a call up, it's all done through the seller so you can arrange a pickup/delivery. I recommend picking it up though for obvious safety reasons (unless you're a minor then picking it up might not be the best thing).

I am greatly offended you think me a minor. Come on, how many minors get kicks out of creating Linux clusters on obsolete hardware? Unfortunately the guy would not post it, so I ended up getting one off eBay in the end. It's not worth spending £50+ on a rail ticket for a £14 item methinks.

You're right. We can use our parents money to make clusters using new hardware

By that statement, simply a passive observation, I have to assume you are either a minor or only recently reached not-a-minor status...

Probably more minors than adults if you think about it...

Either that, or you are unable to take things with a pinch of salt and recognize I was injecting a bit of light-hearted humour into my post.

I am doubtful as to whether your average minor (even from a selection of knowledgeable geeks) understands what setting up a cluster entails, which applications a cluster is and isn't suitable for, or even what a distribute processing system is in the first place. Personally I would say that young adults (or very old minors verging on adulthood) and middle-aged academics would be the two most common groups to participate in a distributed processing project. But hey, if you know any ten-year-old kids who spend their evenings hacking up a load of old junk to crunch some numbers prove me wrong!

Lazy people start here: I was joking at taking offence. I couldn't care less. End of topic.

Nothing to see here folks. Move along...

I suppose it all depends on how much learning you do. Kids pick things up faster than adults so if they started at an early enough age then anything is possible. There was a 14 year old kid I read about in the paper a few years back who could take an engine apart, clean it and put it all back together without any external help. He'd been interested in them for years so he just read up on them.
Pretty impressive if you ask me and I wish I had had the drive when I was younger to fully put my all into something, I'd be a bloody master by now.

Touche, I am absolutely hopeless when it comes to mechanics. Yet a friend of mine has been constantly knee-deep in oil since he was a kid - I don't think there's anything he can't do (to a car)!

Kind of wishing I'd read significantly more (reference manuals and the like) than I did :S
