I have to say... my parents had an old TI-994/A PC which I played a lot of the games on that during the beginning years of my life. I played games like Donkey Kong, frogger, TI-Invaders, stuff like that.

After that, we got a Gateway 2000 PC, which came with some booklets of games, some of my favorites being MYST & Riven, The Journeyman Project trilogy, Twinsen's Odyssey, a demo of Hellbender I used to play, DooM, Return Fire, the Neverhood, a Star Wars: Rebel Assault I & II, Star Wars: Tie Fighter... Sheesh, the list can go on! One game that was included was a copy of Hover! on the Windows 95 cd.

Then I got a SNES, which I started off with Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World, which I loved. Later on I got Pilotwings (which was epic), Donkey Kong Country, Super Star Wars, Starfox, TMNT 4: Turtles in Time, among a variety of other games on there (not to mention Super Mario RPG). After that, I got a PSX, which my parents got me Star Wars: Dark Forces and an Atari collection disc. I got a chance to play a lot of demos because I had the PS Official Magazine, and that opened me up to a lot of new games. One day my parents surprised me with a game out of the blue and got me Crash Bandicoot, which I still loved the series 'til this day. One day I got lucky and found Skullmonkeys in the store, so I bought it. I got Pitfall 3D, which was awesome to me, even before I knew about Bruce Campbell playing Pitfall Harry (even before I knew about Bruce Campbell or the Army of Darkness, period). I also had Mechwarrior 2 and Legend of Legaia, which was one of my favorite RPGs of all time.

After that I ended up getting a N64 for Christmas, and got Donkey Kong 64 bundled with that, along with Super Mario 64 and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Later I got Quake, Pilotwings 64, LoZ: Majora's Mask, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (which, IMHO I think they should have made a movie from that), Doom 64, Super Smash Brothers.

Also I ended up getting a Gameboy Color when I was younger, which I got Pokemon Blue, Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Super Return of the Jedi, Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon Gold... amongst A LOT of others.

That and a lot more... I loved pretty much anything I played growing up. Mind you, this is only before the turn of the millennium.

Some of the ones I remember most are the MYST series, the Neverhood games (Neverhood and Skullmonkeys), Twinsen's Odyssey & Twinsen's Adventure, and the Mario games.

What about you all? What did you all enjoy playing growing up?

I never owned a game console until I was 10 or so and my first was a N64 (This was in 2003, a little behind). However, I did play a lot of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Donkey Kong 64, Super Smash Bros, Castlevania 64, and the Mario Party series at my friends house. I also played Rollercoaster Tycoon, The Sims 2, and Red Alert 1 for the PC. Oh! I almost forgot about my Gameboy Color, a lot of fun playing Bugs Bunny in Crazy Castle 3!

For a PC we had an old Amiga 500 and it was an awesome computer and for that we had Monkey Island 1 & 2, Desert Strike, Gunship 2000, Lotus Racing 2, Pushover, Prince of Persia, Gobliiins and more classics. But my favourites for the Amiga were the Monkey Island games, Desert Strike and Pushover.

Then there was the Sega Megadrive/Genesis, we got Desert Strike for that too and all the Sonic the Hedgehog games, Columns and some others I forgot. Sonic was definitely my favourite and Desert Strike, I loved blowing stuff up with my Apache.

After the Megadrive it was a Playstation, with it my favourite games were Final Fantasys VII-IX, GTA 1,2 and London, Gran Turismo 1&2, Crash Bandicoot 2, Jade Cocoon and Resident Evil 1-3.

Then the Playstation 2 and GameCube. For PS2, obviously Final Fantasy X, we don't talk about X-2 and XII was okay, but not a fav. The Way of the Samurai 1 and 2 were very good games. I loved Kingdom Hearts, but never played the second one. For the GameCube, LoZ: Wind Waker was just awesome. During this period I loved the Splinter Cell games, 1 for PC, 2 for PS2 and 3 for GC. Hitman was the bee's knees and Shogun: Total War on my PC was god...Dawn of War too.

Then final XBox 360, Lost Odyssey, Fable II, Mass Effect 1&2, Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Final Fantasy XI: Online. Note there's no FFXIII on the list, that would be because I found it to be a bit of a disappointment. It's an okay game and kind of enjoyable to play, but nothing I can get excited about and I'm prolly not even going to play FFXIII-2 unless it's a massive improvement or I pick up a cheap copy.

