So I was checking email today and ran across yet another bit of spam, but this one caught my eye because it claimed to be "okay" under the "CAN-SPAM Act of December, 2003".

Here's the wiki page on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN-SPAM_Act_of_2003

I found more legit articles on the subject but since the wikipage is well sourced, it made more sense to link that.

Why haven't I heard of this act until now? (Ignoring the fact that I was in highschool in '03 and didn't care about politics back then )

Does anyone know what reasons they had for passing this? Why on earth would this be good at all? And how is this contained to the US only? Are US companies allowed to shoot out spam emails internationally?

Without looking back on any articles or regulations, from what I remember there are guidlines to follow when sending spam including making sure you include your physical mailing address in the "spam" and having an obvious upfront system for people to opt out of recieveing any further emails.

I use to do a lot of online marketing, e-mail marketing was one avenue of markeing I used. If used properly and you are targeting the right audiences so called "spam" (which is no more illegal than getting "junk mail" in your snail mail) is actually pretty effective. Laws like this are being passed so legislation can catch up with the new digital world.

I guess there are people out there that take junk mail into serious consideration, but I've always shredded them (click on "Junk") without a second thought.

In my entire life, I have received less physical junk mail than I have received spam in 1 day in my old email address.
