I'm constantly having to tell myself to stop my projects at the wee hours of the night. For one, this lack of sleep can't be good.

Also, I keep promising my fiancee I'll go to bed early... And I fail.

It's almost as bad as when I was addicted to Minecrack. I'd stay up 'til 4-5 in the morning playing then have to go to work in two hours.

Well at least you are working now and not playing. It could be only better if you'd be working on the fields instead on a computer

I sometimes fall for the night too, but i quickly have to realize that not counting the very first night after a long sleepy time period, the night is practically useless. So it's better to sleep and be 100% ready tomorrow.

...unless you devour incredible amounts of coffee. Which i won't do ever. It's a delicious drink, not fuel.

I, too, tend to stay up all night widdling away at this or that, only to realize at dawn that I once again missed out on some much needed shut eye.

Since when?! I must have missed the memo!

I even have to take it a step further...
if I quit on my project and get to bed right away, it haunts me. Literally. I cannot fin any sleep at all as it roams through my head until the morninglight. I have to say that my productivity while lying down is asthonishing. Not only do I find the resolution to though problems, I do also have fantastic ideas (I most likely forget at dawn). I have to stop on my projects a full hour before going to bed to shut down the good old processor in my head. I usually take a walk, drink some tea, listen to relaxing music,IMchat with friends or read a few pages of a novel to finally get some sleep.

Wolf - Good idea... I oughta try it. Or maybe when she's going to bed, that's when I put it down and get some sleep... Although, she goes to bed at 7-8PM because her job requires her to be at work at 6AM... So I'd be getting up about 4-5AM. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yes, but not about the computer. Just kidding, but I always stay up to stupid times doing nothing in particular, just looking at facebook or something rubbish like that.

You guys need to get some discipline in your approach to coding. You'll be more productive if you get to bed at night and wake up early the next day. Also, to those who find themselves amazingly solving problems when you're lying in bed (happens to me too), it's because you're tired when you're at your computer. If you weren't tried while you were at your computer, you'd solve them there. Going to bed is the best thing I've ever done.

This is why nobody ever finishes anything, and why I never used to! If you have no discipline, it's just a hard burn, working late into the night for a few days/weeks, until your interest runs dry.

And Da_Rhyno mate, imo you really should be going to bed with your fiancee when she goes to bed. I always reserve time in the evenings for my mrs, and we both go to bed at the same time. Aside from the fringe benefits I think it's healthy to fall asleep and wake up together.

Ok, off my high horse and down to the pub!!

The latest i've ever worked was to about 4 in the morning, and that bad habit is now eliminated, i usually stop working around 9:00 to 10:00, at the most of 11:00. I do usually keep myself disciplined on my late-night computing, at night, while working, i run into a problem and get frustrated and end up deleting what work i have done, only to wake up the next morning, magically thinking of a way to fix it, then having to redo it again. I totally agree with what Wolf said when it comes to discipline, it's definitely necessary when wanting to program a good game. (or any application)

@Fallout:

The reason I stay up all night is because I'm solving problems at my computer, lol. One problem solved leads to another problem solved, and that process repeats until I realize that the sun came up. No matter how tired I am, my brain can't stop solving problems, and knowing my brain, it'll forget how to solve that problem if I go to sleep and "leave it for later".

Such a problematic brain.

@Plystire

I feel you pain! I have the same problem, and I find if I quit work and go to bed, my mind is switched on and keeps thinking about work. Now I make sure I have at least 1 hour of down time before I go to bed (that's the minimum). I generally stop before dinner (say 7pm latest) then maybe watch a movie or some TV to allow my brain to switch off.

I think coding definitely supercharges your brain though. You have so much information and so many plans swimming about in it, you have to work at getting it to switch off again.