Well: games have always been in my life: My parents used to play CS 1.6 when i was small and theyve been gamers since high school sooo:

my cousin had a console: so the ooooold mario games were my first ones..
then my other cousins also got a nintendo 64 and man, was it cool or what to watch them play zelda etc? it was AAWEsome...
couple years after that we got our own 64 and i played and played and played... i also got a gameboy about that time: Pokemon <333

then we also got an playstation, and i played mainly Legacy of Kain on that one, brilliant game...
after that was the introduciry to PC for me: CS being the first and after that WC3 tightly followed by RA2.. then it went downhill as in complet addiction etc etc...

but since my parents were gamers, i think its unavoidable really to get stuck: i knew what i wanted to become aswell "when i grew up"
when i was in 3rd grade: i wanted to be a graphics designer, and i have wanted that for 8 years now xD

Dunno if any of you guys ever played this, but Oddworld: Abe's odyssey. I used to be scared of the game when I was 4-5 but I had it on the Playstation. Was one of my fondest childhood gaming memories. That along with RA2, AoE2 and AoM.

Jeez I can't believe I forgot Aby's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus out of my list, they were both fantastic games. I rebought them on Steam too and re-completed them about 2 years ago...I'm probably due another playthrough.

I was disappointed to find Munch's Oddysee was being released on XBox, I bought it off of Steam not too long ago and to be honest, I don't think I was missing much.

Also, news has it there's going to be a Abe's Oddysee HD remake.

Breath of Fire 3... although i never got past around 12 hours due to life reasons... I enjoyed the game... it was nice... music was comfy and movement an animations were cute though sound effects could have been better... were a bit distant sounding like being played from the room next door...

i know it's not, but i still consider putting it up here since i was a big fan of it. sadly i don't have them anymore. sold some and junked some. They're very hard to find these days. In RPG Maker the best achievement that i ever did was a Final Fantasy style game being able to choose up to four from a list of 50 selectable characters. They all bump into each other in the story too. With each character had their own story. All their stories starts to come together eventually as you get far in the story. In the beginning you play only as the first one you chose. Each decision you decide will change your story. sadly i was halfway done and my computer broke that day. Mad me angry and sad.

what made it more worse was my ps1,ps2,xbox all broke that year. only due to laser failure. couldn't read no more.

DevilLiger - I've been wanting to make a "Free RPGMaker" of sorts.

I have enough technical know-how to understand the PE format on Windows machines and also how to inline code in the "compiler program" so you don't have to put arrays of opcodes as it were in the executable you're creating. I think I could even use Python scripting in it to allow a lot of flexibility.

UFO: Enemy Unknown. Amazing game. It's one of my biggest inspirations for all my games, and it's why my new droid engine has destructible walls etc. I intend to make a similar game with it after the zombie survivor.

There was so many games I played growing up from console games on the Atari and Nintendo and a lot of computer games (everything from Zork to Ultima 7). But I'd say my ultimate favorite two are the Mega Man series and the Blaster Master series.

If you don't know what Blaster Master is check out this video.

The first Blaster Master was on the NES (my favorite). The levels were amazingly massive and were designed in such a way that to reach certain places you had to have upgrades to your tank. Upgrades that came from defeating the big bosses... kinda like Mega Man. The upgrades were things like more powerful cannon, hover jets, propeller (for underwater) and wall climbing.

Cool! My question was did it make an EXE though, or did you need the program you made it in to run it?

Why would you need to generate an exe? You could just do what RPG Maker does and use a runtime exe along with a collection of data files (maps, scripts, etc).

Well, regardless you'd need to create the runtime EXE for each project you create with your game maker program, wouldn't you? But I guess all you'd need in that case is:

1. MS-DOS MZ EXE
2. PE Header
3. RVA Table which lists where your code, data, and import sections are (import section especially important in this for calling DLL function).
4. Code section, which contains a jump to your DLL Main function where it gets info from your data files and pretty much runs the game for you.
5. Data section, which contains DATA you'd need to call your DLL.
6. Import section, where it labels your DLLs name, number, etc. along with the function name of your DLL main function you'll be calling.

EDIT: I guess you could just pre-compile the exe to load up the data types and all your info from game files that are generated when you make your project. Sorry, I'm thinking too deeply into this, as I'm thinking from the standpoint of compiler design.

Nonetheless, your code would have to be VERY modular then. And VERY flexible.

No you wouldn't, you'd build the runtime EXE beforehand and it'd read all the data files that the game maker generates. No PE knowledge required.

I got into video game latter on in life, due to the fact that my mother firmly believes that they cause violent behavior. I got into the game craze at 15 when I bought a used N64 (about the time perfect Dark came out.)
Speaking of which, I have fondness for Perfect Dark, Golden eye, and Command and Conquer.
