Ok, so I needed a post to attach a new avatar pic to, so I thought I'd use the opportunity to discuss avatars. I've had my avatar for probably at least 4 or 5 years, and it occurred to me that people probably make first impressions about you using your avatar. Perhaps they even form lasting impressions, which can only be undone by lots of personal exchanges on the forums. So what does mine say about me? Serious? Aggressive? Wears barbed plate mail to bed? Stamps on puppies? (All true by the way)

It's probably similar to how you judge people based on appearance. Ya know, if they have buck teeth and curly hair, you think "annoying nerd", if they have a mohawk and piercings you think "wannabie rebel" etc. You can't help forming prejudgements, and only talking with the person can dispel them.

I reality, if I wanted to portray an image, it isn't of a barbed plate mail wearing puppy stamper on-er. I'd rather portray a more accurate image of myself, which is chilled out saviour of puppies. So to that end, I shall now trial my new manly and intimidating avatar ...

On a slightly related topic, in your sig has that guy got a strange grey mouth or is that a whistle?

It's a huge metallic beard. Nah, he's some sort of ice football referee, blowing on his whistle. Maybe I drew the mouth too small!

I like this avatar more Fallout. But maybe the puppy needs a mask like Batman's.

On the subject I don't know what my avatar says about me. Maybe that I would like to go to work wearing a bulletproof metallic armor, or that I am a Marvel freak? I 'm not sure...
When I created my profile I had 2 icons handy, Iron Man and my bunny. But I decided to use Iron Man...

Ok, if I had to make sweeping judgements based on your avatar and nothing else, I would say dude who likes robots, sci-fi and action, probably mid to late teens. And as far as game dev goes, I'd probably assume you were either an FPSC user, or into modelling/art work and not really into coding. If you'd gone with the bunny, it would've been totally different. Also I reckon different people would interpret an Iron Man avatar differently.

I'm looking forward to seeing if people who don't know me respond to my posts differently now I have super puppy as an avatar.

What you just described would be me 15 years before today. Except the coding part, that I always loved. Maybe it is time to change my avatar...

Yeah, I do get an impression of people due to their avatars.
Whenever you have something gruesome/disgusting or the latest call of duty/battlefield cover as avatar, I dont take you serious at first. Sorry

I change mine frequently though...but I try to have something artsy

I guess it's all we have to go by, visually at least, until someone posts enough to either confirm or change our impression. I tend to worry about people who use cute little animals, especially cats. Those who use ponies however leave little to wonder about. Yep, got that one figured out.

@Quik - What xplosys said! My little pony says it all! Based purely on your avatar and with no other knowledge, I would guess 11 years old, effeminate male, helps mum with baking, brushes sisters hair, has pink ribbons on the handlebars of his BMX.

Damn, I'm starting to think avatars really matter!

I'm kind of a hat person - I thought that was the only part of my personality I could convey through a single 50x50 image.

I thought I might replace all my stuff with placeholder things - 'insert location here', 'insert sig here' 'insert avatar here' etc. Thoughts?

Insert Opinion Here.

I recently changed my avatar because I designed a logo to use as a splash screen for my games and decided to make it the same everywhere I go.

Yeah, I do that too. Think of this as the new, slight effeminate and puppy loving, reincarnation of me. You can now bully me, steal my dinner money and insult my mum, without reprisal.

Your mother is a well respected member of her community!

Though I think this is an interesting topic, I swear people thought I was more hostile whilst my name was temporarily 'Musashi' and my avatar was Miyamoto Musashi. I guess it was the sword. Basically it is quite the opposite of me, I am very mellow 99% of the time, even when in very heated discussions, I hate it when people think I'm being hostile, but it's the internet and it's impossible to tell.

I chose the Samurai identity because I was very interested by Samurai culture...it's where 'Seppuku Arts' comes from, though it's quite a morbid name, most forums I call myself "Seppuku" and was told on one forum to change my name because 'Seppuku' was considered appropriate, it's only a ritual suicide through disemboweling yourself and having somebody of your choice decapitating your head, all to regain your honour. There's nothing inappropriate about that!

My current avatar is a photo from 2009 after the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany and my feet were practically dead, we were outside Lubeck airport and it started to rain, so naturally I took my shoes and socks off and it was THE greatest thing ever - you wouldn't believe how amazing the sensation was. And the pic is me doing a stupid pose whilst embracing the awesomeness of the rain...not sure what its suppose to be, some say it looks like I'm punching a wall, but the wall is actually several feet away. Oh and I'm wearing a kilt, which was bought from the festival.

I probably will need a new avatar eventually.

I always assumed your avatar was you doing some sort of spontaneous, "walking down the street, think I'll just touch this wall and stick my leg out for no reason" kind of shot. Like when you're merry and it seems like a good idea to run and leap over a park bench. Now I know it's to relieve your foot ache, I shall look at you in a different light .... the light of foot aching scum. Yes, Mr Bunion! You heard me.

I haven't, no, but I read Hagakure by Tsunetomo Yamamoto years ago, which is a very good read, I think it was in the Hagakure where there was an account of a ship carrying samurai being ambushed by pirates and...well, it didn't end well for the pirates. People often debate Pirates vs Ninjas, but Samurai win every time! Hagakure was full of some very interesting accounts of the Samurai traditions and what it means to be a good Samurai. Like cutting down the gods if they stand in your way, because you and your enemy pray to the same gods and if they side with them then they are your enemy.

However, E. Yoshikawa would be worth adding to my Christmas list, as I keep being bugged by family members to write one.

Lol, I don't think they would have let me on the plane if I was merry...then again it was Germany, land of beer, wurst and , so who knows?

As for Mr Bunion, yeah I definitely need to change my avatar.

Changing your avatar after using the same one for many years is akin to having a facelift. Many times, people won't recognize that it's you at first glance since the avatar has changed and the avatar is often what people associate with who you are and who is posting.

Sigs have the same effect sometimes. After Quik had his sig removed, I thought he disappeared! Even though I had been reading his posts

Yeah? Well, I'm given to understand that your mother is overweight (Big Bang Theory reference, nothing personal)

Before your new photo, I thought your pic was the logo of a metal band or something. Thought you were into rock.

Decided to change my avatar seeing as people seem to judge by them so much. I've changed it to the logo of Architects, a band who I literally worship xD Got a new sig while I was at it.
