Just heard in the news that Steve Jobs died today. Love him or hate him, he put out some great products as CEO of Apple and will surely be missed by me and many others.

I don't care about Apple or the devices he helped create. The man was a husband and a father, and even with all of his money, he could not win the battle against pancreatic cancer. That's what makes this so tragic for me - it really seemed like he had it beaten for a while.

I never cared to much for Apple, but he believed in his products, and his company, and I respect that. Sad news. Rest in peace.

May he rest in peace. I've always admired the sheer elegance of the products he sought to perfect, even if they weren't for everyone.

Yah, you cant deny that he was a great guy. And the new iPhone released yesterday didnt get good reviews, so the last thing the poor guy heard was that people weren't impressed with his newest product...

Even though I prefer PC to Mac, even though I prefer 'Droid to iOS, in fact, even despite the fact I couldn't find an aspect of Apple I dp like, I had massive respect for this guy.

Why? Not just because he was still running a corporation as CEO up until a month before his death, and making sure it reached its full potential. He was an excellent salesman at heart, that's what made Apple. He'd bring on his new product, showing a playing with it to the world.

Watching him present the demos, you could tell he genuinely believed in his products, and it made you believe in them too. I feel sorry for the next CEO that has to follow his act.

Wow, RIP Steve. He has made a great contribution to computing and he was what really pushed Apple forward, without him computers would not be the same. He will be a hard man to follow.

Though of course, the man had a family and people who loved him and of course that's the saddest thing of all, so I wish them the best.

I woke up this morning to this news and then I saw these horrible jokes like:

Quote: "All of the Apple employees are now Jobless.

Cure for cancer? I guess there wasn't an App for that."

And this is worst of all:

i never liked apple products but i legitimatley feel sad right now because Steve Jobs pushed technology forward and i am just very fond of all things technological and Steve Jobs is the kind of man who deserves respect. Sure he was a billionare among hundreds of others but he wasnt about making money (well maybe he was i dont know) I think he was more interested in pushing technology forward than making money and i just respect that kind of attitude. I actually can relate to Steve since he was a college dropout building computers in his garage. I do the same kind of thing, but unlike steve, i lack patence to actualy finish my projects, and i guess i am not as innovative as Steve was during his time. But i always wanted to make something that would leave a mark in the history of the world.

I never thought that i would express admiration for Steve Jobs like this. But unlike many other billionares Steve seems like a much less of a scumbag and actually worthy of of great respect.

That comic is perfect.

I don't think Apple can bounce back from this. Jobs was Apple, I don't think they'll be able to manage without him. If I recall correctly, he left the company once for a couple of years, and it nearly went completely bust, then he returned and basically rebuilt it again. The man was a genius.

Quote: "I cant say he really did anything AMAAZIIIIING in the electronic industry"

So I guess you don't think mass marketing the mouse to be particularly amazing? Or his work developing the whole concept of the desktop? Or, you know, the iPhone, of which over 100 million have been sold, according to Apple's aproximates? You may not consider that influential... But I'm pretty sure you're wrong.

This. The Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod all have made a big impact and influenced how we do technology. I think his ability to take risks and believe in them enough to succeed is definitely something to respect. Though many will refuse to recognise it, but you don't have to like Apple to be able to, as Apple-haters of this forum have.

After Steve and his buddy Mr Wozniak paid a visit to the Xerox Research Centre in the 70's they had the idea to use a GUI on a computer and developed a computer they pushed to the consumer market that not only had a GUI but also used a mouse. It was a risk, but it worked out to be very worthwhile. It was a decision that meant other people started doing it, even Microsoft. This is a pretty significant thing. Sure they didn't invent the GUI, but then the guy who invented the car didn't invent the engine (or the wheel).

Why are people saying things like "I hate apple but..." who cares if you don't like his products? He is an inspiration to millions and has been a major influence in electronics for decades.

Something I don't like about any of these remembrance threads is people saying "RIP" or "I give my condolences", you didn't know the guy and his family wont read this forum. I know you all mean well, but I feel there's something false and almost disrespectful about messages like that on internet forums.

Well he and his products did greatly influence everyone here even if we didnt own a mac product. I never owned an apple thing but that dosent mean that the impact that apple left in the worldwide computer industry didnt influence me or anyone else. Maybe i dont know much about Steve Jobs, But i still admire the guy for what he stands for i guess.

Also just a sidenote. Steve jobs is credited of inventing the GUI when i actually think Xerox had GUIs first. Also They Credit Jobs for inventing the computer mouse which i am also pretty sure he didnt invent. He did however take these ideas from the strictly professional market, then adapted and intergrated them into everyday consumer market. No matter what people argue You cant deny that Steves influence in the history of computing and electronics is undenaiable

I don't thing anyone credits him for it. In fact, most things I read go out of their way to not credit him for it. Xerox had invented both the gui and mouse. Xerox had absolutely no desire to go to market with these inventions. Xerox did not believe they would be useful.

I think it'll carry itself for a while. I think the real test will be when it would be about time for Apple to introduce the next "big thing". I think then we'll know if it still has innovation in it. But I think that the main guys Steve surrounded himself with since he took back over can carry the current products a couple more generations, not only because they are talented, but those products still have Steve in them and will for a couple years.

Dude, you're looking at it how it is now. iPods took off the way they did because at the time, it A. Was a damn good mp3 player and B. was cool. Plus the iTunes store, two years later, propelled that vehicle even further. The tablet PC market was a fairly unexplored territory until the iPad paved the way, and now you can't walk into the store without being hit with every Samsung / Sony / Android what have you. And Mac computers, say what you will about preference, were key in influencing how modern computers work altogether.

Anywho, I apparently have way too much time on my hands.

It's true a Sony Walkman is and always were better at sound quality than an iPod, but Sony never had a good marketing system, it has eternally been their weak point.

I have an X-1050, fantastic device. But the iPod...it's iconic. A combination of clever advertising, and Steve Jobs showing it to the world in his trademark way. He could pick up any Apple product, and go "Look at this, this is amazing, this is different, this is the future. Wait, is it? No, it's right here, right now."

He could make something that, other than style and ease-of-use, wasn't that special, and make it seem special. I reckon any product in Steve Jobs' hands would seem amazing if you gave him five minutes to demonstrate it.

iPods: what would they be without the itunes though? My friend didnt use it and all that appealed to me was the good looks on it: it was shoey expensive though and not at all worth the money - without the storey the ipod is pretty much exactly like any other mp3

Iam not at all saying the products are crap: iam just saying that theyre overrated /aka given way to much credit\and theyre extrmely overpriced with a rather worthless policy (as far as i've heard)

though iPads are exactly like iphones.. just bigger, and clumsy and without the ability to call. I'd rather have a netbook, since theyre a lot smaller, more comfy and have a keyboard..
and iam sure it was the iphones that paved the road to android etc phones, not the iPad<

Who else would you be giving condolences to?
From wiktionary:
Quote: "Condolences - Comfort, support, or sympathy offered to the family and friends of somebody who has died."

That's what I mean, you don't even know who you are addressing. I am not attacking you or anyone on this forum, this is a widespread common thing when famous people die.

It's fantastic that he has inspired people and understandable that everyone recognises that he is a great loss, but it just doesn't feel right to me to give any personal or emotional sentiments when I never knew him.
